Commentary

That concludes our commentary of the Serie A fixture between Inter and Roma! We hope you’ve enjoyed it!
Inter finally play their rescheduled match against Bologna on Wednesday, ahead of an away trip to Udinese on Sunday. Roma visit Leicester City in the Europa Conference League semi-finals, before returning home to face Bologna on Sunday.
A dominant Inter ease past Roma at the Giuseppe Meazza, powering three goals past Patricio en-route to a 3-1 victory that sees them return to the top of the table. A positive start from Simone Inzaghi’s side saw them net twice in the opening 40 minutes through great goals from Dumfries and Brozovic, which put the Giallorossi firmly on the back foot. Mourinho’s side looked positive after the restart but again their momentum was halted abruptly when Martinez slotted a header past the goalkeeper thanks to Calhanoglu’s accurate corner less than 10 minutes after the restart. It’s a day to forget for Mourinho despite a lovely late goal from Mkhitaryan - which proved nothing more than a consolation and an end to Handanovic’s clean sheet. The Nerazzurri go back top of the league - at least temporarily - with the win while Roma stay fifth.
90' + 5' FULL-TIME: INTER 3-1 ROMA.
90' + 3' Karsdorp's early cross into the penalty area from deep on the wing fails to find the run of Vina as Skriniar comes across to deal with the danger.
90' + 1' The fourth official indicates four minutes will be added to the end of the 90 for stoppages.
89' Handanovic won't be pleased about seeing his clean sheet ruined but the three points are what's most important to Inter, who put the pressure back on Milan ahead of their match against Serie A's other capital-based club; Lazio.
H. Çalhanoğlu
Yellow Card
Internazionale
87' A poor tackle from Calhanoglu on Mkhitaryan sees the Turkey international shown a yellow card.
E. Shomurodov
Assist
Roma
85' Shomurodov gets an assist after just seven minutes on the pitch, pulling a pass back for Mkhitaryan to strike.
H. Mkhitaryan
Goal
Roma
85' ROMA REDUCE THE DEFICIT! 3-1! Shomurodov drives towards the byline before cutting a pass back to the penalty spot for Karsdorp. The wing-back dummies the ball allowing it to run for Mkhitaryan, who smashes his shot high into the roof of the goal!
84' Inter have won their last three league games, as many wins as they recorded in their previous 10 games played in 2022 - the Nerazzurri, are with Fiorentina and Udinese (before the postponed game against Salernitana), one of the three teams to have won all of their games played in April.
A. Sánchez
L. Martínez
Internazionale
82' Martinez gets recalled to the bench in the late stages of the game with the early rest perhaps a reward for his goal. Sanchez comes on in his place.
E. Bove
Sérgio Oliveira
Roma
80' Oliveira's yellow card is his last involvement of the match, with Bove replacing the Portugal international.
Sérgio Oliveira
Yellow Card
Roma
79' A cynical sliding challenge from Oliveira in midfield catches Gagliardini right in front of the referee. It's a yellow card for the Roma player, who will also miss his side's next fixture as a result of the booking.
E. Shomurodov
T. Abraham
Roma
78' Abraham's disappointing evening comes to a close after 78 minutes with relatively little service. Shomurodov is tasked with seeing out the remainder of the match.
M. Viña
N. Zalewski
Roma
78' Vina is on for Zalewski as Mourinho makes a change at wing-back.
76' It looks to be a calm final 15 minutes for Inter, who had the points seemingly wrapped up at half-time. Handanovic hasn’t had to do very much to earn his clean sheet except for a comfortably catch on a Pellegrini effort though perhaps the visitors could spoil the party with a late goal in a second-consecutive game.
74' Zalewski wins a corner on the left but Veretout’s delivery is disappointing, allowing Gagliardini to easily clear it away.
R. Gosens
I. Perišić
Internazionale
72' Former Atalanta wing-back Gosens is on for an appearance, giving Perisic a rest.
R. Gagliardini
M. Brozović
Internazionale
72' Brozovic is given a rest after his fantastic goal - with Gagliardini getting a chance to impress.
70' Veretout made his Serie A debut against Inter in August 2017, with Fiorentina – he scored a 101st minute penalty against the Nerazzurri in February 2019 in a game which finished 3-3.
68' Perez’s high boot catches Brozovic, giving Inter a free-kick in midfield with which to spread play and move the ball out of their own half.
66' Barella's low cross is left by Martinez but Correa fails to read the intent of his international team-mate, also leaving the ball for someone else. It allows Karsdorp to clear the danger easily but it's another warning for the Roma defence.
Carles Pérez
S. El Shaarawy
Roma
64' Perez gets a chance to change the result with just under a half-hour remaining. El Shaarawy makes way.
J. Veretout
L. Pellegrini
Roma
64' Changes for Roma as well with Veretout in for Pellegrini.
A. Bastoni
F. Dimarco
Internazionale
64' A change in defence sees Bastoni sent on for Dimarco.
J. Correa
E. Džeko
Internazionale
63' Correa replaces Dzeko as the former Roma striker is brought off after 63 minutes.
62' Inzaghi looks to be preparing changes just after the hour, with the result looking comfortable for the Nerazzurri. The hosts have a fixture midweek against Bologna and will no doubt look to preserve their energy ahead of that tie.
60' Mourinho took charge of Inter for 76 Serie A games between 2008 and 2010, averaging 2.2 points per game – should he lose this match, the Nerazzurri would be the only team against which the Portuguese has lost 100% of his matches against (among sides he’s faced more than once in the competition).
58' Pellegrini has a sight of goal from outside the penalty area and opts to pick out the far corner but he fails to beat the alert Handanovic.
56' Despite coming out positively to start the second half, Roma have been thoroughly unable to stop the variety of Inter’s attacks, with Mourinho’s side conceding within 10 minutes either side of the interval. It looks like Roma will have to regroup and look to go again next week while limiting the damage at the Meazza.
54' Play is now stopped for Barella, who has gone down in midfield holding his hip after a challenge from Oliveira. The Italy international looks to be in some pain and may not be risked further depending on the extent of the knock.
H. Çalhanoğlu
Assist
Internazionale
52' It's a pair of assists on the night for Calhanoglu, who picks up his second with an accurate corner for Martinez to finish.
L. Martínez
Goal
Internazionale
52' INTER FIND A THIRD! Calhanoglu gets another chance to deliver a corner from the right and this time he takes it to perfection, finding the leaping Martinez six yards from goal. In-between Abraham and Mancini, the Argentina international manages to rise highest and power his header towards goal!
51' Calhanoglu’s corner from the right is a poor effort that dribbles slowly towards the near post, where Mkhitaryan clears it emphatically.
49' Inter put the ball out of play for Ibanez, who has stayed down after a heavy but fair challenge put in by Skriniar. The referee was happy to let the game continue but after urging from the Roma players Brozovic turns back and passes it out of play to give the centre-back a chance to get back to his feet.
47' Pellegrini’s inswinging corner is easily cleared away by the head of Dzeko as Roma start the second half on the front foot.
46' Inter get the match restarted from the kick-off!
Without much else in the way of options, Roma will have to come out in the second half intent on attacking. If they can find a goal in the early stages of the second period, perhaps it will dent Inter’s confidence and provide the Giallorossi a way back. Shomurodov and Afena-Gyan are the most likely options to help through the centre of the pitch, while Veretout’s creative passing could assist in the build-up. Inter will look to keep the intensity of the match at a minimum and look to maintain their clean sheet, with D’Ambrosio and Gosens available to provide some solidity in the late stages.
In a match of few chances, Inter have proved the far more clinical side, leading 2-0 at the half-time interval thanks to goals from Dumfries and Brozovic.. The Nerazzurri started the match with much more confidence, pressing and harrying their opponents and causing a number of key turnovers as a result of their efforts. Mancini’s missed opportunity from a header just before the half-hour mark looked to signal the beginning of a good spell for Roma but Dumfries’ goal with pace and precision just 60 seconds later changed the entire complexion of the match. Brozovic would add a second with a spectacular individual goal with five minutes remaining in the half, leaving Mourinho’s side looking frustrated and forlorn.
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: INTER 2-0 ROMA.
M. Brozović
Yellow Card
Internazionale
45' + 1' Brozovic is shown a yellow card for a cynical pullback on Pellegrini in midfield.
44' The fourth official indicates one minute will be added to the end of the half for stoppages.
42' Roma found their way back into an important match last week with El Shaarawy's 91st minute equaliser against Napoli but it looks to be a significantly more difficult task today, two goals down against the current league leaders as things stand.
I. Perišić
Assist
Internazionale
40' Perisic gets the assist for his throughball that put Brozovic in position to hit his strike.
M. Brozović
Goal
Internazionale
40' SENSATIONAL FINISH! 2-0! It’s goals in back to back league games for Brozovic, who enters the penalty area on the left-hand side after a leading pass from Perisic before cutting inside and shifting ahead of Mancini and Oliveira to work just enough space for a curling right-footed effort that beats the goalkeeper!
38' Calhanoglu looks to catch Patricio off-guard with a low shot to the near post from the free-kick but the well-placed wall does its job to repel the danger.
G. Mancini
Yellow Card
Roma
36' Mancini steps on Dimarco’s foot just outside the penalty area on the left side - giving Inter a real chance to double their lead from the set-piece while the Roma centre-back is shown a yellow card.
34' Dzeko looks to slip Dumfries in-behind the defence once again but this time Ibanez’s awareness disrupts the connection.
32' It's been a terribly last few minutes for Roma, who miss a golden opportunity at one end only to see their failure to capitalise lead to a goal at the other. Mourinho is displeased on the sideline as his team look to get back into the game but it’s quite a hill to climb from here.
H. Çalhanoğlu
Assist
Internazionale
30' Calhanoglu's inch-perfect pass slipped Dumfries through on goal - giving him the assist.
D. Dumfries
Goal
Internazionale
30' INTER TAKE THEIR CHANCE AT THE OTHER END! 1-0! A lovely interchange in midfield on the counter-attack by the Nerazzurri gives Calhanoglu the time and space to pick out a pass for Dumfries - sending the wing-back on a central run through the vacated defence. The Netherlands international bursts into the penalty area and coolly slots a left-footed finish past Patricio!
29' WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY! Pellegrini whips in the set-piece with trademark accuracy, finding Mancini six yards from goal. The Roma centre-back outjumps De Vrij but misses the top corner of the goal narrowly!
28' Brozovic catches Pellegrini with a cynical challenge, hacking at the ankles of the Roma captain. The referee immediately awards Roma a free-kick on the right edge of the penalty area.
26' Dimarco’s corner from the left is unmet in the heart of the penalty area and miscued by Ibanez, giving Barella a chance to recollect possession and trouble Roma from the second phase of the set-piece.
24' Neither side are finding it easy to break down their opponents, with the matching three-man defences causing a bit of a logjam in the middle of the park. It’s also certainly a nervy affair at the Giuseppe Meazza, with both teams really needing the three points.
22' Pellegrini’s corner from the left is a low delivery that’s met with a flick at the near post by Abraham but Skriniar’s block prevents Handanovic from being called into action.
21' Mkhitaryan tries his luck with a long-range shot following an Inter giveaway in midfield but the low strike fails to find the bottom corner, sailing wide for a goal-kick.
19' GREAT SAVE! Calhanoglu is allowed far too much space to turn in midfield following a throw-in, controlling the ball before whacking an effort that seemed destined for the top corner. Patricio comes flying across his line to paw the shot away - keeping the score level!
17' The patient Roma move ends with a Karsdorp cross to the far post looking for El Shaarawy. Skriniar and Handanovic converge to the spot and ultimately block the forward’s route to the ball - allowing the defender to clear the danger.
15' Roma are taking their time when in possession, building it from the back and giving nearly everybody a touch. They haven’t had a chance to settle in the match thus far so their relatively untroubled spell with the ball should do the visitors some good.
13' Inter remain unbeaten in their last nine Serie A matches against Roma (W3 D6) - the last side to reach 10 straight matches without defeat against the Giallorossi in the competition was Milan between 1988 and 1996 (17).
11' Zalewski is pinned back near his own corner-flag facing towards goal before finding a desperate pass back to Ibanez. Inter’s press is rewarded ultimately however as the centre-back’s clearance flies immediately out for a throw-in to the hosts high up the pitch.
9' Dzeko drops deeper to pick up possession and allow his team-mates to flood forward but Zalewski gets ahead of Dumfries to shield the ball out for a goal-kick.
7' Calhanoglu and Dimarco stand over the set-piece but it’s the defender who strikes it, sending his bouncing shot comfortably towards Patricio.
6' Ibanez pushes Barella off the ball 30 yards from goal, giving Inter a free-kick with which to test the goalkeeper.
5' Dumfries finds Brozovic in the middle of the park and the Croatia international uses his time to slip a pass between Roma’s centre-backs but neither Martinez nor Barella is able to get on the end of the ball ahead of Patricio.
3' Dimarco strides forward from centre-back and clips a cross into the penalty area for former Roma striker Dzeko but Smalling rises high to nod away the delivery on the edge of his box.
1' Roma get the match underway from the kick-off!
Roma make two changes from their 1-1 draw with Napoli on Monday as injuries to Bryan Cristante and Nicolo Zaniolo force Mkhitaryan and El Shaarawy into action.
Inter make three changes from the XI that beat Spezia 3-1 last Friday. De Vrij and Dimarco replace D’Ambrosio and Bastoni in the defence, while Martinez is chosen ahead of Correa to partner Dzeko.

With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let’s take a look at how the two sides are lining up - starting with our hosts!
Five points back of Juventus with five games to go, this evening’s encounter at the Meazza is a must-win scenario for fifth-place Roma in the race for a potential Champions League spot. A draw last week against title hopefuls Napoli arrested a run of three-straight victories for the Giallorossi, going back to a 3-0 win in the Derby della Capitale just over a month ago.
Inter welcome Jose Mourinho’s Roma to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza looking to add yet another twist to what has been a sensational title race in Italy this season. Two points back of leaders Milan having played a match fewer, the Nerazzurri will be looking to supersede their rivals in the standings ahead of Milan’s match tomorrow against Roma foils; Lazio.
