Manchester United v Brighton & Hove Albion Live Commentary, 07/08/2022

1 - 2
A. Mac Allister (68 og)
P. Groß (30)
P. Groß (39)
Old Trafford

Brighton's Premier League campaign is off to a flyer then. United head to Brentford next looking to recover from their false start. That's all for now. Goodbye!
Only Danny Murphy has scored more winning goals against United in the Premier League than Gross' three now. The Brighton man is United's modern bete noire. Ten Hag's become the first United boss to lose his first Premier League game in charge since Louis van Gaal in August 2014 against Swansea City. United will improve under him, for sure, but how much?
Gross' two first-half goals are enough to hand Brighton their first win ever away to United at Old Trafford! Brighton deserve the victory, having capitalised on United's ponderousness in the opening 45 minutes. United livened up in the second half and managed to pull a goal back, but couldn't find a leveller.
D. Undav
D. Welbeck
Brighton & Hove Albion
90' + 5' Here's that Brighton change. Undav replaces Welbeck, who caused United plenty of problems in the first half.
90' + 4' Brighton appear to have done enough to see the win out as Elanga's caught offside. They're about to make one final change.
90' + 2' Brighton get a welcome free-kick near the byline as Malacia impedes Lamptey. They decide to attack from it, and United clear, but it eats up a few valuable seconds for the hosts.
L. Colwill
S. March
Brighton & Hove Albion
90' + 1' Brighton are shutting up shop. Colwill, a centre-back on loan from Chelsea, replaces March.
A. Elanga
J. Sancho
Manchester United
90' United are going for broke as we enter five minutes of added time. Elanga replaces Sancho first.
T. Malacia
L. Shaw
Manchester United
90' Shaw is the last United player to make way for now. Malacia replaces him at left-back.
A. Garnacho
Bruno Fernandes
Manchester United
90' Fernandes heads off too. The 18-year-old Garnacho, a new arrival from Atletico Madrid, comes on for United.
88' Mwepu clears upfield for Welbeck to chase. The Brighton forward can't do anything with the pass though, and the ball's soon back with United. It's going to be a long last few minutes for Brighton here.
87' Eriksen's corner lands for Martinez. The Argentine's first header is blocked, and Dunk makes a heroic sliding block at the near post to prevent Martinez's second left-footed shot from testing Sanchez. Sanchez gathers the ball.
86' Eriksen's deflected shot is kept alive by United. Sancho fizzes the ball across the face of goal, but Sanchez gets a strong hand to it. United come again and Ronaldo wins his team a corner.
85' Welbeck holds up the ball and waits for Lamptey racing forward down the right. The substitute skips into the box but can't beat Shaw.
83' Sancho beats one Brighton defender in the box but can't get past a second. The United winger's been quiet for the most part.
82' After enduring a long spell of United pressure, Brighton have managed to settle things down slightly. Mac Allister's powerful strike from distance bounces wide of goal.
81' Gross latches onto a crossfield pass to nod the ball down for the arriving Welbeck. Maguire gets to it first.
80' Sancho tries to free Ronaldo to the right of the box. The pass has a touch too much power on it.
D. van de Beek
S. McTominay
Manchester United
78' United make another attacking substitution. Van de Beek replaces McTominay in the hosts' midfield.
77' Martinez has the space to shoot from range and does so. It's way over the crossbar, but United rightly sense they could snatch a result here if they can score again soon.
E. Mwepu
A. Lallana
Brighton & Hove Albion
76' Lallana's game for Brighton is over too. Mwepu is his replacement.
T. Lamptey
L. Trossard
Brighton & Hove Albion
75' Brighton decide to make a few changes. Lamptey replaces Trossard at wing-back first.
L. Shaw
Yellow Card
Manchester United
74' Shaw's shown the yellow card for a poor challenge on Welbeck, who's looking increasingly isolated up front.
72' United are peppering Brighton's box with shots and crosses at every opportunity. Dalot cuts onto his right foot to shoot at Sanchez, who fumbles the shot. Brighton clear at the second attempt.
70' United force another corner down their right. This one's less successful, but the momentum's undoubtedly with the hosts now.
A. Mac Allister
Own Goal
Brighton & Hove Albion
68' GOAL! MANCHESTER UNITED 1-2 BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION! United's corner comes in. The ball bounces off Dalot towards the bottom right corner. Sanchez jumps across to keep it out, but Mac Allister gets there first to put it into his own net. That'll go down as a Mac Allister own goal after a quick VAR check for handball.
66' Sanchez dives to his right to keep out Eriksen's skidding shot from the edge of the box. United get a corner out of it...
64' United are getting closer to scoring, but not close enough yet. Dalot looks up and floats a cross towards Brighton's box. It sails over Ronaldo to Rashford at the far post, but the Englishman's left-footed volley is off-target.
62' Brighton get a corner. Trossard's delivery finds the head of Webster, whose tame header is easily caught by De Gea.
60' Chance for United! Dalot's cross from the right finds Rashford alone in the box. Sanchez races off his line to deny Rashford at close range. Brighton smuggle the ball away. Sanchez is rightly delighted with his intervention. It's a big save in every sense of the word. Ronaldo is offside anyway.
59' Rashford's pass inside for McTominay doesn't work out. Brighton attempt to press United into a mistake. De Gea keeps his cool to help his side escape their own third.
57' Dalot's brought down by March to hand United a free-kick near the right corner of the box. Eriksen swings it in. Brighton clear and counter down their left through Trossard. Eriksen tracks back to kill the attack off.
55' United force two corners, the second down their left which Eriksen takes. Dunk gets to it first with a dominant header, but Brighton have nowhere to go for the time being.
L. Trossard
Yellow Card
Brighton & Hove Albion
53' Trossard's booked for an off-the-ball confrontation with Maguire after the United captain trips him. It's much ado about nothing really.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Manchester United
53' Meanwhile, Ronaldo has strolled up front for United. Fred is the player sacrificed to bring him on.
H. Maguire
Yellow Card
Manchester United
53' Maguire's shown a yellow card for his part in the argument too. Less of that please.
52' Rashford knocks the ball ahead of himself and lashes left-footed into the side netting. Ronaldo is getting ready to come on.
50' Rashford takes down Dalot's cross, shifts onto his right foot, and blasts the ball against a Brighton defender. United are getting the ball into Brighton's box more quickly now.
48' United carelessly give the ball away again. Trossard picks out a cross, and Welbeck nods wide from the centre of the box.
47' Shaw's left-wing cross meets a Brighton head, and the visitors clear. Brighton look in no mood to let their well-deserved lead slip.
46' United get the second half going. They've got Ronaldo on the bench if they need him. It feels like they will at some stage.
Gross has become the third player to score twice against United in their opening match of the season after Brian Deane in 1992-93 and Louis Saha in 2001-02. United have now trailed at half-time in three consecutive league games for the first time since October 2018. It's hard to see Ten Hag's men coming back from here, but we'll see.
The Gross Point Blank headlines are ready and waiting as things stand. Two close-range finishes by the German have put clinical Brighton in a commanding position over their toothless hosts. The Ten Hag revolution at United looks like it's going to take a while.
Lisandro Martínez
Yellow Card
Manchester United
45' + 2' Martiinez dawdles on the ball and is outmuscled by March. The Argentine's booked for bringing March down in response.
45' Shaw shoots from a difficult angle. It's an easy take for Sanchez. There'll be two minutes more of this before Ten Hag can sort United out.
43' Eriksen finds enough time to backheel the ball inside the six-yard box, but he doesn't have a teammate near him. Brighton gratefully clear.
41' Fred puts a routine pass out of play down the left. United are understandably flustered. This wasn't how things were supposed to go now Ten Hag is in charge.
P. Groß
Brighton & Hove Albion
39' GOAL! MANCHESTER UNITED 0-2 BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION! Gross doubles Brighton's lead! The visitors race upfield from near their own corner flag, and March shifts onto his left foot to shoot. De Gea can't hold the shot, and Gross lashes the rebound into the top right corner!
37' Welbeck hooks wide with a first-time right-footed shot as he's successfully found in the box by Lallana. United are struggling to handle their former forward at the moment.
36' Fred shoots slightly desperately from outside the box. The ball flies high and wide to ironic cheers from Brighton's supporters.
34' "You're going down with the Palace!", the Brighton fans in the away end crow. United don't look that bad, but they've been unconvincing so far.
32' Gross has scored five goals against United in the Premier League, two more than he has against any other team. Only Mohamed Salah has scored more against the Red Devils than the German since he arrived at Brighton in 2017-18.
D. Welbeck
Brighton & Hove Albion
30' United were caught out badly there. Their attempted offside trap didn't work, and Welbeck had way too much time to pick his pass for Gross.
P. Groß
Brighton & Hove Albion
30' GOAL! MANCHESTER UNITED 0-1 BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION! United have work to do! Trossard frees Welbeck down the left. The Englishman looks up and rolls the ball towards the far post, where Gross arrives to finish from point-blank range.
29' Brighton send the corner in. Their captain Dunk gets his head on the end of it but can't keep his header down. He yells in frustration.
27' Play resumes with Caicedo looking right as rain again. Brighton pass tidily on the edge of United's box. Mac Allister shoots from a central position. It's deflected out for a corner.
S. McTominay
Yellow Card
Manchester United
25' McTominay arrives late on Caicedo, who requires treatment. McTominay receives the game's first yellow card.
24' Welbeck stretches his neck to reach Caicedo's cross inside the six-yard box, but United block the header. The hosts quickly counter, and Eriksen scoops the ball straight into the arms of Sanchez.
22' Rashford dribbles himself into trouble down the left. Brighton clear and United rebuild, only for Eriksen's ambitious throughball to float harmlessly out of play. United are playing almost too thoughtfully.
20' Caicedo curls a right-footed cross towards the far post from the left. Welbeck leaps for it but can't make a convincing connection with his head.
18' Trossard and Gross spy shooting opportunities from way out. Both are quickly closed down. Brighton aren't creating much, but they're making life difficult for United.
16' Brighton are pressing high up the pitch, making it hard for United to escape their half. Ten Hag is standing making notes inside the technical area.
14' Brighton win the second ball from a goal-kick. Welbeck finds himself in possession near the byline but slips at the vital moment, allowing Fernandes to nip in and clear the ball away.
12' Welbeck's speculative effort from outside the box clatters against a defender.
10' United venture past the halfway line but can't find a way through Brighton's compact block. Ten Hag's men will have their work cut out to break their visitors down.
8' United are playing confidently from the back, but they've got to be careful. The hosts give the ball away, and Fred makes a timely challenge to stop Trossard from shooting.
6' Chance for United! McTominay's shot from the right is blocked. He cuts the ball back for Fernandes, who blazes over from the centre of the box. That should have been a shot on target, at least.
4' Fernandes tries to run onto Rashford's pass into the channel but strays offside. United have lined up with Eriksen playing as a false nine.
3' Rashford, who's started on the left for United, jinks inside and looks for the right throughball on the edge of the box. He can't find it though.
2' Brighton get a shot off early as Trossard latches onto an over-the-top ball to fire over from the left of the box.
1' The players take the knee, and the visitors Brighton get both of these clubs' seasons underway!
This is the first time that United will open a top-flight season against Brighton in their history, a reminder of Brighton's rapid progress in recent years. The Seagulls have never won away at Old Trafford, although they thrashed United 4-0 at home in their last league meeting in May. United's players will no doubt want to make amends for that game here.
Brighton name a starting 11 made entirely of players who were on their books last season. Welbeck starts up front against his childhood club. Chelsea loanee Colwill is named on the bench.
Ten Hag's first United line-up has a familiar feel to it, but he does hand Martinez and Eriksen their first league starts for the club. Rashford leads the line up front. Ronaldo will start this game on the bench.
SUBS: Tariq Lamptey, Jan-Paul van Hecke, Kaoru Mitoma, Jeremy Sarmiento, Jason Steele, Neal Maupay, Enock Mwepu, Levi Samuels Colwill, Deniz Undav.
BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION (3-4-3): Robert Sanchez; Joel Veltman, Lewis Dunk (c), Adam Webster; Solly March, Alexis Mac Allister, Moises Caicedo, Leandro Trossard; Pascal Gross, Danny Welbeck, Adam Lallana.

Brighton enjoyed their highest ever top-flight finish last season under Graham Potter, winding up in ninth place. The Seagulls ended last season strongly, losing just one of their last nine Premier League games. Potter's team are hard to beat and will be an early test of United's capabilities this campaign.
It's a new season and a new boss for United as Erik ten Hag becomes the eighth manager (including caretakers) to take charge of the Red Devils since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. Six of United's previous seven bosses in that time have won their first game in charge of the club; Ten Hag will want an equally good start as he aims to get the club back into the top four.
