Commentary

That's all for today, goodbye!
Liverpool stay second in the group, while Rangers are bottom, still in search of their first goal and points. These two will face each other again next Wednesday, but they're in league action first, with Liverpool travelling to Arsenal and Rangers facing St Mirren at the weekend.
Liverpool get back to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Rangers. Alexander-Arnold broke the deadlock seven minutes in with a wonderful free-kick which he lifted over the wall into the top corner. Nunez could've had a hat-trick in the first half, but McGregor kept him out with some great saves. After the break, Liverpool kept the pressure on and Salah added a second with a good penalty after Diaz was brought down by King. Rangers managed just one shot on target, in the 85th minute when Alisson denied Colak.
90' + 5' FULL-TIME: LIVERPOOL 2-0 RANGERS.
J. Gomez
T. Alexander-Arnold
90' + 3' The final change for Liverpool sees Alexander-Arnold replaced by Gomez.
T. Alexander-Arnold
Yellow Card
90' + 2' It's a late challenge from Alexander-Arnold on Matondo, and he's shown a yellow card.
90' + 2' It's switched out to Matondo on the left, and he lays it off to Colak on the edge of the box. He tries to knock it past Milner, but the midfielder slides in with a perfectly-timed tackle to stop him.
90' It's a hopeful clearance from Tavernier, as he switches it out towards the left, but Kamara is close to it. Alexander-Arnold spots the danger though and gets across to hook it away.
88' Liverpool are back in possession and they're patiently working it upfield again. Tsimikas tries to link up with Diaz down the left, but there's too much on the throughball, and it rolls harmlessly out of play.
86' GOOD SAVE! It's taken until the 86th minute, but Rangers have their first shot on target. Tavernier swung in the corner and Sakala's header is blocked by Elliott at the far post. It bounces back to Colak, who volleys it towards goal, but Alisson smothers it.
85' BLOCK! Rangers catch Liverpool out on the break and Matondo cuts inside from the left before drilling a low cross under Allison's legs. Sakala is running onto it at the far post, but Tsimikas recovers brilliantly to hook it over the bar from close range.
84' CLOSE! Tsimikas swings the resulting corner into the box and he whips his cross to the edge of the six-yard box. Matip gets in front of King to thump a header towards the far post, but it bounces just wide of the target.
83' Rangers lose it deep in their own half yet again, and Milner pounces on the loose ball. He tries to swing an early cross into the box towards Firmino, but King blocks it.
G. Kamara
B. Davies
81' And Davies is also making way, with Kamara on in his place.
R. Matondo
R. Kent
81' Rangers are making their final changes as well. Kent is taken off and replaced by Matondo.
J. Milner
Thiago Alcântara
81' And Milner is also brought on in place of Thiago.
H. Elliott
D. Núñez
80' Another double change for Liverpool here. Nunez goes off to a standing ovation from the crowd, with Elliott on to replace him.
78' Another long ball over the top catches Rangers out, and Nunez brings it down on the edge of the box. The visitors flood back into their box though and it's Goldson that blocks his half-volley.
76' Salah has scored as many Champions League goals (two in three games) as he has Premier League goals (two in seven) this season.
74' WHAT A CHANCE! Fabinho nicks it off Jack and picks out Salah's run down the right. He cuts inside, drawing McGregor out to him, and fizzes a cross to the near post. Diaz stretches to poke it towards goal, but King is in the right place to deflect it wide.
A. Čolak
A. Morelos
73' Third change for Rangers now, and Colak is coming on to replace Morelos, who has struggled to get into this game.
72' Alexander-Arnold spots Diaz peeling off the back of his defender on the opposite flank. The Colombian sets off too early though and the move is cut off by the linesman's flag.
Fabinho
J. Henderson
70' And Henderson doesn't look too happy to be taken off as he hands the armband to Van Dijk. Fabinho is on for him.
Roberto Firmino
Diogo Jota
69' Liverpool are making their own double change now. Jota is the first to go off, with Jota replacing him.
68' The substitutes link up well for the visitors, with Sakala playing a one-two to open up a pocket of space on the right of the box. He gets his angles all wrong though and drills his low shot well wide of the near post.
R. Jack
S. Davis
66' And Davies is also making way, with Jack on in his place.
F. Sakala
M. Tillman
66' Rangers are making a double change as they look to get back into this game. Tillman is the first to go off, with Sakala on for him.
65' Liverpool are still piling the pressure on here, but it's causing Rangers to drop back into their shape to block off the space ahead of them again.
63' Alexander-Arnold is given too much space down the right and he clips another good cross into the box. Nunez is making a late run to the far post, but Goldson gets a vital touch to flick it out of his reach.
61' Again, Rangers lose the ball before they break over the halfway line, and Tsimikas picks out Jota through the middle. He lays it off to Salah on the edge of the box, but his throughball to Nunez is straight against Davies.
59' GREAT SAVE! King slides in to stop it from reaching Diaz, but Lundstram plays a blind backpass into the crowded box. It ends up being a good ball for Jota, who spins before firing his shot towards the top corner, and McGregor gets fingertips to it to help it over the bar.
57' Rangers are still struggling to get out of their own half, as Morelos drops deep to get on the ball. He has nobody getting forward in support though, and he quickly loses out to Van Dijk.
55' Diaz is off-balance and clips Goldson as he falls to the ground, catching the defender with his studs. The game initially continued, but they're now receiving treatment. They'll both be able to carry on.
Mohamed Salah
Penalty Goal
53' SALAH SCORES! He takes a long run-up to the spot, shifting right and left as he tries to catch out McGregor. Salah gets a lot of power behind the strike and sends it straight down the middle as the keeper dives to his left. 2-0 Liverpool!
52' PENALTY TO LIVERPOOL! Diaz cuts inside from the left again and Lundstram has the first swipe at him before King clumsily crashes into him in a tangle of legs. There's no hesitation from the referee, who points straight to the spot.
50' Davis picks Thiago's pocket after a loose touch from the Spaniard, and he picks out Kent's run down the left. He sends a low cross towards the far post, but nobody is following in for Rangers and it rolls harmlessly wide.
48' Liverpool have picked up where they left off and Salah is bearing down on a backpass to McGregor. The goalkeeper comes out and slices at it, but Barisic is on hand to help clear the danger.
46' Liverpool get us back underway for the second half!
Klopp will be pleased with his side's response after last weekend; they looked dangerous every time they've gone forward and were in control in the first half, so he'll be wanting more of the same. For the most part, Rangers were sloppy in possession, causing their own problems. They couldn't cope with Liverpool's threat and Van Bronckhorst might be thinking about changes.
Alexander-Arnold's early free-kick gives Liverpool a 1-0 half-time lead over Rangers. He picked out the near-top corner just seven minutes in, lifting a wonderful strike over the wall and out of McGregor's reach. It's been a good first half for Liverpool though, and they could've had more if not for McGregor, who made four great saves to keep out Nunez as well as denying Diaz and Salah.
45' + 1' HALF-TIME: LIVERPOOL 1-0 RANGERS.
45' Tsimikas goes long down the left this time, and Diaz catches King with a clever flick. He slides it through for Jota, who fizzes a low cross into the near post, but it bounces out for a goal-kick off Nunez.
43' GOOD SAVE! Diaz starts the move with a backheel on the halfway line and Jota threads a wonderful throughball between two defenders to pick out Nunez. On the half-turn, he hits a first-time shot towards goal, but McGregor gets down smartly to deny him again.
41' GREAT SAVE! Salah checks Kent to keep hold of the ball and carries it through Rangers' half. He feeds it through to Nunez, who timed his run perfectly again, but his low shot is well saved by McGregor with his legs.
39' It's better from Rangers here as they enjoy their first real spell of possession. Kent combines with Barisic down the left, but he can't find a way past Van Dijk when he cuts inside.
J. Lundstram
Yellow Card
37' Jota chests it down and spins away from Lundstram, who stretches out a leg to try and stop him. He clips his heels and picks up the first yellow card of the game.
36' CHANCE! Diaz has two Rangers players ahead of him down the left, but Davis reads it wrong, allowing the Colombian to cut inside. The space opens up so he hits a low shot towards goal, but McGregor gets down to hold it.
34' GREAT SAVE! It's a lovely chipped pass over the top from Henderson, and Nunez times his run perfectly to stay onside. He takes a touch before trying to lift his shot over McGregor, but the goalkeeper gets a strong hand to it.
33' Rangers are dropping deeper and deeper into their half as Liverpool pile the pressure on. The hosts are patiently trying to open them up, but with no luck at the moment.
31' Yet another loose pass from Rangers, this time from Tavernier, and Alexander-Arnold comes away with it. He drives down the right, but the cross lets him down at the end of it as Goldson clears his lines.
29' Liverpool win the ball high upfield again and Diaz goes for the big switch out to Tsimikas. A loose touch takes it away from him though, and Tillman is able to see it out for a goal-kick.
27' Still, Liverpool keep the pressure on and Alexander-Arnold swings in their second corner in a row. It skims over Van Dijk's head and Jota can't reach it on the stretch at the far post.
25' Alexander-Arnold keeps it in play, but only to gift possession to Barisic. Three Rangers players burst into Liverpool's half, but the defender takes too long on the ball and Henderson wins it back.
23' It's sloppy from Rangers in their own half as they lose the ball, and Van Dijk squares it into Salah. He cushions it out to Alexander-Arnold on the edge of the box, but his first-time shot is blocked by Davies.
21' Since the start of the 2016-17 season, Alexander-Arnold has scored six direct free-kick goals in all competitions, more than any other Liverpool player in this period.
19' Kent is sent sprawling by Thiago, and Rangers have a free-kick in a good position. Tavernier steps up but fires his shot straight against the wall before Kent blazes the follow-up high over the bar.
17' Morelos pushes his way into Liverpool's half and does well to hold off Matip before laying it off to Tillman. He's forced wide by Tsimikas though and Van Dijk gets across to clear it.
15' GOOD SAVE! Nunez knocks it out to Salah and he has acres of space to run into down the right. Barisic backs off as he cuts inside, so he curls a low shot towards the far corner, and McGregor gets a touch to turn it wide.
13' CHANCE! Diaz weaves through Rangers' midfield and the space opens up from him on the edge of the D. He decides to have a go himself, but slices his shot just wide of the far corner.
11' Again, Rangers lose the ball when they advance out of their own half, and Matip hooks it upfield for Nunez to chase down the right. He can't get there ahead of Lundstram and ends up giving away a free-kick.
9' Lundstram is caught on the ball on the halfway line, and Alexander-Arnold quickly plays it down the line for Nunez. Salah is asking for the early cross, but it's blocked by Barisic.
T. Alexander-Arnold
Goal
7' ALEXANDER-ARNOLD SCORES! There was a lot of conversation about who was going to take the free-kick, but it's Alexander-Arnold that stepped up. It's a wonderful hit from the right-back as he lifts it over the wall and straight into the near top corner, and McGregor can't get close. 1-0 Liverpool!
6' Rangers are struggling to get a touch on the ball as Tsimikas plays a couple of one-twos as he cuts inside. Nunez is brought down when he controls it on the edge of the box, and Liverpool have a free-kick just outside the D.
4' Liverpool are keeping the pressure on here and Henderson goes long, trying to pick out Nunez's run. He takes his eyes off it as it drops over his shoulder though, and Davies hooks it away.
2' GOOD SAVE! Liverpool have made a bright start, with Salah carrying it forward down the right before sliding in Jota. Davies slides in, but the forward lifts it over him for Nunez, and McGregor makes himself big to smother his first-time shot,
1' Kent gets the game underway for Rangers!
The teams are out on the pitch now, with kick-off just moments away!
Liverpool have won 13 of their last 15 home Champions League group stage matches (D1 L1), scoring 36 goals in those wins. Their only defeat in this run was against Atalanta in November 2020.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst makes four changes from the comfortable win over Hearts on Saturday as they switch to a back five. King, Tillman, Davies and Morelos come into the side. Jack, Matondo, Arfield and Colak start on the bench, while James Sands is suspended after being sent off against Napoli.
Jurgen Klopp makes just three changes to the side that drew with Brighton last time out, and they're all attacking ones, as Jota, Diaz and Nunez are brought into the front line alongside Salah. Firmino, Fabinho and Carvalho drop to the bench, while Konate, Kelleher and Ramsey are also among the substitutes after injury.
RANGERS SUBS: Robby McCrorie, Antonio-Mirko Colak, Rabbi Matondo, Glen Kamara, Jon McLaughlin, Scott Arfield, Ridvan Yilmaz, Ryan Jack, Adam Devine, Fashion Sakala, Scott Wright.
RANGERS STARTING XI (5-4-1): Allan McGregor; James Tavernier, Connor Goldson, Ben Davies, Leon King, Borna Barisic; Malik Tillman, John Lundstram, Steven Davis, Ryan Kent; Alfredo Morelos.

After opening their Champions League campaign with a heavy defeat to Napoli, Liverpool snatched a late 2-1 win at Ajax to get their first points on the board in the competition. They've won just one of their last four in all competitions (D2 L1) - that win over the Dutch champions - and were held to a 3-3 draw against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday. Rangers' return to the Champions League hasn't been everything they hoped for after 4-0 and 3-0 defeats to Ajax and Napoli respectively. They do come into this game having won their last two league games though, after a run of three without a win in all competitions.
