Who is the best coach in the PSL?

The PSL boasts astute coaches who will be looking to guide their teams to success in the upcoming season.

GOAL ranks the best coaches in the PSL:

  • Dan Malesela, Marumo Gallants, April 2022

    5 - Dan Malesela

The 2021-22 season saw the 57-year-old tactician guide Marumo Gallants to the Nedbank Cup final where they were narrowly defeated by Mamelodi Sundowns.

Malesela has since joined Royal AM where he is a co-coach alongside Khabo Zondo having parted ways with Gallants at the end of last season.

Known for his attractive carpet football, Malesela is one of the top coaches in the country and he guided TS Galaxy to a historic Nedbank Cup triumph in 2019 - stunning Kaizer Chiefs in the final.

  • Eric Tinkler, head coach of Cape Town City.

    4 - Eric Tinkler

The Bafana Bafana legend made history with Cape Town City last season as he led the team to a second-place finish in the PSL. It was the Citizens' highest-ever finish in the PSL.

Tinkler is an experienced coach who has guided both Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United to the Confederation Cup final. He remains the only South African coach to lead two teams to the final of the continental tournament.

The 2021 MTN8 finalist with City won his maiden major trophy as a head coach with the Citizens - the 2016 Telkom Knockout Cup in his first stint with the club. He went on to win the 2017 MTN8 title with SuperSport United.

  • Rhulani Mokwena, Mamelodi Sundowns, October 2021

    3 - Rhulani Mokwena

The young tactician is already among the best coaches in the country having enjoyed success with Mamelodi Sundowns as both an assistant and head coach.

Looking at his achievements as a co-head coach, Mokwena, 35, has clinched two league championships, an MTN8 title and Nedbank Cup with his colleague Manqoba Mngqithi.

The duo made history last season by becoming the first co-coaches to win a domestic treble. Therefore, Mokwena and Mngqithi scooped the PSL Coach of the Season accolades having also guided Sundowns to the Caf Champions League quarter-finals.

  • Manqoba Mngqithi, Mamelodi Sundowns, March 2022

    2 - Manqoba Mngqithi

The Umzimkhulu-born tactician is one of the most experienced coaches in the PSL and he remained loyal to Sundowns as an assistant to Pitso Mosimane at the club.

Following Mosimane's departure in Septemner 2020, Mngqithi and Mokwena were appointed as co-head coaches with the opinion of the former prevailing when there isn't consensus.

The 51-year-old mentor has won four major trophies with Mokwena. Mngqithi is a five-time major trophy winner having led Lamontville Golden Arrows to a 2009 MTN8 triumph. He was also nominated for 2021 IFFHS Men's World Best Club Coach award.

  • Gavin Hunt Chippa

    1 - Gavin Hunt

The accomplished tactician is back in the PSL having been unattached for seven months before he was reappointed as the new SuperSport United head coach last month.

Hunt has won eight major trophies including four league championships. The five-time PSL Coach of the Season is the only mentor to have won the league title with three different clubs.

Only Pitso Mosimane has won more domestic league titles (five) than Hunt who is the first coach to guide Kaizer Chiefs to the Caf Champions League group stage (and semi-finals).

Hunt is arguably the best coach in the PSL at the moment and he will be looking to transform SuperSport into a formidable team once again having won three successive league titles with Matsatsantsa between 2008 and 2010.
