Indonesia vs Vietnam Semi-final AFF Cup 06012023

The first leg of the AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup semi-final ended all square in Jakarta, as Indonesia and Vietnam cancelled each other out in a feisty tie at the Gelora Bung Karno.

As one might’ve predicted, it was Vietnam who monopolised the early possession, knocking it from right to left as they sized up their opponents. However, it was Indonesia who were recipients of the first chance, as Marselino headed Marc Klok’s corner just over.

It wouldn’t be the last the Vietnam defence would see of him, however, as he, along with fellow wideman Sayuri, found great joy on the flanks. With the two Indonesian wingers causing havoc for the Golden Stars, it seemed a matter of time before they would turn a chance into a goal.

That nearly happened in the 20th minute, as Marselino again played Dendy Sulistyawan through on goal, but the striker could only muster a poor attempt at a cross with just goalkeeper Dang Van Lam to beat.

The Marselino-Sayuri show continued for the rest of the half, as the latter drew a smart save from Van Lam as his cross was deflected towards the goal, before having a crack from range which flew just wide.

Marselino then went one-on-one with Van Lam, but fired straight at the Vietnam goalkeeper. Van Lam was soon required again, as Pratama Arhan cross was flicked towards goal by Sayuri.

Having been troubled by Indonesia’s width in the first half, Vietnam manager Park Hang-seo sought to secure more control for his side in the second 45, and it worked a treat, as Indonesia were restricted to a number of half chances.

They did, however, have shouts for a penalty turned down in the added time after a coming together between Doan Van Hau and Ricky Kambuaya. Sayuri fired straight at Van Lam from a tight angle soon after, in what turned out to be their last chance of the first leg.

The two sides will meet again in Hanoi to determine who will reach this year’s AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup final, with Vietnam looking to reach their second final in three editions, and Indonesia looking to make it back-to-back final appearances.
