Although he only came on in the first half due to Krafth's injury, Trippier was the substitute who changed the game. His passing ability not only led to both of the goals but also helped bypass the Tranmere press. The home side were relentless all game when pressing but they could not conjure up enough clear chances to force a shootout in the end.
Tranmere shocked everyone when they took the lead with a brilliant one-touch passing move which finished with Nevitt scoring the opener. Lascelles started the comeback for Newcastle as he headed in his own rebound from a Trippier corner. Trippier provided the assist for the winner as Chris Wood put Newcastle with a bullet header from a corner. Newcastle saw the game through despite late pressure from the League Two side.
