Commentary

That's all from us, we'll see you for the second leg! For now though, goodbye.
That 1-1 draw tees up a tense second leg with all to play for back in Manchester, which the two sides will contest in three weeks' time. City will take plenty from their first half showing, but need to vastly improve on a below-par performance in the second. Leipzig scratched the first period from their memory during the interval of this game, and will head to England full of confidence following a second-half in which their relentless pressing made City look fairly ordinary.
21-year-old centre-back Josko Gvardiol produced a performance beyond his years in this game, heading home the equaliser and cutting out many a City attack at the other end. The Croatian scored with his only attempt, and completed more touches and passes than any of his teammates. Defensively, he was consistently involved, winning two of his six total duels - four of which came in the air. He won possession 11 times, by far the most of anyone on the pitch, and completed a tackle and two clearances to round off a superb all-round performance. Bullish.
It's all over in east Germany, and the tie ends with the sides level! City failed to capitalise on a first half that was one-way traffic in every sense of the word, and went into their shells as the hosts seized control in the second. Gvardiol's bullet header of an equaliser gave Leipzig parity, and the RB side had several chances to take the lead, with Werner, Silva and Szoboszlai all testing the goalkeeper. Red Bull custodian Blaswich twice denying Gundogan from notching a winner. A game that turned from sluggish to electrifying finishes level though, setting up an eagerly-anticipated second leg in Manchester!
90' + 3' Mahrez wins a late, late corner for City, and after a one-two with Gundogan, crosses into the box. It's flicked on by Rodri and takes a ricochet, but Blaswich smothers the ball for Leipzig in what'll likely be the game's last action.
90' + 3' FULL-TIME: RB LEIPZIG 1-1 MANCHESTER CITY.
90' + 1' We're into two minutes of added time in this match, and it's been THE definitive tale of two halves here in Leipzig!
B. Henrichs
Yellow Card
90' Gundogan steps inside Henrichs, who catches the Manchester City captain very late indeed and is shown a yellow card by the referee - the first of the game so far!
D. Raum
M. Halstenberg
89' Halstenberg has been making intelligent runs and passes up and down the left edge all game on, and he gets an early rest as David Raum replaces him.
87' City's second half has certainly been a disappointing one by their lofty standards. Leipzig's attack may have come on tenfold, but their defensive performance has remained largely the same, shutting out most of the visitors' chances before they can fully develop. When City have beaten the well-organised defence though, Blaswich between the sticks has been more than equal to their shots on goal for Leipzig.
85' Leipzig work the ball left and Halstenberg crosses for Henrichs at the far post, but he loses out to Grealish in the box and the Manchester City winger's attempt at a counter-attack is halted by Poulsen.
84' Gvardiol fires a long ball forward, looking for the run of Poulsen, but both the run and the pass are overcooked and Ederson recovers the ball for Manchester City.
Y. Poulsen
André Silva
82' Andre Silva is also withdrawn, and Yussuf Poulsen takes his place up front alongside Werner.
A. Haidara
X. Schlager
82' More changes coming for Leipzig, as Schlager, who has had a much-improved second half, comes off for Amadou Haidara.
81' Nkunku looks to spin out of a challenge or two but is taken to ground by a late hit from Mahrez. It's a free-kick to Leipzig, but nothing more as the France forward gets to his feet.
79' Grealish makes a threatening forward run inside from the left, and he tees up Mahrez to shoot from the edge of the box. However, the Algerian chooses the flick the ball wider still for Bernardo Silva, but the pass doesn't stick and the chance goes begging!
77' RB Leipzig have had 66 per cent possession over the last 15 minutes, which shows how much they've grown into this game in the second half. They only managed 26 per cent in the first period!
75' Szoboszlai's ball over the top puts Werner into space with only Nkunku to his right, but Walker again arrives on the scene to close down the space before the RB striker can release a pass.
73' SAVED!!! Grealish takes on Henrichs before dinking the ball inside for Gundogan, whose first-time finish is brilliantly kept out by Blaswich low at his far post!
72' That's Gvardiol's second goal for RB Leipzig this season, both of which have come in the Champions League against giants like Real Madrid and now Manchester City!
M. Halstenberg
Assist
70' Halstenberg's pinpoint cross was right onto the head of an aerially dominant Gvardiol, and City's claims of a foul in the box go unheard as the goal stands!
J. Gvardiol
Goal
70' GOOOOOAAAALLL!!!! Leipzig equalise!!! Halstenberg whips in the cross from a short corner, and Ederson is scrambling as Gvardiol rises high to nod the ball into the far corner!! We're locked up at 1-1, and who saw that coming after RB's performance in the first half?
69' SAVED!!! Walker concedes a needless corner which is headed away by City. Halstenberg recovers it and finds Szoboszlai in space, who fires off a 30-yard piledriver which Ederson tips behind!!
68' WIDE!!! Haaland bursts onto Grealish's throughball and beats Gvardiol for pace in the box, but his right-footed finish is dragged wide of the far post in an uncharacteristic miss from the Norwegian!
67' Forward come Leipzig with some free-flowing football as Andre Silva's flick allows Werner to play a throughball into the box, but Walker slides across to prevent the ball reaching Szoboszlai and City clear!
C. Nkunku
E. Forsberg
66' Forsberg comes off for Leipzig, and the free-scoring Christopher Nkunku will replace him for the hosts.
64' Forsberg's turn out of a challenge sees him beat two defenders before teeing up Henrichs to cross, but his low ball is blocked away by Ake.
63' SAVED!!! Grealish takes on Henrichs before dinking the ball inside for Gundogan, whose first-time finish is brilliantly kept out by Blaswich low at his far post!
63' SAVED!!! Andre Silva latches onto Gvardiol's pass forward, and jinks in and away from Akanji before running clean through. He bears down on goal, but Ederson closes the angle himself and parries the chipped effort from the Leipzig striker!
62' City win the ball in midfield and Haaland races into open pasture, but Gundogan's pass to him is cut out by Orban.
60' Laimer's cross-field pass finds Werner on the fly, but Walker is back quickly to close down the space and prevent Werner running into space down the left flank.
58' Leipzig have certainly had the better of the second period so far, and a former Red Bull player, City's Erling Haaland, is being left alone up top for the visitors. He's yet to take a touch in the Leipzig box, with the RB defence doing well to handle the ex-Salzburg striker thus far.
56' SAVED!!! A long throw is missed by Akanji and Werner races to the loose ball down the left. He looks to flash a cross into the centre of the box, but Ederson intervenes to beat the ball away!
55' WIDE!!! It should be 1-1!!! Red Bull were certainly energised at the break, as Schlager charges forward to find Szoboszlai. On the turn, the Hungarian plays in Henrichs who is in acres of space, but he flashes his low effort wide of the far post with the goal at his mercy!
53' OVER!!! Forsberg switches Leipzig's play to the left and Halstenberg crosses into the area. Henrichs is forward and rises on the penalty spot to head goalwards, but sends his effort over the bar!
52' Mahrez and Bernardo Silva both look to create space to cross from the right, but Leipzig's defence swarms around them and Gvardiol's intervention wins possession back.
50' BLOCKED!! Szoboszlai loses out to Ake, who releases Gundogan into space down the left. He cuts the ball back from the byline, and an arriving Mahrez's shot is blocked on the line by Schlager!
48' City have stopped their opposition from scoring a first-half goal in six of their seven Champions League games in 2022-23, with only Bayern Munich, who are yet to concede a goal in the first 45 minutes, doing so more often this season.
46' Leipzig kick off the second half, and their fans will be hoping for a much more positive showing in the next 45 minutes!
B. Henrichs
L. Klostermann
46' Leipzig make a half-time change as Benjamin Henrichs comes on for Klostermann at right-back.
The sides head back out for the second period, and can Leipzig raise their game to match the Citizens in attack, or will we see more of the same from the dominant visitors?
Mahrez's first-half strike was his third goal in as many games against RB Leipzig, and the Algerian was involved heavily in City's attacks down the right. His only other shot was blocked, while he completed four crosses and created three big chances with key passes. He won half of his two take-ons, and also completed an interception to spark another attack from the visitors. Fizz.
A largely uneventful first 45 minutes come to a close, however Manchester City have a deserved lead at the break. It's been backs-to-the-wall from Leipzig so far, who are doing everything they can to nullify City's attacking threat, while doing very little with the ball themselves. The most notable thing they've done in possession was give it away, as Schlager's error allowed Mahrez to slip in and score the opener. Any further potential openings for the visitors have been quickly shut down by the RB side, but the hosts will need to find some attacking ideas if they're to get anything out of this game.
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: RB LEIPZIG 0-1 MANCHESTER CITY.
45' + 1' SAVED!! Leipzig win the ball high up the field and it comes to Werner on the left. He cuts inside and finds shooting space, but his effort is held by Ederson before it can nestle in the far corner!
45' We'll play one minute of added time to close out this first half, which has been dominated by City from start to finish.
43' City's dominance can be reflected in the fact that their deepest-lying midfielder Rodri has attempted three shots so far, the most of anyone on the pitch. In contrast, Leipzig are yet to register one effort on goal whatsoever.
41' Halstenberg makes a run down the left and is found by a cross-field pass, but his ball into the box for Werner is wildly overhit and floats over the former Chelsea striker's head.
40' Grealish wins a corner via a deflection off Orban and the ball is crossed into the centre of the box. Rodri again arrives late to connect with it, but can't keep his effort down and the ball sails over the bar.
38' Manchester City have only lost one of their previous 17 matches against German opposition in the Champions League, scoring an average of 2.6 goals per game across these fixtures. Their only defeat in fact came in Leipzig, losing 2-1 in last season’s group stage after having already qualified for the knockouts.
36' WIDE!!! Bernardo Silva drives into the box and appears to have been fouled by Laimer, but the City playmaker gets straight back to his feet, keeping the ball in the process. He finds an unmarked Grealish to his left, who cuts inside before fizzing a shot inches wide of the far post!
34' City press the hosts further and further back, to the extent that Blaswich's pass to Gvardiol almost sees the Croatian lose it under pressure from Mahrez, but he recovers to step out of defence in possession.
32' Riyad Mahrez has scored seven and assisted four goals in his last 12 starts in the Champions League knockout stages, and it's the third game in a row that he's scored against Red Bull Leipzig.
30' CHANCE!!! The City corner is driven to the back post, where Rodri arrives late to head the ball back across goal. Haaland's at the opposite stick waiting to pounce, but can't quite connect with the ball as it flashes wide!
29' Walker drives into the area having drifted in-field from the right. He shapes to shoot but eventually squares for Grealish, but the ball is put behind for a corner by Schlager.
İ. Gündoğan
Assist
27' Gundogan's flick there was so clever, ensuring the pace of Grealish's pass was retained just enough for Mahrez to slam home the opener.
R. Mahrez
Goal
27' GOOOOAAALLL!!! City lead following a slip-up at the back from the hosts! Schlager's loose pass is snatched upon by Grealish, who plays it forward towards Mahrez. He runs through as Gundogan flicks the ball into his path, and the Algerian smashes a shot into the bottom-right corner to make it 1-0!! They've had all of the ball, and finally City make their dominance of possession count!
26' Among managers to have taken charge of at least 50 games in the UEFA Champions League, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has the highest win percentage, 63 per cent, in the competition’s history with 97 wins from 154 games.
24' Walker and Gundogan play a one-two that sends the full-back darting down the right, but his near-post cross from the byline is glanced away by Halstenberg.
22' City have had almost all of the ball so far, but are struggling to break through the narrow low block of Leipzig, who look happy to sit deep and defend before promptly dealing with any threatening passes forward.
20' After winning the first three knockout matches they played in the Champions League, RB Leipzig have lost their last three straight without scoring once – losing 3-0 to PSG in their 2020 semi-final before consecutive 2-0 defeats to Liverpool in the round of 16 the year after.
18' City win the ball on the edge of the Leipzig box and Mahrez plays it square. Rodri arrives to strike the ball right on the edge of the area, but sends it flying well over the top.
17' BLOCKED!!! Gundogan and Mahrez stand over the ball, and the latter takes, but it's a poor effort that is hit straight into the Red Bull wall!
16' Grealish cuts inside from the left and heads towards the box, but is bundled over right on the edge of it by Gvardiol to win City a free-kick, very much in a shooting position.
14' SAVED!!! Walker wins City the first corner of the game and Mahrez's delivery is right on the money. Dias fires a glancing header towards the centre of the goal, but the effort is well held by Blaswich for Leipzig.
12' This is the third time Leipzig have been drawn against English opposition in the Champions League Round of 16. After winning both games against Spurs in 2019-20, the German side were beaten in both legs by Liverpool in the next season's campaign.
10' A ball forward from Klostermann is left alone by City players, and Andre Silva looks able to run into the clear. It's an intention high line from the visitors though, as they catch the RB striker offside.
8' Walker looks to slip Gundogan in behind and does so, but the City captain's cross for Haaland is headed away by Halstenberg.
7' These two sides met in the group stages of last season's Champions League, with a total of 12 goals being scored across the two matches. City won 6-3 at home, and lost 2-1 in Germany as the sides finished first and third respectively in Group A.
5' Walker jinks between two and looks to race up to the byline, but takes a heavy touch and the ball goes behind for a goal kick.
4' City have not named an unchanged starting line-up XI in all competitions this season, making 143 total changes to their XI. That's second only to West Ham's 180 amongst Premier League teams in all competitions.
2' De Bruyne attempts to play a throughball for Haaland running in behind, but it's too heavily hit and rolls into the gloves of Blaswich.
1' Haaland kicks off for the visitors, as City get us underway in eastern Germany!
The teams head out onto the pitch, and we're just moments away from kick-off in this round of 16 clash in Leipzig!
Erling Haaland has 32 goals in just 31 games in his debut season at Eastlands, and the big Norwegian has bagged five of them in the Champions League. He scored against his former club Borussia Dortmund in the group stage, and can he add another against German opposition tonight?
Andre Silva and Timo Werner have five goals between them in this season’s Champions League, and start up front together looking to breach a City defence who have only conceded two in the competition so far. Christopher Nkunku has three of his own too, but will start from the bench at the Red Bull Arena.
