Three points take Inter up to second in the Serie A table, but more importantly secure their spot in the 2023-24 Champions League. Atalanta are still three points adrift of fourth-placed Milan, but the Rossoneri have the head-to-head tiebreaker going their way. Juventus are now the team threatening to overhaul Milan at the end of the campaign.

Inter got off to the perfect start in this match as Lukaku's opener after 39 seconds was followed two minutes later by a good finish from Barella. Atalanta were initially stunned but slowly worked their way back into the game. Pasalic got a goal back before the break as the visitors pushed hard for an unlikely win. The second half was fairly even, but it was the hosts who scored next as Martinez tapped home into an empty net after good play from Lukaku and Brozovic. Onana turned the ball into his own net in the 92nd minute, but Inter were able to hold on for a 3-2 win.

Calhanoglu put the ball in the back of the net too for the hosts, but he was in an offside position. Atalanta slowly worked their way back into the half and got a deserved goal as Pasalic scored a rebound as Inter failed to clear a corner. Scalvini had a half-chance before the break but Inter still lead 2-1 at half-time.

Atalanta will view this as a must-win game as they are currently three points off the top four with two fixtures to go. After a small dip in form, Gian Piero Gasperini’s team returned to winning ways last time out as they beat Verona 3-1 at home. Rasmus Hojlund also scored his first club goal since March, which should give him more confidence heading into the match.

Inter have had a good week so far, winning the Coppa Italia final against Fiorentina on Wednesday. They could continue their celebrations today as Simone Inzaghi’s side need just one point against Atalanta to secure another season of Champions League football. No Serie A side has picked up more points in their last five games than Inter.
