The Spain international struck in the second half to overshadow his underwhelming Belgian team-mate

Marco Asensio was the hero for Real Madrid as his excellent strike secured a 1-0 win on home soil against Getafe.

Carlo Ancelotti fielded a weakened team for the clash at the Santiago Bernabeu, his eye on the upcoming Champions League semi-final second leg against Manchester City. Karim Benzema, Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo missed the starting XI, while Eden Hazard received a rare start.

It was a close affair against the relegation-threatened visitors. Hazard failed to show any spark in his first La Liga start in seven months, but luckily Asensio was on hand to fire in a beauty from outside the box - his ninth goal in La Liga this season - to seal the three points.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Thibaut Courtois (6/10):

Was rarely under pressure but was ready to pull off two strong saves in the second half.

    Lucas Vazquez (7/10):

Got forward a lot and made the simple but correct pass to Asensio to tee up the first goal.

    Eder Militao (7/10):

Another strong defensive display and pushed high up the field to support the attack.

    Nacho Fernandez (6/10):

Had plenty of time on the ball and made some good passes to help Madrid build from the back.

    Ferland Mendy (5/10):

A fairly quiet game before he was taken off at half-time and replaced by Toni Kroos.

    Dani Ceballos (5/10):

Had two ineffective shots before he went off 15 minutes into the second half.

    Aurelien Tchouameni (8/10):

Heavily involved with defensive and attacking actions. Got on the ball a lot and dug in with some strong tackles, including one that kick-started the move that ended with Vinicius Junior's disallowed goal.

    Eduardo Camavinga (7/10):

Pressed high up and made plenty of movement to find space and link up with the Madrid attack in the first half and then switched to left full-back for the second half.

    Attack

    Federico Valverde (6/10):

Made some sharp runs and good passes as he attempted to find a way through the cramped Getafe defence but was substituted in the 60th minute.

    Marco Asensio (8/10):

A lively presence in the front three, he had many attempts from distance before he opened the scoring by blasting in a lovely goal from outside the box.

    Eden Hazard (4/10):

A disappointing display from a winger clearly bereft of confidence and quality. Unable to threaten or connect with team-mates before he went off after an hour.

    Subs & Manager

    Toni Kroos (6/10):

Added some stability to Madrid's game when he came on for the second half.

    Vinicius Junior (7/10):

Provided an immediate spark with a nice run at the Getafe defence after replacing Hazard. Thought he had scored with a lovely finish but was offside.

    Luka Modric (7/10):

Helped change the game for Madrid with his experience and excellent passes in the final 30 minutes.

    Mariano Diaz (6/10):

Linked up well with his team-mates and set up Vinicius for a goal that was chalked off.

    Alvaro Odriozola (N/A):

A late introduction who did not have the time to impact the game.

    Carlo Ancelotti (7/10):

He made the smart decision to rest many key players ahead of Wednesday's Champions League clash but his changes added a lot to provide an extra threat against a stubborn Getafe defence.
