South Africa will be targeting nothing but a victory when they square off with a lowly-ranked side

Bafana Bafana are set to play host to the Leone Stars in an international friendly match at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.

Coach Hugo Broos' side will be under pressure to win this encounter against Sierra Leone, who are ranked 113th in the Fifa world rankings.

Currently placed 68th on the Fifa rankings, Bafana are winless in their last three matches under Broos and he will be eager to guide his side to a victory this weekend.

The history between Bafana and Leone Stars

Bafana will meet Sierra Leone for the fifth time across all competitions since South Africa was readmitted into international sport in 1992 after two-decade isolation imposed on the apartheid-state.

Surprisingly the Southern African giants have never tasted a win over the West African country since their first ever meeting which was in June 2008.

GOAL examines the four matches between the two nations, and asks whether Broos can secure a first ever victory.

  • Mohamed Kallon

    Bafana humiliated in first meeting

Leone Stars played host to Bafana at National Stadium in the 2010 World Cup/Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in June 2008 with the latter being the clear favourites to win the game.
Former AS Monaco striker Mohamed Kallon scored the only goal of the match as the unfancied hosts claimed a shocking 1-0 win over the 1996 African champions.

  • Thembinkosi Fanteni, Bafana Bafana, 2009

    Fanteni and Bafana wasteful

A week later, Bafana were seeking vengeance when they faced off with the Leone Stars at Lucas Moripe Stadium in another 2010 World Cup/Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
The hosts, who were under the guidance of  Brazilian tactician Joel Santana, dominated the game from start to finish.

However, Thembinkosi Fanteni and Surprise Moriri were guilty of missing easy goalscoring opportunities as the two teams drew 0-0.

  • Itumeleng Khune, South Africa

    Khune dazzles in Freetown

The third meeting between the two teams took place in Freetown with Sierra Leone hosting South Africa in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in October 2010.

A young Itumeleng Khune was in his element between the sticks for Bafana as he produced three wonder saves keeping at bay the three Bangura’s of Mohamed, Ibrahim and Mustapha as the two teams settled for a 0-0 draw.

  • Pitso Mosimane

    Pitso's charges left embarrassed

A Pitso Mosimane-South Africa side was held to a 0-0 draw by a stubborn Sierra Leone side in their last game of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign which was played at Mbombela Stadium.

Bafana players then enjoyed a dance session after the game thinking they had qualified for the finals. However, the players later discovered that the team had in fact failed to qualify as they had to win the game in order to secure their spot in the finals which were co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

  • Rushine De Reuck & Victor Letsoalo, Bafana Bafana, October 2021

    Fifth meeting

The Leone Stars have won one match, while three games ended in a draw from their previous four meetings against Bafana.

South Africa will now be searching for their first-ever win over the minnows.

Bafana should be confident of defeating their visitors who have lost each of their last three matches.
