T. Werner (54)
C. Archer (64)
Stamford Bridge
(FT 1 - 1)

That is all for tonight folks, thanks for joining us. Goodbye!
Chelsea were far from their best, but Tuchel has an incredible squad at his disposal, with the likes of Kepa, Chilwell, Loftus-Cheek, Saul, Hudson-Odoi and Werner all starting this evening. Villa's big-hitters were left at home, but both sides will take plenty of positives from this third-round encounter. While Chelsea waits for their next opponent to be drawn, Villa return to league duties where they face Manchester United at the weekend.
Chelsea's name is in the hat for the fourth round of the EFL Cup, thanks to their penalty shootout success. It looked to be all over when Young and Nakamba missed from the spot, but Chilwell's miss gave Villa a glimmer of hope. In the end, it wasn't enough, and successful spot-kicks from Lukaku, Mount, Barkley and James get the job done for Chelsea. Even with a weakened team, Villa gave Chelsea's superior second-string a real game, but they failed to build on Archer's equaliser inside the 90 minutes.
FULL-TIME - CHELSEA 1-1 ASTON VILLA (Chelsea win 4-3 on pens).
GOALLLL!! Game set and match for Chelsea as James curls his penalty into the top corner.
Buendia puts the pressure on as he scores. Chelsea must score next to win on pens!
OFF THE BAR! Chilwell clips the top of the crossbar and Villa get a lifeline in the shootout.
Konsa looked nervous but he kept his cool and he makes it 3-2 to the Blues.
Easy work from Barkley as he fires into the side netting. 3-1 Chelsea!
Not so Marvelous from Nakamba as Kepa keeps his low drive at bay!
No trouble for Mount as he smashes his effort down the middle. 2-1 Chelsea.
MISS - Young goes for power and he rattles the crossbar!
Lukaku stutters his run-up and fires home - 1-1.
El Ghazi sends Kepa the wrong way and it's advantage Villa!
Here we go then, El Ghazi will take the first penalty!
There's a bit of confusion during the coin toss for the penalty shootout. Young thinks he won it for Villa, but referee Graham Scott retakes it, and Chelsea get the decision and will shoot towards their own fans.
Kepa and Steer have been in good form tonight, and one of them could be the hero for their team in the next 15 minutes.
Now for the dreaded penalties. Tuchel and Smith will now get a few minutes to prepare their players for a shootout after a frantic second-half at Stamford Bridge. Werner thought he had done enough with his header, only to see Archer level matters after the hour mark.
R. James
Yellow Card
90' + 2' James is carded for a poor challenge near the halfway line.
90' + 1' Now is a good time to remind you that we are going straight to penalties if nobody can score in the next four minutes.
90' Philogene-Bidace makes his way back onto the field as five minutes of stoppage time are signalled at Stamford Bridge.
88' Barkley's poorly-timed challenge brings down Philogene-Bidace, and the Villa midfielder signals he needs treatment.
A. Young
Yellow Card
Aston Villa
86' A poor challenge from Young sees his name enter the referee's book.
86' TACKLE!! Hause and Lukaku go head-to-head inside the Villa box, and the former goes to ground, claiming that he was pushed. The replays show Hause timed his tackle to perfection, and if he gets that wrong, he is on his way to the stands, and Chelsea have a penalty.
84' False alarm for Chelsea as Werner appears ready to continue!
83' Chelsea have an injury to worry about as Werner goes down with what looks like a knee injury. The referee stops the game, and the physios will now try and get to work.
81' BLOCK! Barkley tries his luck on the edge of the box, but his powerful shot is blocked by Tuanzebe.
78' Chelsea's subs suggest that Werner will move out wide, to allow Lukaku to lead through the middle. Barkley will slot into midfield to add some energy to the home attack.
E. Konsa
M. Cash
Aston Villa
77' Cash makes way for Villa, with Konsa on in his place.
R. Lukaku
76' Tuchel decides to end Saul's night early, with Lukaku now on to lead the line.
R. Barkley
H. Ziyech
76' Chelsea's second change of the night sees Barkley replace Ziyech.
73' It appears that Lukaku is being told to get ready! 20 minutes or so for him to make an impact!
71' OVER! Villa waste a glorious chance to move into the lead as Buendia smashes Cash's cross over the crossbar.
69' Villa are full of confidence after that goal, and nearly all of Smith's men are flying forward, and they are unsettling Chelsea, who in fairness look a little stunned.
66' CHANCE! El Ghazi wastes a glorious chance to put Villa in front as he blasts a shot straight at Kepa from inside the box.
C. Archer
Aston Villa
65' GOAAAALLLL - CHELSEA 1-1 ASTON VILLA - What a moment for Archer as he heads home Cash's cross to draw Villa level. For the first time in this second half, Chelsea fell asleep at the back, and they were punished as Archer headed into the roof of the net.
M. Cash
Aston Villa
64' Archer's header was superb, but Cash's cross was equally as good, with the right-back curling his pass around both Chelsea centre-backs.
J. Philogene-Bidace
B. Traoré
Aston Villa
64' Traore's night is over as Philogene-Bidace enters the field of play.
60' Tuchel must be delighted to see Werner get a goal tonight. He's not had it easy in England so far, but the Blues coach will be hoping to get the best out of the former RB Leipzig man so he can compete with Lukaku up front.
57' Archer’s treble on his Aston Villa debut in the second round against Barrow was the first by a Villa player in the League Cup since August 2015. He's now added to his tally for the season, and he has led the line brilliantly for Smith's men.
57' SAVE! Steer flies across his goal to keep Ziyech at bay, and that's the second time he has denied Chelsea's winger. Ziyech's strike was sailing into the bottom corner, but Steer did incredibly well to push the ball away from trouble.
56' WIDE! Werner is in the mood now, but his latest shot fires past the far post.
R. James
54' Werner was quick to thank James for his goal, and it does not come as a surprise. The England fullback put that chance on a plate for his team-mate.
T. Werner
54' GOAAALLLL - CHELSEA 1-0 ASTON VILLA - Werner fires the Blues into the lead, and he finally gets something to smile about this evening. The Germany international has had minimal service, but the minute he does, he punishes the Villa defence. James was given time to pick his pass, and his floated cross was headed home by Werner.
52' When these sides last met, Saul was replaced at half-time after struggling to adjust to the pace of the English game. He seems more at home this evening, and Villa are struggling to close him down.
50' SAVE! Hudson-Odoi forces a save out of Steer, but his shot from the edge of the box lacks power, and the Villa keeper deals with the situation with ease.
46' We are back underway at Stamford Bridge!
M. Mount
N. Kanté
46' Tuchel takes Kante off at half-time as the Frenchman continues to work his way back to full fitness, with Mount coming on in his place.
Tuchel will not want to turn to his bench just yet, but with Barkley, Lukaku, Mount and Havertz all available, it would be no problem if he did. Villa's most experienced player on the bench is Konsa, so it's not exactly an ideal situation for Villa.
Neither side found a way through in the opening 45 minutes, but both sides showed plenty of commitment and attacking flair. The first 25 minutes were slow, but the game came to life towards the end. Ziyech had Chelsea's best chance, but Steer was on hand to keep him at bay. Archer, El Ghazi and Traore all had chances at the death for Villa, but Kepa and James got in the way to keep the game at 0-0.
45' SAVE! Traore is the latest player to try his luck, but Kepa gets down to his left to deny the Villa winger.
45' Three minutes stoppage time to come...
44' OFF THE LINE!! Villa go agonisingly close to opening the scoring as they see two attempts blocked at the end of the first half. Archer managed to sneak in behind the Blues defence, but his shot was saved by Kepa. However, the follow-up fell to El Ghazi, who steered his effort towards goal, only to see James race back in time to clear his strike off the line.
C. Chukwuemeka
M. Sanson
Aston Villa
43' Sanson makes his way down the tunnel, with Chukwuemeka his replacement.
42' Villa have an injury to worry about as Sanson goes down injured, and he looks to be suggesting that is the end of his night.
41' BLOCK! Nakamba gets in the way of a Werner shot to ensure the scoreline remains 0-0.
40' The history books suggest Chelsea should be in for a good night this evening. The Blues have progressed from each of their last ten third round ties in the EFL Cup since a 4-3 defeat to Newcastle back in 2010-11.
37' SAVE! Ziyech has been a passenger for the first 30 minutes, but he bursts into life as he forces Steer into a save. The Chelsea winger received the ball in the box and did well to turn sharply before going for goal. Steer reacted quickly and kept him at bay, and that is the highlight of the match so far.
33' Villa waste the free-kick they won after Sarr's clumsy challenge, and Traore needed treatment for an upper-body injury after an awkward landing. He seems happy to return to the pitch, but he is not moving comfortably.
M. Sarr
Yellow Card
31' Sarr goes straight through the back of Traore and becomes the first player to be carded.
29' CLOSE! El Ghazi wins a corner for Villa, but it was nearly so much more than that. A low cross had to be dealt with by the home defence, and Chilwell was inches away from scoring an own-goal after trying to divert the cross.
27' Tuchel does have Lukaku on his bench, just in case he needs to turn to him, and he may need to if Werner fails to get involved. The German has barely kicked a ball in anger so far!
24' The battle between Chilwell and Cash is hotting up, with the latter getting the better of their duels of late.
22' WIDE! Chelsea pile on the pressure, and Kante picks out Saul at the back post with a looping cross. The former Atletico Madrid man got to the ball before Cash, but his header was well wide in the end.
18' We are nearly 20 minutes in, and neither keeper has had much to do, Chelsea are certainly playing on the front foot, but the ten changes have taken their toll on their style of play at present.
16' Traore gets a huge round of applause from the Villa fans as he dribbles out of a tricky situation before making his way down the touchline, only to win a free-kick after a poor challenge from Sarr.
13' Villa are struggling to get hold of the ball in midfield, and both Nakamba and Sanson need to do more if they are to start to get a foothold in this match.
10' Chelsea are starting to get a little more joy when on the ball, and the majority of their play has come down the left-hand side. Sadly for the Blues, Chilwell has shown signs of rustiness, and both his recent crosses have been wayward.
7' Chelsea win the first corner of the match, but Tuchel's side fail to pose any problems for the visitors after a poor delivery, and it remains goalless.
5' Interesting to see Smith leave Ings and Watkins out of his team for this evening, with the visitors' bench lacking experience.
3' It has been a slow start so far in west London, with Chelsea trying to build attacks from the back, but they have yet to make much progress thanks to Villa's midfield.
1' We are underway!
The two teams make their way onto the pitch at Stamford Bridge, and kick-off is moments away.
This fixture will be the fifth League Cup tie between Chelsea and Aston Villa, and the first since 2006-07 when the sides met in the fourth round. Chelsea have progressed from three of the previous four, with Aston Villa’s only triumph coming back in 2003-04 in the quarter-finals.
Only Kepa keeps his place from the Chelsea side that beat Tottenham 3-0 at the weekend. Kante captains the Blues while Sarr makes his debut. Smith makes nine changes from the Villa side that beat Everton 3-0, with Cash and Tuanzebe retaining their spots. 19-year-old Archer leads the line in attack.
SUBS: Aaron Ramsey, Jaden Philogene-Bidace, Ezri Konsa Ngoyo, Carney Chukwuemeka, Lamare Bogarde, Viljami Sinisalo, Caleb Chukwuemeka.
ASTON VILLA (4-2-3-1): Jed Steer, Matty Cash, Axel Tuanzebe, Kortney Hause, Ashley Young; Marvelous Nakamba, Morgan Sanson; Bertrand Traore, Emiliano Buendia, Anwar El Ghazi; Cameron Archer.
SUBS: Romelu Lukaku, Mason Mount, Marcus Bettinelli, Ross Barkley, Kai Havertz, Thiago Silva, Xavier Mbuyamba.
CHELSEA (4-3-3): Kepa Arrizabalaga; Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah, Malang Sarr, Ben Chilwell' Ruben Loftus-Cheek, N'Golo Kante, Saul Niguez; Callum Hudson-Odoi, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech.
During Chelsea's unbeaten run, they beat Aston Villa 3-0 at Stamford Bridge earlier this month. While the scoreline suggests it was a routine win, Dean Smith's men pushed them all the way, and they will feel they can cause the home side problems at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea will look to transfer their Premier League form into the EFL Cup as they play their first fixture in the competition. The Blues are unbeaten under Thomas Tuchel in the league, while Aston Villa have already played Barrow in the previous round, winning 6-0 back in August.
Good evening and welcome to tonight's coverage of the EFL Cup clash between Chelsea and Aston Villa.
