Keita, Firmino, Salah? The Liverpool stars who could leave to help summer rebuild

Oxlade-Chamberlain’s six-year stay on Merseyside is set to end this summer when his contract expires. 

The former England international has failed to hold down a regular starting spot in recent years, but has offered a useful squad option for Klopp, playing on the wing or in midfield. 

But at 29 - he will turn 30 in August - Oxlade-Chamberlain’s time at Anfield is up. He will not be offered a new deal, and has already been linked with a move to various Premier League clubs, including West Ham and Southampton.

Another player out of contract at the end of this season, Keita has found himself back in favour of late, starting each of the Reds’ last three matches and helping improve a midfield that had struggled badly beforehand.

The Guinea international’s injury record, though, means any optimism surrounding his form must be tempered, and the fact there has been no breakthrough in talks over a new deal does not bode well. A number of German clubs have expressed interest in signing the 27-year-old.

If Klopp gets his way, Firmino will be staying around. The Brazilian will be a free agent in June, but his manager is eager for him to extend his contract for at least another year, believing he still has an important role to play.

As yet, though, there has been no resolution. Firmino is understood to be open to the idea of remaining on Merseyside, but is expected to receive lucrative offers from elsewhere, and the January arrival of Cody Gakpo hardly bodes well for his future prospects.

The last of Liverpool’s out-of-contract quartet, Milner had been expected to leave the club last summer, only to sign a one-year extension in June. 

A repeat this time around cannot be ruled out - Klopp hinted as much recently - but at 37, the vice-captain certainly does not represent the long-term, and with the Reds set to bring in at least two senior midfielders, and probably more, the time might be right for Milner to move on. 

If he does, he has more than played his part in a wonderful era on Merseyside.

Liverpool have, traditionally, done well when selling off fringe players in recent seasons, with the likes of Neco Williams, Rhian Brewster, Dominic Solanke and Harry Wilson, among others, bringing in decent fees which could be reinvested.

Right now, though, they have fewer obvious assets in that regard, but back-up goalkeeper Kelleher could be one. The 24-year-old has never let the Reds down when called upon, but would be right to believe he is ready to play regular first-team football now, and would improve many Premier League clubs.

A summer deal could be in everyone’s best interests.

Of all Liverpool’s struggles this season, those of Fabinho have been perhaps the most baffling. 

The Brazilian, at his best, is one of the finest holding midfielders in world football, but his form has nosedived since the summer, to the point that 18-year-old Stefan Bajcetic has been selected ahead of him of late. 

Klopp is likely to keep faith with the 29-year-old, who can also operate as a centre-back if needed, but he’ll want to see signs of improvement soon, and a big offer from elsewhere could give him a decision to make.

Yet again, it looked like Nat Phillips would be leaving Liverpool before the transfer window closed. And yet again, no move materialised, in part due to the injury suffered by Ibrahima Konate.

The centre-back has been regularly linked with a transfer away from Anfield in recent years, but for one reason or another has always ended up sticking around. Phillips, in fairness, never lets Klopp down, and is a popular and respected member of the Reds’ squad, but he surely needs to start playing football now. 

Nobody at Liverpool would begrudge him that.

He was Klopp’s first signing as Liverpool manager, but is this the end of the road for the former Cameroon international?

There have been growing whispers from within the club that Matip may move on this summer. Virgil van Dijk and Konate look to be the Reds’ preferred centre-back pairing going forward, while Joe Gomez signed a long-term contract last summer and provides a homegrown squad option.

Matip will enter the final year of his deal in the summer, and if a suitable offer was received for the 31-year-old, it would be hard to refuse.

Likelihood of leaving? 6/10

He couldn’t, could he? Having signed a new three-year contract last summer, Salah has been tentatively linked with a move away this summer, with Paris Saint-Germain among those interested.

His form for Liverpool this season has been patchy, but it would still be a huge surprise if the Reds looked to sell. He is still, after all, the club’s talisman and top scorer, and having gone to such lengths to keep him, why would they now look to move him on now?

Likelihood of leaving? 2/10

Another who falls into the category of a ‘potential sell-able asset’, Jones only signed a new contract in November, but has previously attracted interest from the likes of Aston Villa and Leeds, among others.

At 22, the academy prospect is still seen as a long-term option by Klopp, and his homegrown status should not be underestimated. It looks unlikely that he would be sold, then, but that could depend on what kind of offer is put on the table.

Elsewhere, third-choice goalkeeper Adrian will almost certainly leave on a free transfer, while the likes of Rhys Williams, Sepp van den Berg, Billy Koumetio, Leighton Clarkson, Jarell Quansah and Tyler Morton could all have offers, either permanent or loan. Van den Berg and Clarkson look the likeliest candidates to leave permanently.

Youngsters such as Bobby Clark, Luke Chambers and Ben Doak, all of whom have been around the first-team this season, may have loan options, as might Kaide Gordon, who has missed nearly a year with a pelvic injury, and prolific academy strikers Oakley Cannonier and Layton Stewart.
