Coach Francis Kimanzi had summoned five new signings for this match and they paid back the favour with brilliant display

Mathare United came from a goal down to squeeze a 2-1 win against hosts Vihiga United at Bukhungu Stadium on Sunday.

Clifford Alwanga hit a brace for the Francis Kimanzi coached side, who found themselves trailing after Dennis Wafula had given the newly promoted side the lead early in the first half.

But Alwanga, who joined the ‘Slum Boys’ from Tusker in the January transfer window, announced his arrival with two goals in the second half to guide the team to maximum points.

Kimanzi had summoned five new signings for this match and they paid back the favour with some brilliant display and three vital points at the end of the day.

While Alwanga was terrorizing Vihiga United defence, at the back, keeper Robert Mboya also pulled some important saves to thwart constant attacks by a fearless Vihiga United side.

Mboya’s reflexes kept at bay a Christopher Masinza’s close-range shot on the near post in the 77th minute as Vihiga pushed the ‘Slum Boys’ back into their safe zone late into the match.

Samuel Olwande set the pace of the game with an early attack when he found John Mwangi with a low cross just two minutes into the game, but the latter's effort was easily picked up Barnabas Tiema.

Captain George Owino was called to action to clear the danger from Vihiga’s first corner as the home side responded to Mathare’s attack in the fourth minute.

Vihiga again tested Mathare United with a 12th minute shot delivered by Amos Kigadi, but Mboya was up to the task to clear the danger.

Pressure, however, paid off in the 24th minute when Wafula took full advantage of Mathare United defensive lapse to fire home the opener.

Alwanga, however, cancelled out Vihiga’s lead just three minutes after the resumption when he fired home past Tiema. Vihiga United coach made a substitution blunder when he pulled out midfield machine Charles Okwemba for Victor Ayugi.

With a weak midfield, Mathare United cut on Vihiga United’s ball supply upfront as they took control of the game. Alwanga found space to power home his second goal of the match in the 79th minute to help Mathare United move fifth on the log.
