Commentary

It's Athletic who'll be in the draw for the last eight of the Copa del Rey, then, while Barca have been dumped out of two cups in just over a week. Scraping into the Champions League next season, either through LaLiga or the Europa League, has to be their primary focus now. That's all for now. Goodbye!
Athletic are worthy winners of this match. The Basques had 19 shots to Barca's seven, and worried Barca with their workrate all game. Muniain and the Williams brothers Inaki and Nico were particularly impressive. Deep down, Barca will be disappointed with their performance. Their superior finishing almost bailed them out of trouble, but eventually their luck run out.
Athletic have finally seen off Barca, edging an exhausting Copa del Rey round of 16 tie! Twice Athletic took the lead in normal time through Muniain and Martinez. Although they were the better side all game, Torres and Pedri's clinical finishing forced the game to extra-time. Alba's clumsy handball handed Athletic one last chance though, and Muniain took it from the penalty spot to finish Xavi's men off.
120' + 2' FULL-TIME: ATHLETIC BILBAO 3-2 BARCELONA (AET)
120' + 1' The Athletic fans burst into song once more as Braithwaite shoves over Muniain. Athletic take the free-kick and Barca defend it, but there's no time for them to do anything else. That's it!
Muniain
Yellow Card
Athletic Club
120' Athletic are doing whatever it takes at this point. Muniain's booked for blatantly holding back Braithwaiite as he looks to reach a pass.
120' Barca venture forwards once more but Agirrezabala latches onto Torres' loose ball.
Williams
Yellow Card
Athletic Club
119' Inaki Williams picks up a yellow card for handball after he fails to keep the ball in play and Barca get a goal-kick.
118' Athletic keep the ball near the corner flag, successfully slowing the game down by winning another free-kick. They're almost there.
Peru Nolaskoain
Mikel Vesga
Athletic Club
117' Athletic make a change before taking the corner. Vesga off. Nolaskoain on.
115' Agirrezabala confidently claims Frenkie de Jong's cross in from the left. Up the other end, Inaki Williams reaches the byline and gets a corner out of Busquets. He raises his arms to motivate the home fans, who are still noisy but a bit nervous now too.
113' Athletic are still posing a threat. Berenguer inspires a save from Ter Stegen at his near post, but he's offside anyway.
111' Busquets gets a free-kick as he's roughed up by Inaki Williams. Barca force a corner off Lekue but achieve nothing with it. For the first time in this match, Athletic are wisely concentrating on defending.
Oier Zarraga
Nico Williams
Athletic Club
110' Athletic substitution. Nico Williams gets a deserved rest. He's tormented Barca all game with his pace. Zarraga, a more central midfielder, comes on.
109' Araujo is the next Barca player to be judged offside from an Alves throughball. Barca are piling players forward now.
107' Barca think they've equalised for the third time as Torres latches onto Alves' throughball to slot past Agirrezabala. Luckily for Athletic, the offside flag goes up and they can breathe again.
Lekue
De Marcos
Athletic Club
105' Athletic also bring on fresh legs. De Marcos heads off. Lekue replaces him at right-back.
105' We're underway for the final period of extra-time! Can Athletic hang on or are there more surprises ahead?
Athletic will be mightily relieved to have the lead again. It's no less than they deserve too. Although the penalty came as a result of Alba's stupidity, Muniain's penalty, when it came, was flawless.
105' + 3' HALF-TIME IN EXTRA-TIME: ATHLETIC BILBAO 3-2 BARCELONA
M. Braithwaite
Pedri
Barcelona
105' + 3' We're almost at half-time of extra-time. Before that, Barca will immediately respond to going behind again. Braithwaite is on for Pedri.
Muniain
Penalty Goal
Athletic Club
105' + 1' GOAL! ATHLETIC BILBAO 3-2 BARCELONA! Muniain keeps his cool and slots his penalty down the middle, sending Ter Stegen the wrong way to grab his second goal of the game. Now Athletic have a third advantage to defend!
Jordi Alba
Yellow Card
Barcelona
105' Alba's booked for blocking Nico Williams' cross with his hand. It was a foolish decision to make. Can Athletic regain the lead once more?
105' PENALTY FOR ATHLETIC! After dealing with the elbow situation, the referee finally heads off to the monitor to review the handball incident. He takes a quick look and it's as clear as day. Alba handed the ball, and it's a penalty!
De Marcos

Athletic Club

F. de Jong
Yellow Card

104' Athletic think they should have a penalty for handball as Alba appears to have blocked Nico Williams' cross with his arm! Play continues for the time being while VAR takes a look...
103' Athletic need to be careful. Barca fling a cross into the box from the left and the hosts fluff their defensive header. Torres takes control of the ball and lays off to Dest who blasts a low shot into the arms of Agirrezabala.
101' Nico Williams' cross from the right is cleared by Barca's veteran right-back Alves. He's 38 years old and he's still on the pitch after 100 minutes. Remarkable.
99' Pedri wins a free-kick down Barca's right as he's fouled by Vesga.
Pedri
Yellow Card
Barcelona
97' Pedri unfairly brings down Muniain. The Barca midfielder is booked for the indiscretion.
96' To their credit Athletic are not feeling sorry for themselves. They still believe they can put this game to bed. Inaki Williams fires high and wide to the right from outside the box.
S. Dest
Ansu Fati
Barcelona
96' Fati trudges off and goes straight down the tunnel. The American full-back Dest comes on for Barca.
95' It looks like Fati is heading off. One can only assume that he's injured. He's only been on the pitch for just over half an hour.
93' Busquets catches the foot of Berenguer in midfield and Athletic get a free-kick. Muniain sends it towards the byline where Martinez is lurking, but the centre-back can't keep the ball in play for his team.
92' Off we go again then for 30 more minutes! Can Athletic finally see the win out, or will Barca pull off an audacious smash and grab?
Balenziaga
Yuri
Athletic Club
90' Athletic make a change before the restart. Balenziaga replaces Berchiche at left-back.
Athletic will be very frustrated that this game has gone to extra-time. The hosts have been the better side all game, working extremely hard to take the lead twice. Barca have equalised twice with their only two shots on target.
90' + 4' END OF 90 MINUTES: ATHLETIC BILBAO 2-2 BARCELONA
Dani Alves
Assist
Barcelona
90' + 3' That was some improvisation by Alves, who caught Athletic's defence by surprise. Barca arguably don't deserve it, but to extra-time we go!
Pedri
Goal
Barcelona
90' + 3' GOAL! ATHLETIC BILBAO 2-2 BARCELONA! Well, well! Pedri has saved Barca's skin! Xavi's men pile the pressure on and Alves sends a cross back into the centre with an overhead kick. Pedri arrives on the scene and blasts the ball past Agirrezabala from the edge of the box. There was nothing the keeper could do to keep it out.
90' + 2' Barca haven't had a shot on target in this second half. They've got bags of potential, but at the moment they are a shadow of the side they used to be.
90' There'll be four more minutes of this, but Barca don't look like mounting a comeback. Athletic use their pace to force another corner down their right which comes to nothing.
88' Athletic have the ball in the net again through Berenguer, but this time it is ruled out for offside. The striker was just a touch ahead of Nico Williams' cross.
87' There was a quick VAR check before the goal was given as a few Athletic players were offside when Muniain's free-kick came in. Berenguer and Martinez were onside though so the goal stands! Can Barca get out of this one now?
Íñigo Martínez
Goal
Athletic Club
86' GOAL! ATHLETIC BILBAO 2-1 BARCELONA! Muniain swings in the free-kick from the left. Berenguer beats Ter Stegen to the ball at the far post and the keeper's block rebounds to Martinez, who clumsily bundles it past Pique and over the line!
84' Athletic hit the crossbar! Inaki Williams uses his strength to barge his way onto the ball down the right and spots Ter Stegen off his line. The striker goes for goal and sees his speculative effort crash off the top of the woodwork and back into play. Athletic soon win a free-kick down their left as Gonzalez impedes Berchiche.
82' Athletic keep on coming. Berchiche cuts the ball back to the edge of the box from the left. Dani Garcia sweeps it high over the crossbar.
81' Suddenly Athletic find themselves two-on-two! From that situation they manage to earn a free-kick near the corner flag. They turn it into a corner which Barca clear.
80' Barca go hunting on the counter-attack again. Athletic rush back into position, so the visitors slow things down. Fati's dribble is cut out and the ball rebounds to Frenkie de Jong. His low shot from the left of the box is blocked.
Álex Berenguer
Raúl García
Athletic Club
79' Here's that Athletic change. Raul Garcia, who's not played the biggest part in this game, heads off. On comes Berenguer.
79' Muniain's delivery isn't the best and Barca clear easily. Athletic are about to make a substitution.
78' Barca's attack doesn't work out and they soon give a free-kick away on Muniain. Athletic decide to send players forward for it.
77' Barca keep possession for a while, biding their time. Gonzalez is now stationed on the right for them, Fati on the left. Torres is playing through the middle.
Piqué
Yellow Card
Barcelona
76' Pique's booked for a poor tackle on Muniain. He can have no complaints.
75' The game is starting to open up again after a quiet start to the half. Martinez makes a very well-timed tackle to stop Torres from running through on goal.
73' Vesga shoots from the edge of the box and a Barca defender successfully gets in the way of it. Marcelino is exasperated to see Muniain penalised for a high foot on Fati.
72' Barca now have a free-kick from a central position just outside the D. Alba sweeps it into Athletic's defensive wall before Fati fires over from range.
71' Athletic make a mess of the corner as Nico Williams' shot from outside the box is blocked. Now Barca can break! Vivian steams into the back of Torres before he can burst into the penalty area.
70' Athletic continue to look the more likely team to grab a second goal here. The hosts force a corner down their right. Nico Williams takes it short.
68' Inaki and Nico Williams combine well again to threaten Barca, as Inaki lays off to find Nico running into the box. Nico's ruled offside, to his confusion. On second viewing, it does look to be an incorrect decision.
67' Pedri's corner doesn't worry Athletic as the referee blows for a free-kick against Gonzalez. The Barca man had climbed over the back of Dani Garcia while going for the ball.
66' Torres goes for a carbon copy of his goal in the first half. This time his pop at goal takes a deflection and goes out for a Barca corner.
64' Barca are proving tougher for Athletic to trouble so far in this second half, but they're still not creating much themselves. Inaki Williams is penalised for shouldering Pique off the ball.
62' Athletic enjoy their first chance for a while. It's created by the brothers Williams, as Nico successfully finds Inaki in the box. Inaki fires wide with a first-time volley.
Ansu Fati
Ferran Jutglà
Barcelona
61' Jutgla also makes way after an understated hour on the pitch. Fati is his replacement.
F. de Jong
Gavi
Barcelona
61' Here are those Barca changes. Gavi makes way first for Frenkie de Jong.
59' Barca are preparing more substitutions. Ter Stegen catches Berchiche's high cross from the left.
57' Not much is happening at the moment but the Athletic fans are having fun, waving their scarves. There's a great atmosphere in San Mames Stadium.
55' Athletic get caught upfield and Barca counter. Torres holds his run to stay offside as he rushes into the box. Dani Garcia gets back in time to stop hm from shooting.
53' Inaki Williams gets involved in the game straight away, helping to craft a shot for his younger brother Nico that Ter Stegen stops at his near post. Muniain slides the substitute in down Athletic's left seconds later, but he is offside.
Williams
Oihan Sancet
Athletic Club
52' Inaki Williams replaces the stricken Sancet. The good news for Athletic is that Sancet is able to leave the pitch unaided.
50' Sancet has gone down again off the ball. The problem seems to be with his knee. He jarred it when landing with a straight leg after Pique's tackle. It looks like he'll be unable to continue.
48' Sancet lands awkwardly from a challenge and requires treatment. Marcelino shows his displeasure down on the touchline. Thankfully the Athletic forward is OK.
47' The teams are back on the pitch for the second half. Athletic get things going again.
Nico González
A. Ezzalzouli
Barcelona
46' Barca make a change at half-time. The quiet Ezzalzouli gets hooked. Gonzalez replaces him.
Athletic had 10 shots to Barca's one in the first half and might consider themselves unlucky not to be leading. Of course, goals are the only shots that really count, but Barca have been muted apart from Torres' strike. Jutgla has had just nine touches of the ball. Ter Stegen has kept them in the game with his fine saves from Nico Williams and Raul Garcia. More to come!
It's all square so far in what has been a feisty, sometimes frenetic game. Athletic took the lead early on through Muniain's lovely curled strike, only for Barca to cancel it out thanks to a similar beauty of a goal from Torres. Athletic have mostly been on top, but it isn't being reflected in the scoreline.
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: ATHLETIC BILBAO 1-1 BARCELONA
45' + 1' Martinez heads harmlessly over from Athletic's latest corner. Barca will be glad to go in level at the break.
45' Barca are hanging on before half-time. The corner comes in. Dani Garcia flicks it on and Ter Stegen gets down low to push Raul Garcia's header off the line. Athletic have another corner which they win the first header from. The hosts get a third corner. There'll be two added minutes at the end of this half.
44' Barca are almost the architects of their own downfall! They play a pass straight to Athletic and the hosts pounce, playing three quick passes to present Sancet with a shot from the centre of the box. It's heroically blocked and bounces out for an Athletic corner.
42' Everyone eventually gets to their feet. Pique and Vesga are the players moving most gingerly after that incident. Something to keep an eye on.
41' Muniain leaves the corner for Berchiche who delivers an outswinger. Barca clear it, but play's stopped due to a mass tangle of players in the box.
40' Berchiche's cross from the left is blocked by Torres. Athletic win a corner down their left, their first of the game.
38' De Marcos shepherds the ball out for a throw-in and is nudged over by Ezzalzouli. It's a minor offence.
36' Athletic want a free-kick as Sancet dribbles towards the corner flag but is taken out by Araujo. They don't get it.
34' Muniain darts onto Berchiche's throughball from deep, but the offside flag goes up. He wags his finger playfully at the officials.
32' Athletic are charging at Barca whenever they get the chance, trying to put them off their slow passing game. It almost pays off again as Nico Williams forces Ter Stegen into a save from the right of the box.
31' Barca take the free-kick short before sending it forward at the second opportunity. Athletic head it away.
Dani García
Yellow Card
Athletic Club
30' Dani Garcia picks up the game's first yellow card for tripping Torres as he breezed past him.
28' Nico Williams has Alba's number so far! The Barca full-back stays deep as the Athletic winger bombs towards him, only to let him past anyway! Williams flings another cross in and Muniain heads off-target from close range.
26' Jutgla, who's playing centrally, nods over the crossbar from Torres' cross from the right. It's a decent chance.
24' Jutgla strays offside again as Ezzalzouli tries to find him. Up the other end, Nico Williams causes Alba problems again with an early cross. It's blocked by a Barca defender and rebounds to De Marcos whose effort sails high and wide of the left-hand post.
22' Busquets is unhappy as Dani Garcia clatters into him in midfield. The referee decides a free-kick is sufficient punishment.
Sergio Busquets
Assist
Barcelona
20' Busquets' pass was nothing flashy, but it came at the end of a little spell of Barca tiki-taka down the left. That only made Torres' eventual strike even more lovely.
Ferran Torres
Goal
Barcelona
20' GOAL! ATHLETIC BILBAO 1-1 BARCELONA! What a goal by Torres! The former Manchester City man receives a pass from Busquets to the left of the box, takes a touch past his defender and finds the top right corner with ease. It's a beautiful strike, clean and true.
18' Muniain, still on a high from his opening goal, gets a rush of blood to the head and blazes over from distance.
17' Agirrezabala makes his first save of the game as Athletic get a backpass wrong and Gavi slips on the end of it to shoot. It's at a tight angle from the near post, so the Athletic goalkeeper isn't tested too much.
16' Barca are beginning to get into their groove. They pop the ball around for a while before Athletic win possession and try to counter. Pique is well-placed to cut out a high ball for Raul Garcia.
14' Athletic handle the corner well. They've started the game in fine form so far.
13' The free-kick's pumped into Barca's box but the visitors manage to get it away and counter down their right. Muniain's tackle can't prevent Barca from earning a corner.
12' Sancet beats Gavi to a loose ball and gets caught by the Barca midfielder. Gavi pats his opponent on the shoulder in apology as Athletic are awarded a free-kick.
10' Muniain steams into the back of Gavi and gives away a foul. Barca take it quickly and try to work the ball down their right. Athletic eventually manage to clear from near their own corner flag.
8' Barca haven't really settled into the game yet. They're being troubled by Athletic's athleticism and direct running down the flanks.
6' Barca look to fight back right away as Jutgla's caught offside from Alba's throughball. Up the other end, Athletic get close to Barca's corner flag only for Berchiche to be penalised for an overeager challenge on Busquets.
4' Athletic have avoided defeat in their last 10 matches when scoring the opening goal in the Copa Del Rey dating back to December 2016 against Racing Santander. Barca have a job on their hands already.
Nico Williams
Assist
Athletic Club
2' Barca's defensive line was typically high there and Nico Williams exploited it to the maximum. He had Alba beaten for pace completely.
Muniain
Goal
Athletic Club
2' GOAL! ATHLETIC BILBAO 1-0 BARCELONA! Athletic start the game intensely and score almost straight away! Nico Williams darts onto a throughball down the right and beats Alba for pace to cross low into the box. It's beyond Raul Garcia, but their captain Muniain is there to curl a delightful shot back across goal into the far top corner.
1' The visitors Barca get this game underway!
The two teams are out on the pitch in Bilbao. Athletic are in their preferred red, white and black home kit. Barca are wearing their greyish away kit.
Barca make fewer changes, opting to make only three from their 3-2 defeat to Madrid in the Supercopa semi-finals. Out go Luuk de Jong, Frenkie de Jong and Ousmane Dembele, who isn't in the squad at all. Youngsters Ezzalzouli and Jutgla flank Torres up front.
There are six changes to Athletic from the Supercopa final. 21-year-old Agirrezabala gets a chance in goal instead of Simon, while Raul Garcia is preferred up front to Inaki Williams. Williams starts on the bench.

Marcelino's Athletic will be looking to get over their disappointment of losing the Supercopa de Espana final 2-1 to Real Madrid, who eliminated Xavi's Barca at the semi-final stage. With both teams in the hunt for European places at the end of the season, this should be a cracking game.
On paper, this top-flight clash between Athletic and Barca is one of the most mouthwatering ties of this round of this season's Copa del Rey. Both sides made it to this stage by dispatching lower league opposition. This game will be a more serious test for them.
