After Egypt registered a 2-1 extra-time win over Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals, GOAL rates how their players performed in Yaounde.
The 33-year-old Zamalek goalkeeper came in to replace Al Ahly’s Mohammed El Shenawy and he did not disappoint as he made three great saves to deny Sofiane Boufal from close range.
The 28-year-old was in good form especially in the first half when Morocco controlled the game, he twice cleared the ball off the line to keep Egypt in the game, and despite being booked for a clumsy challenge, he was a reliable defender.
In the absence of Zamalek’s Mahmoud Hamdi El Wensh, the 22-year-old produced another good display, putting his body on the line to block goal-bound efforts.
The 31-year-old, who features for Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad combined well with his back four to keep Morocco attackers at bay but he was replaced by Trezeguet.
The Zamalek player missed the last two group matches but returned in the game against Ivory Coast. He was calm with the ball, overlapped when the opportunity came by and he almost scored after his glancing header went inches wide.
The Al Ahly player replaced Hamdi Fathi in the starting XI but was at fault for conceding the penalty after bringing down the advancing Achraf Hakimi inside the box and it gave Morocco the chance to take the lead.
Another solid display from the Arsenal player, who has so far featured in all matches at the Afcon. He initiated the move that resulted in a corner from which Salah scored to put Egypt level.
He was very slow to release the ball when in possession and on two occasions, he almost gifted Morocco but he was saved by keeper Abou Gabal, who made great saves.
After a slow start in the 33rd edition of the competition, Salah was in great form, putting the Pharaohs level before setting up Trezeguet for the winner in extra time.
The 22-year-old, who plays for Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart on loan from Wolfsburg, was not at his level best, missing a clear chance that could have sealed the game in favour of Egypt in regular time before he was substituted.
The Galatasaray player did not impress, as he failed to link with Salah and substitute Trezeguet, and his reckless tackle saw him booked before he was replaced by coach Carlos Queiroz.
The 27-year-old came on at the start of the second half but troubled Morocco defenders with his running and good timing of the ball.
The Aston Villa player was the hero after he found himself at the right place and the right time to slide home a cross from Salah and earn Egypt the win.
