    How have Bucs' loanees performed?

The 2021/22 season has reached the midway point and there are four Pirates players, who are currently out on season-long loan deals at PSL clubs.

GOAL takes a look at how they performed thus far:

  • Monnapule Saleng, Swallows FC, December 2021

    Monnapule Saleng

The left-footed winger is in his debut campaign in the local elite league after joining Pirates from Free State Stars in July this year and he was quickly loaned out to Swallows FC.

Saleng, scooped last season's National First Division Golden Boot award after scoring 13 goals for Stars. He has been mainly been used as a bit-part player at Amaswaiswai having made 11 competitive matches for the Soweto giants.

Five of his 11 appearances came as a substitute and the 23-year-old's only goal for Swallows was netted against Cape Town City on December 18 having made his sixth start of the term.

  • Sandile Mthethwa, Chippa United, December 2021

    Sandile Mthethwa

The 24-year-old central defender is in his third loan stint at Chippa United since he joined Pirates from KwaZulu-Natal Academy in August 2016.

Mthethwa returned to Chippa in August this year a few days after making his official debut for Bucs against Stellenbosch FC in a PSL match. The former South Africa under-23 international has gone on to become a regular for the Chilli Boys.

He has made 12 appearances for the Eastern Cape side and he started all of the team's games in December under interim coach Kurt Lentjies.

  • Austin Muwowo, Swallows FC, December 2021

    Austin Muwowo

The Zambia international was hoping to revive his career when he joined Swallows on loan after failing to break into Pirates' starting line-up last season.

Muwowo struggled for game time under coach Brandon Truter upon his arrival at Amaswaiswai. However, the appointment of Dylan Kerr as the new Swallows coach in early December has given the left-footed winger a new lease of life.

The 25-year-old started Swallows' last three matches and he has made six appearances in total this term. He will be hoping to continue enjoying regular game time when the PSL campaign resumes.

  • Justice Chabalala, Sekhukhune United, December 2021

    Justice Chabalala

The towering centre back is currently on the books of Sekhukhune United and it is his fourth loan stint since he joined Pirates from Free State Stars in August 2016.

Chabalala has found game time hard to come by under Sekhukhune coach MacDonald Makhubedu having made just four appearances in the league - helping the team keep three clean sheets in the process.

Edwin Gyimah and club vice-captain Sello Motsepe have been preferred ahead of Chabalala in central defence and the Bucs loanee will be hoping for a change in fortunes when the PSL resumes in February next year.

  • Mandla Ncikazi & Fadlu Davids, Orlando Pirates

Chabalala and Saleng set for early Bucs return?

Pirates could reportedly recall Saleng during the January transfer window due to Vincent Pule's long-term injury. Saleng was one of Swallows' standout performers as they drew 1-1 with Bucs on December 14.

It has also been reported that the Buccaneers will consider recalling Chabalala next month with Happy Jele having struggled with injuries this term, while Thulani Hlatshwayo has fallen out of favour under co-coaches Fadlu Davids and Mandla Ncikazi.

Bucs recalled Thembinkosi Lorch from loan at Chippa in January 2017 and he went on to become a key player for the Soweto giants.
