Olympique Lyonnais v PSG Live Commentary, 18/09/2022

0 - 1
L. Messi (5)
Groupama Stadium

That's all from us, we hope you enjoyed the game. Until the next one, goodbye!
Lyon remain sixth, and have now not won half of their eight games. They need to turn their form around if they're to fight for a European spot this season. Form is no such worry for PSG, who overtake Marseille to return to the summit of the Ligue 1 table. While only on top by two points, their goal difference of +22 is double that of Marseille, an ominous sign at this early stage.
He may have ended up on the losing side, but makeshift central defender Thiago Mendes was absolutely titanic at the back for Lyon at times. As well as making three final third entries and winning two of three aerial duels, the Brazilian won possession five times, made five blocks, four interceptions, and three tackles and clearances apiece. Lyon's form suggests their defence is on the leaky side, but apart from an early goal that caught the entire team napping, OL's rearguard was exceptional against PSG's all-star attack.
The match ends, with that early goal from Messi proving the difference despite a second half featuring a plethora of chances. The second 45 minutes was a much more end-to-end affair than the first, with both sides having chances that tested each goalkeeper. Lyon attacked in plenty of numbers, but they couldn't quite find that clinical final pass or finish to bring the game level, while Lopes was forced into several superb saves late on as PSG pushed for a second. Lyon's third straight defeat couldn't be avoided in the end, while a fourth straight victory in the competition sends PSG back to the top of Ligue 1.
90' + 4' After an Mbappe shot is blocked by Gusto, Lyon hoof the ball up-field to Dembele. He climbs high into the air, but touches it with his hand, claiming that a foul should have been blown in his favour!
90' + 3' Lyon look to counter but it's abruptly stopped when Mukiele upends Lacazette in a tackle, and the hosts have a late free-kick of their own to make something out of.
G. Donnarumma
Yellow Card
90' + 3' Donnarumma takes his time, and then some, to take the resultant goal kick, and after long enough, the yellow card is out for time-wasting.
90' + 3' Lacazette's ball in is headed down to Reine-Adelaide, who finds Dembele to his right. He looks to cross into the crowded box, but the ball ricochets back off his leg and goes behind for a goal kick!
90' + 1' BALL IN THE NET!!! Messi hits a pearler of a free-kick, which is heading in before Lopes tips it onto the post. Danilo gets to the rebound, heading across for Ramos to nod into an empty net, but the offside flag is up against both of them, meaning the goal will not stand!
90' + 1' We're into four additional minutes of injury time to close out this game.
90' Soler is caught late by Thiago Mendes as he receives a pass and wins a free-kick right on the edge of Lyon's box. There won't be many better chances for Messi to double his goal tally in this game...
89' PSG are in no hurry to attack now, with that goal scored in just the fifth minute looking increasingly likely to be the winner. Lyon will keep on pressing and counter-attacking, but as the clock ticks down, even the home fans appear to be getting the feeling that an equaliser is not coming.
B. Barcola
K. Toko Ekambi
Olympique Lyonnais
87' Toko Ekambi comes off next for the hosts, and he's replaced by Bradley Barcola.
Carlos Soler
86' Having set up the only goal of the game, Neymar is the first of the 'big three' to come off, replaced by summer signing Carlos Soler.
85' Reine-Adelaide's ball forward is chased down by Tagliafico, who forces a corner via a deflection off Danilo which the PSG man is far from happy about!
84' Lyon break at speed as Lacazette carries it forward. He feeds Dembele, but the striker's shot is a poor one that ends up way off target!
82' WIDE!!! Cherki takes on Nuno Mendes before cutting the ball back to Gusto, who crosses into the box. Lacazette glances a header towards goal, but a deflection takes it wide and behind for a corner!
81' Gusto appears to have picked up a knock and is moving gingerly, with the absence of his overlapping run resulting in a Lyon attack down the right side coming to nothing.
79' BLOCKED!!! PSG flood forward and Messi puts Neymar into space. He has so much time to shoot, but when he does, it's too late as Thiago Mendes slides across to block yet another effort and Lyon survive once more!
78' SAVED!!! Mbappe cuts inside and finds Messi centrally. He shoots low, looking for the same corner he scored in earlier, but this time Lopes is equal to the effort and tips it wide of the post!
77' BLOCKED!!! Cherki releases Gusto to cross with a clever reverse pass, but Gusto's ball in is parried by Donnarumma. It bounces up to Dembele who heads towards goal, but again the effort is blocked and PSG deal with the threat!
R. Cherki
Olympique Lyonnais
75' Tete also comes off, and is replaced out wide by Rayan Cherki.
J. Reine-Adélaïde
M. Caqueret
Olympique Lyonnais
75' Lyon make a double change, the first of which sees Caqueret brought off for the more attack-minded Jeff Reine-Adelaide.
73' CHANCE!!! Lacazette's cross for Dembele is flapped at by Donnarumma, and the ball falls to Toko Ekambi. He attempts to lift it over the PSG goalkeeper, but Marquinhos comes to his rescue and scythes it clear!
72' SAVED!!! Nuno Mendes surges through midfield before playing a one-two with Mbappe that sends him down the byline. He cuts the ball back to Neymar, whose low shot is kept out by a stretching Lopes before Tagliafico puts it behind!
70' CHANCE!! Neymar splits the defensive line to find Nuno Mendes on an angled run down the left, and his first-time cross to Mbappe at the far post is parried away by Lopes!
69' Lyon have won their last eight Ligue 1 home games – the longest current run in the top five European leagues. OL have not had a longer such run in the top flight since January 2015, when they won nine straight.
67' Neymar almost puts Mbappe through on goal down the left, but in slides Thiago Mendes with a superb tackle to knock the ball away for Lyon!
65' Lyon work the ball well in and around the PSG box, but the eventual cross from Toko Ekambi is met by no one and Paris clear their lines!
N. Mukiele
M. Verratti
64' Off comes Verratti following that injury, and he'll be replaced by Nordi Mukiele for the champions.
62' Verratti's on his haunches and it doesn't look like he'll be able to continue, with the PSG bench looking ready to make further alterations.
60' Verratti's the next to look like he's picked up a knock, following another challenge from Caqueret, albeit one in which the Lyon midfielder won the ball as cleanly as he could.
58' Neymar's down on the ground, casually tying his bootlaces after being shunted to the floor by Caqueret. He's in no rush to get up, as PSG lead this match!
Fabián Ruiz
57' PSG make their first change of the match, bringing off Ruiz for Vitinha, who started in place of the Spaniard against Maccabi Haifa in midweek.
56' Lacazette has scored just once in seven games against PSG in Ligue 1, but it was in the most recent encounter in March 2017.
54' CHANCE!!! Caqueret's ball into the box is chested down by Lacazette, who attempts to tap it beyond Danilo and shoot, but finds only the gloves of Donnarumma!
53' Neymar attempts to weave through midfield, but he is caught in a challenge between Lepenant and Caqueret and wins a free-kick.
51' Gusto's cross from the right is missed by Caqueret, but Toko Ekambi brings it down and lays off Lepenant. He crosses back into the area, but it's too close to Donnarumma and the goalkeeper claims it.
49' Gusto whips a cross into the area for Dembele to attack at the far post, but Donnarumma's out of his goal to punch it well clear of the danger area.
48' No team has played with fewer players from different affiliations in Ligue 1 this season than Lyon (5 – Argentina, Brazil, Cameroon, France, Portugal) and PSG (7 – Argentina, Brazil, France, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, Spain).
46' OFF THE LINE!!! Nuno Mendes' cross into the box beats several defenders and finds Messi, and he dummies before chipping Lopes, but Lukeba heads it off the line!
46' PSG get us back under way, and we're off and running in the second half!
J. Lepenant
C. Tolisso
Olympique Lyonnais
46' The hosts make a half-time change, with Tolisso coming off for Johann Lepenant in midfield.
The two sides are back out for the second half, and will PSG turn the screw here to hold or even extend their lead?
Messi scored with the game's first attempt on goal, and added a further three, with two drawing saves from Lopes and a further two being blocked. The Argentinian also completed a key pass, three crosses, and won two free-kicks, as well as winning six of his eight duels, including via four dribbles. Wizard.
The first half ends, with Messi's fifth-minute goal for PSG getting the champions off to a flying start, and Les Parisiens really began piling on the pressure, testing Lopes with a shot nearly every minute. Lyon have had their spells though, and have given Donnarumma saves to make, suggesting that if they can continue to withstand any further pressure from PSG, they could well find themselves back in this contest.
43' SAVED!!! Neymar collects Nuno Mendes' pass 25 yards from goal, and cuts inside to shoot from the edge of the box. It's a good hit, Lopes sees it late and can only tip the low shot away, but PSG will come right back at him!
41' Nuno Mendes crosses to the far post, where Ramos pops up and tries to see up Messi. Lukeba gets in the way though, and deflects the ball behind for a corner.
40' BLOCKED!!! Messi puts Mbappe into a yawning hole behind the Lyon defence and the France forward races into it. He cuts inside before crossing, but Thiago Mendes cuts it out, and the ball falls to Messi who bypasses Gusto before shooting, but Thiago Mendes gets in the way of it once again and the hosts clear!
M. Verratti
Yellow Card
39' Verratti's not happy with the referee after Neymar was fouled and play carried on, and protests to such an extent that he's shown a yellow card for dissent.
38' Nuno Mendes chases a long pass from Messi but Gusto has it covered, but the Lyon right-back his dragged down by his PSG counterpart as he turns and wins the free-kick.
36' Lacazette floats in a cross, and Tolisso arrives late to head it goalwards, but's an easy one for Donnarumma to gather and he does so!
35' PSG have kept a clean sheet in each of their last three Ligue 1 games, the longest current run, and could do four in a row for the first time in Ligue 1 since November 2020.
33' SAVED!!! The searing pace of Mbappe results in Caqueret falling onto his backside, before the PSG forward smashes a low ball across the face of goal, which Lopes puts behind for a corner!
32' Mbappe shrugs off the attention of Tolisso before finding Messi. He's chased down by Lacazette, who brings Messi to ground as he passes to Neymar, and concedes a free-kick.
30' WIDE!!! Back come Lyon through Toko Ekambi, who dribbles into the box and fires a low shot to Donnarumma's right, sending the ball whistling past his near post!
29' SAVED!!! Lacazette drives at the PSG defence, cutting inside two challenges before firing low towards the corner, but Donnarumma gets down to save it!
28' Lyon break down the left and Toko Ekambi, short of passing options, cuts inside. He shoots from the edge of the box, sending a curling effort just over the top of the bar!
27' Mbappe beats several defenders before teeing up Messi, who in turn looks for Hakimi with a throughball down the right channel. Tagliafico's there though, and puts the ball back to Lopes, who thumps clear.
26' Mbappe has Gusto at arm's length, until the Lyon right-back dangles out a leg, clipping the PSG forward and conceding a free-kick.
24' Only Monaco (22) have picked up more points against PSG since the QSI takeover than Lyon (19). 15 of these points were at home, more than any other team over that period.
22' SAVED!!! Another good spell from Lyon sees Dembele and Lacazette play a one-two on the edge of the PSG box. The latter finds Toko Ekambi in space, who drills a shot towards goal, but it's parried and held by Donnarumma!
21' WIDE!!! Tolisso crosses to the far post, where Lacazette races in behind the defence and glances a header goalwards, but there's not enough power on the effort to send it into the far corner and the ball bounces just wide!
20' Lyon come forward and Toko Ekambi finds Caqueret on the edge of the box. He chests it on for Dembele to hit, but it's a woeful effort from the forward that ends up nowhere near the goal!
19' Lyon have lost their last two Ligue 1 games for the first time since October 2019. OL have not endured a longer run since a run of three in February 2018.
17' Lyon are hardly able to get out of their own half at the moment, with PSG in all-out attack mode and constantly coming straight at them. Lyon have plenty of attacking flair in their ranks, but with the way PSG, already 1-0 up, are playing, it looks a tall order for them to even have a shot on goal at the moment.
15' SAVED!! Ruiz's cut-back from the right is dummied by Neymar and Mbappe has space to shoot. He does so, but his low effort isn't the best and Lopes is able to dive low and hold the ball!
14' SAVED!!! Mbappe stands up his marker before putting Messi through a gap into the six-yard box. He cuts it back from the goal-line, but Lopes races out to parry the ball behind for a corner!
13' After a PSG attack from the right is cut out, Messi spreads it wide to Mbappe on the left. He cuts inside and shoots, but Gusto tracks him and blocks the effort from the edge of the box!
11' Ramos climbs high to head for goal from the corner, but can't direct the effort and it flies wide.
10' OVER!!!! Forward come PSG as Messi finds Neymar to his left. He crosses back into the box, but Thiago Mendes blocks Messi's first-time shot. It falls to Ruiz, who hits a rebound goalwards, but Tagliafico's block sends it over the bar!
9' A ball forward for Dembele is collected by Danilo, but the Lyon forward hassles him backwards, to the point of conceding a foul.
7' Neymar begins his 100th league game for PSG with an assist. He was already involved in 120 goals in the top-flight (77 goals, 43 assists), more than any other player after 100 Ligue 1 games since Opta stats for the competition began in 2006-07, and has made it 121 with hardly a ball kicked!
5' Neymar draws level with Messi on the assist charts by teeing him up for a superb goal, and the way the pair cut through the Lyon defence looked absolutely effortless. Superb.
L. Messi
5' GOOOOOAAAALLLLL!!!! That didn't take long!!! Messi engages several Lyon defenders before finding Neymar, who tees up Messi to shoot with a return pass. He obliges, stroking the ball elegantly into the bottom corner, and it beats Lopes to send PSG into a 1-0 lead after just five minutes!
4' Gusto's all over Neymar as he misplaces a pass, but is judged to have impeded him and concedes a free-kick.
3' PSG are unbeaten in their last 16 Ligue 1 games, winning 12. Only Milan (22) and Manchester City (18) are currently on a longer run in the top five European leagues.
1' Dembele kicks off for Lyon, and we're under way at Groupama Stadium!
1' Mbappe looks to surge forward straight away for PSG, but is tugged back and to ground by Tolisso, who concedes the free-kick.
The teams are out on the pitch, and we're almost ready for kick-off here!
The starting front three of Messi, Mbappe and Neymar all found the net in PSG’s comeback win over Maccabi Haifa in the Champions League in midweek, and while the latter two already have seven and eight goals each respectively this season, Messi leads the way in assists with seven, closely followed by Neymar with six. How long will Lyon be able to keep them at bay?
Goals have been flying in from all over the pitch for Lyon, with Lacazette, Toko Ekambi, and Tete all having netted four each. The three all start in this game, and will be looking to go toe-to-toe with PSG’s attacking trident, two of whom lead the way in the Ligue 1 scoring charts.
PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN SUBS: Keylor Navas, Juan Bernat, Vitinha, Pablo Sarabia, Nordi Mukiele, Carlos Soler, El Chadaille Bitshiabu, Warren Zaire-Emery, Hugo Ekitike.
PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN (3-4-3): Gianluigi Donnarumma; Sergio Ramos, Marquinhos, Danilo Pereira; Achraf Hakimi, Fabian Ruiz, Marco Verratti, Nuno Mendes; Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Neymar.
LYON SUBS: Remy Riou, Sinaly Diomande, Henrique, Romain Faivre, Rayan Cherki, Damien da Silva, Jeff Reine-Adelaide, Johann Lepenant, Bradley Barcola.
LYON (4-4-2): Anthony Lopes; Malo Gusto, Thiago Mendes, Castello Lukeba, Nicolas Tagliafico; Mateus Tete, Corentin Tolisso, Maxence Caqueret, Karl Toko Ekambi; Moussa Dembele, Alexandre Lacazette.
Reigning champions PSG are second, just a point behind Marseille, albeit with a game in hand. Anything but a defeat will see them return to the summit, and that’s going to be quite a task for Lyon, given the Parisians have dropped only two points so far this season, in a home draw with Monaco.
Hosts Lyon lie sixth in the table after seven games, but after winning four of their first five, have lost the last two on the bounce to Lorient and Monaco respectively. Their four wins have all come in home games though, suggesting this may well be the fixture where they get their season back on track.
Hello, and welcome to live coverage of this Ligue 1 fixture, between Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain.
