Roma are one of the most legendary football clubs in Italy.

The club have given rise to some of the greatest footballers in history who achieved legendary status in the game.

We all know of Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi.

But, what about Bruno Conti, one of the best players in the world in his prime, or Cafu, who made 163 appearances for Roma over six years!?

Roma top 10 most expensive player sales

    Moroccan legend Medhi Benatia started his senior club football journey in 2005 after graduating from Marseille's academy.

    After loan spells at Tours and Lorient, he joined Ligue 2 club Clermont in 2008.

    In 2010, Udinese came calling, signing him for free.

    Three seasons and 80 appearances later, Benatia moved to Roma in a €13.50 million move.

    However, after just one season in Rome, Bayern Munich came calling, signing him for €28m.

    After 29 appearances for Bayern over two seasons, he was loaned to Juventus, who made his move permanent for €16.70m in 2017.

    He left Juventus in 2019 before moving to Al-Duhail in Qatar. In the summer of 2021, Benatia moved to Turkish club Fatih Karagumruk before retiring from professional football in December 2021.

    After the 1998 World Cup in France, Nakata moved to Italy, signing with Perugia for €3.50 million.

    In January 2000, after making 48 appearances for Perugia, AS Roma came calling, signing him for €21.69m.

    Nakata played a crucial role in helping Roma win the Scudetto in his one season with the club.

    His best performance for Roma came on May 6, 2001 against Juventus. After replacing Francesco Totti in the second half with Roma trailing 2-0, Nakata first scored a 30-yard thunderbolt past Edwin van der Sar before helping Roma score the equaliser with another fierce strike which was parried by the Dutch goalkeeper in the parth of Vincenzo Montella, who scored for Roma in the last minute.

    The Japanese midfielder moved to Parma in the summer of 2001, for €28.40m.

    After spending two years as a youngster at River Plate's academy in Argentina, Erik Lamela made a move to Europe with Roma for €17 million.

    In two seasons with Roma, Lamela made 62 appearances, scoring 19 goals before Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur came calling.

    The Argentine winger was sold to the North London club for €30m in the summer of 2013.

    After eight years with Spurs, Lamela moved to Sevilla as a free agent in July 2021.

    Product of the famous Corinthians academy in Brazil, Marquinhos made a move to Serie A with Roma in 2012 on a season-long loan, making 16 appearances.

    Roma chose to sign him for €5.70 million in January 2013.

    After making just 10 appearances for the Italian club, he was shipped to PSG in July 2013 for €31.40m, at a massive profit.

    Miralem Pjanic moved to AS Roma from French club Lyon in August 2011 for €11 million.

    After making 159 appearances for the Italian club, he made the move to their rivals Juventus in the summer of 2016 for €32m.

    At Juventus, Pjanic spent four seasons, making 122 appearances and winning four Serie A titles along with two Italian Cups and an Italian Super Cup.

    He then moved to Barcelona for €60m in 2020 before being loaned to Besiktas.

    Pjanic joined Sharjah FC in a free transfer in September 2022.

    After impressive performances throughout the season, Roma decided to make his move permanent for €9 million in July 2016.

    Rudiger just played one season for Roma after making his transfer permanent before Chelsea came calling, paying a premium €35m for the Germany centre back.

    Rudiger went on to win the Europa League, Champions League and Uefa Super Cup with Chelsea before moving to Real Madrid for free in the summer of 2022.

    In the summer of 2019, Napoli came calling, signing Manolas for €36m.

    Manolas later moved back to Olympiacos in January 2022 before moving to Sharjah FC with Pjanic in September 2022.

    The combative midfielder made over 100 appearances for Roma in his four year spell, coming up with some memorable performances for them.

    Amid interest from top European clubs growing, Inter pounced on the opportunity to sign him in the summer of 2018, paying €38m (€24m plus Davide Santon and Nicolo Zaniolo in exchange).

    However, just one season later, he returned back to Cagliari on loan for two seasons before moving to Antwerp in Belgium in 2021 after terminating his Inter contract with mutual consent.

    After joining from Chelsea on loan in 2015, Salah went on to score 14 goals in 34 appearances for them.

    Roma decided to make his move permanent, signing him for just €15m in the summer of 2016.

    Salah just stayed for one more season at Roma, scoring 15 goals in 31 appearances before Liverpool came calling in 2017, signing him for €42m in 2017.

    The Egyptian has been a massive success at Liverpool, having already cemented his legendary status at the club by helping them win their first Premier League title and 19th English league title in 2019-20.

    After making his debut for Roma in 2016, Alisson came to prominence in the 2017-18 season, coming up with world-class performances in Roma's Champions League journey to the semi-final.

    They lost the semi-final to Liverpool 7-6 on aggregate, which would be the last time Alisson featured for Roma in the Champions League.

    In July 2018, Liverpool signed him for a mammoth €62.40 million (£56.25 million), making him the most expensive goalkeeper in the world at that time, a record that was broken by Chelsea just four weeks later.

    Alisson was a game-changing signing for Liverpool as he played a crucial role in helping them win the Champions League in his first season at the club, followed by winning the Premier League in the 2019-20 season.

    The Brazil shot-stopper also won the Uefa Super Cup, Fifa Club World Cup and an FA Cup with the Reds.

    To this day, he remains Roma's most expensive player sale in history!
