GOAL previews the nation’s stars expected to feature for their respective clubs around the world this weekend

The opening weeks of the season have been intriguing in more ways than one.

Taiwo Awoniyi overcame a tough pre-season to score Nottingham Forest’s winning strike in the Tricky Trees’ first Premier League game at the City Ground in 23 years, but the jury is still out on the erstwhile Union Berlin frontman.

Victor Osimhen had a storming start to the new campaign, seemingly picking up where he left off in the 2021-22 campaign with a goal and assist on Monday evening at Hellas Verona.

At Leicester City, Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho remain winless after two games and face off with Joe Aribo’s Southampton on Saturday.

Apart from the aforementioned, which other Nigerians ought to grace our screens this weekend?

  • Awoniyi, Dennis

    Iwobi vs Awoniyi, Dennis

Everton remain winless after two games — losing against Chelsea and Aston Villa — but Iwobi has been one of the Toffees’ best performers under Frank Lampard.

The Merseyside outfit host Nottingham Forest still buzzing from Sunday’s 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest, which was their first in the Premier League since returning after 23 years.

Taiwo Awoniyi scored the winner and the former Union Berlin frontman will hope to keep his place in the XI for the trip to Goodison Park.

The forward could play in tandem with Emmanuel Dennis who could make his first appearance for the club since joining from Watford last week.

  • Joe Aribo Southampton 2022-23

    Ndidi, Iheanacho vs Aribo

Joe Aribo played a role in Southampton’s 2-2 draw with Leeds United last week, a match that saw the Saints mount a rousing fightback from 2-0 down.

The midfielder is likely to be retained by Ralph Hasenhuttl for Saturday’s trip to Leicester City.

Wilfred Ndidi is near certain to play from the off while Kelechi Iheanacho will hope last week’s performance in the 4-2 defeat by Arsenal has done enough to convince Brendan Rodgers he deserves a far more significant role in the team.

  • Eberechi Eze of Nigeria and Crystal Palace.

    Olise and Eze

Eberechi Eze set up Wilfried Zaha’s goal in Crystal Palace’s creditable 1-1 draw at Liverpool and Michael Olise came on for the final minutes of proceedings at Anfield.

The pair could start when the Eagles welcome Aston Villa to Selhurst Park seeking their first win of the season.

Following Monday’s point on Merseyside, Patrick Vieira will believe his side are due a win this term at the third time of asking.

  • Samuel Chukwueze

Villarreal travel to Atletico Madrid this weekend looking to secure a positive result after their 3-0 success over Real Valladolid on the opening weekend.

Samuel Chukwueze came off the bench with about 30 minutes to play and might have to make do with another appearance off the bench at Wanda Metropolitano.

Both meetings between the clubs last season ended 2-2 and supporters will hope for another entertaining, goal-laden encounter this weekend.

  • Napoli forward Victor Osimhen of Nigeria.

The Napoli marksman scored one, assisted another and was involved in the move leading to the Partenopei’s third at Hellas Verona last week.

Osimhen is expected to lead the line again when Luciano Spalletti’s men host newly-promoted Monza in Naples on Sunday evening.

Having started the new campaign in fine form, the Super Eagle will back himself to put the new boys to the sword.

  • Moses Simon of Nantes and Nigeria.

    Moses Simon

Nantes are unbeaten after two games this season, with Simon scoring their only goal scored in 2022-23.

The wide attacker and his teammates travel to Olympique Marseille looking to claim their first victory of the season.

However, it will be far from straightforward if Marseille’s 4-1 win over Stade de Reims is anything to go by.
