Kolkata giants ATK Mohun Bagan played out a thrilling 2-2 draw with Mumbai City in their fourth match of the 2022-23 Indian Super League season.

With the Mariners facing a defeat as the clock ticked towards the the 90th minute, it was Carl McHugh who came up with the all-important equaliser to ensure that his team picked up a point.

    Carl McHugh

McHugh was brought on as a replacement for Hugo Boumous in the 85th minute. In four minutes, he came up with the important equaliser that broke Mumbai City hearts and helped Mariners to a point.

ATKMB won a free-kick on the left which was delivered inside the box by Dimitri Petratos. McHugh placed his header in the right corner of the goal beyond the reach of Phurba Lachenpa which helped them equalise for the second time in the night.

  2. The Losers

    The Losers

    Lenny Rodrigues

Bagan's half-time substitute did not last long in the second half. The midfielder was caught on the ball by Greg Stewart and he lost his cool. He then turned and jabbed Stewart from the back with his knee. This did not go unnoticed and the referee flashed red to Rodrigues after some consideration.

  3. Ratings: Defence

    ATK Mohun Bagan defence: 5/10

Mumbai City were allowed seven shots on target by the Bagan defence. Lallianzuala Chhangte was not closed down and was allowed ample space and time to aim and shoot which resulted in the first goal.

Soon, Pritam Kotal gave away cheap possession to Stewart just outside the box and if Mumbai were a bit more clinical then they should have been 2-0 up. Mumbai were afforded a lot of space at the back and if Vishal Kaith did not pull off a few saves the match would have been sealed in the first 45 minutes.

However, the goalkeeper should have done better during the second goal as he completely misjudged the flight of the ball.

  4. Midfield

    ATK Mohun Bagan midfield: 6/10

ATK Mohun Bagan's midfield could have contributed much more defensively. They had almost no teeth at the centre of the park which allowed Mumbai to reach the attacking third quite easily.

Deepak Tangri's presence was hardly felt in the first half and as a result was taken off at the end of the first half. His replacement in Rodrigues was doing a better job but a brain fade moment from him brought his downfall.

After falling behind, Joni Kauko had no other option but to join the attack more frequently which left spaces at the back. He was the architect behind the first goal and had a decent outing against the likes of Ahmed Jahouh and Stewart.

    ATK Mohun Bagan attack: 6/10

The Mariners used their flanks impressively through Manvir Singh and Liston Colaco. Petratos was linking well with Hugo Boumous but somehow the final ball lacked quality. Against East Bengal also Juan Ferrando's men were struggling in this aspect and almost a week later things have hardly improved.

The finishing was also not up to the mark. Boumous missed a golden opportunity as he was late to pull the trigger whereas, Petratos reached a fraction late after Manvir set him up on a platter for the first equaliser. Although the Australian rattled the crossbar in stoppage time there is much room for improvement.
