Thank you and good bye

And with that, the curtain comes down on what may have been a seismic day for the 2021-22 football season - and we're only just into the new year!

Chelsea and Liverpool's freewheeling draw means that both are likely out of the title race now - and that Manchester City are ready to pull free of the pack.

But just how long will it be before they have their hands on the trophy again? Only time will tell. Until the next time, thank you and good bye!

Young Blaugrana get 2022 off to winning start

The final whistle goes - and it is the perfect start on the pitch for Barcelona in 2022!

Xavi's side, missing more than a dozen players through Covid-19 and injury, have pulled through thanks to the efforts of their young stars, edging out Mallorca in La Liga to deliver the goods.

That will be one burden off the manager's mind. It's three more points in the bag as they look to keep their European prospects alive.

Have goals, will travel

Mallorca 0-1 Barca

Back underway

The teams are back in action now - for the last half of action for the day.

Can Barcelona add another one to see this one out or will Mallorca be able to spin things around?

We're about to find out.

HT: Mallorca 0-1 Barca

De Jong finish puts Blaugrana on top

There goes the whistle for the break and it is Barcelona's youth-heavy side who have seized upon the lead on the stroke of the interval.

Luuk de Jong, a leading light for them so far, has grabbed the only goal of this contest so far to send Xavi's men in on top.

Expect a few more twists and turns in this one before it is over.

GOAL: Mallorca 0-1 Barca

(Luuk de Jong)

The Blaugrana strike on the cusp of half-time!

Luuk de Jong has already hit the woodwork twice in this first half, but now he spears the visitors into the lead in La Liga.

Barcelona are good value for the lead, but the hosts will surely look to respond after the interval.

Young guns (go for it)

Mallorca 0-0 Barcelona

Starlets show early mettle

Mallorca 0-0 Barca

They may be young but Barcelona are not messing around so far.

They've notched three decent attempts alone on goal in this opening act, with Luuk de Jong and Ilias Akhomach both getting in on the action.

Mallorca are keeping them at bay so far, but it could well be a question of when rather than if.

KO: Mallorca v Barca

Have we saved the best for last? On a day that's delivered a few madcap matches, it's hard to say.

But we are underway in our final game in La Liga, as Barcelona look to take the fight to Mallorca to kick off the new year.

Is the Premier League race over?

Model of consistency

Bossing it

Klopp won’t be back for Arsenal

Pep Lijnders has confirmed that Jurgen Klopp will, after posting a positive Covid-19 test, remain absent from the Liverpool dugout for the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final clash with Arsenal that will take place at Emirates Stadium on Thursday.

"No, he can’t because of quarantine rules. He has mild symptoms. But Jurgen is a very optimistic, positive leader, he's our leader, our boss. I just hope it stays mild symptoms and that he’s back quick with us."

Should Mane have been sent off?

Tuchel has also been having his say on the early Mane challenge on Azpilicueta that could have seen the Liverpool forward sent off for an elbow.

The German tactician told BBC Sport: “In the first game we got the red card and the referee was so quick to give the red card. They did not check it, I hate to say it normally as I don’t like a red card early in the game, it can kill it.

“The public are here to see 11v11. Sadio Mane should always be on the pitch because he is a brilliant player and a good guy but it is a red card. If you don’t check and then can check our goal and maybe take it away… it is hard to swallow but what can we do?"

Thomas Tuchel Antonio Rudiger

A way back for Rom?

Romelu Lukaku was left out of the Chelsea squad against Liverpool following a controversial interview, but Thomas Tuchel is not about to freeze the Belgian out of his plans.

He has told Sky Sports: "He is our player, there is always a way back, we will clear this behind closed doors and once we have made a decision and Romelu knows, you will maybe know also. It is not to be discussed now."

A sense of frustration

Chelsea trailed by two goals at home to Liverpool but hit back before half-time to pull level. Christian Pulisic netted their second of the game and the USMNT star feels the Blues could have gone on to win the game.

He has told BBC Sport: "It feels like one of those games. It was an incredible first half, you feel after we got the momentum and get back 2-2 it is a bit frustrating not to get the winner but probably a fair result in the end.

"It was strange to be down 2-0. It felt like we were in the game and playing well and kept with it and scored two. It was an exciting game for sure."

Ask the question

Jordan Henderson saw Liverpool throw away a two-goal lead at Chelsea, with the Reds skipper of the opinion that the Blues first goal – a stunning volley from Mateo Kovacic – could have been ruled out as there was a player stood in an offside position.

He has told BBC Sport: "We asked the question - I was asking if he could go and have a look and make a decision, it just looked like there were two or three around which could affect the keeper, but it was a fantastic finish."

‘It is never boring with us!’

Pep Lijnders filled in for the absent Jurgen Klopp during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea and he is looking to stay upbeat despite seeing a two-goal lead surrendered by a Reds side that is about to lose Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane to the Africa Cup of Nations.

He told Sky Sports: "It is never boring with us. Incredible intensity from the start with both teams. We would have wanted more control, we had so many good counter attacks but it was just missing the last pass.

"Overall, for the public it must have been an unbelievable game. I have to say, the situation we are in it is a big compliment for the team. We could have made a lot of excuses for today but our boys fought hard with all they heart they have.

"We want to approach each game like it is a final. In each game we play, whoever is wearing the shirt or on the bench, we are showing this character.

"It was good that game was 11 v 11. We are here to entertain and to win each time and as I said at the start of the interview it is never boring.

"We have many different weapons. They [Salah and Mane] are incredibly important because they give us face, they give direction in a game and they give us desire.

"I wish them all the best in the Africa Cup of Nations. Everyone knows how it feels to play for your country. They have the right to fight for each prize as it comes."

Pep Lijnders Liverpool 2021-22

Keep believing

Liverpool and Chelsea both dropped points in a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge, but Virgil van Dijk inists no title towel is being thrown in despite Manchester City being 10 points clear.

The Reds defender has told Sky Sports: “Never difficult to believe, it is a big gap, they have the title maybe to lose at the moment but anything can happen still.

“We have been there and gave it away, so anything is possible. We focus on ourselves, we just have to get results, play good football and win games.”

He added on Liverpool throwing away a two-goal lead in west London: “If you are 2-0 up you don't want to concede that close to half time, give them the momentum to get back into the game, it happened - a fantastic strike, you have to give him credit. That gives them momentum and they score the second.

“We tried not to panic and created fantastic moments even though we were under pressure.

"For the outside world it was quite a good game to watch, but we came here for three points and didn't get them.

“They have an amazing team, so have we. I have a feeling we were under pressure at times but defended well as a team, didn't give big chances away. I always had a feeling we could score for 3-2 but it didn't happen.”

Virgil van Dijk Kai Havertz Liverpool Chelsea 2021-22

'It's a clear red'

Cesar Azpilicueta saw Sadio Mane open the scoring for Liverpool in the Reds’ 2-2 draw at Chelsea, but the Blues skipper feels the Senegalese forward should have been sent off for an elbow on him inside the opening six seconds.

He told Sky Sports: "It's a clear red. I don't mind if it's five seconds into the game, it's the first action and it's a clear red.

"It doesn't want to challenge, he doesn't see the ball he just wants to lead with the elbow. I honestly don't understand it. We've had these types of decisions recently. The other day, we had two penalties where VAR wasn't used.

"It was a clear red card and we're getting these decisions against us which could change the course of the games.

"Always they will say what they think and I understand we're promoting challenges but sometimes we're seeing joke penalties given and sometimes we see very dangerous actions and they don't take action.

"We don't see consistency even within the same game, and to me it's clear a decision like this is clear. I watched the replay, but I didn't need to. It was a clear red."

Sadio Mane Liverpool Chelsea 2021-22

A good result for the champions

FT: Chelsea 2-2 Liverpool

All over at Stamford Bridge and the points are shared. A thrilling first-half saw Liverpool edge two goals in front, only for the Blues to haul themselves level before the interval. Both sides huffed and puffed in the second 45, but there was to be no winner. Not the result that either will have wanted, as Manchester City march on, but plenty of positives to be taken with the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Jurgen Klopp absent.

Questions asked

Chelsea are asking plenty of questions of their visitors late on, but there is no way through. Liverpool are now looking to play on the counter. Mane has gone off and won't be seen again until after the Africa Cup of Nations.

Mason Mount Chelsea Liverpool 2021-22

10 minutes to go

Into the final 10 minutes we go, and the biggest surprise is that there has been no change to the scoreline since half-time. Both teams are doing all they can to find a third that could land them three big points. Is there late drama to come?

Jordan Henderson Mateo Kovacic Liverpool Chelsea 2021-22

Konate down

Konate is caught by an arm from Havertz and stays down. He requires treatment, but no action taken against the Chelsea man. He always had eyes on the ball was just looking to make himself big. The German is then taken off.

Kai Havertz Chelsea 2021-22

Changes from both sides

Pulisic goes close

Pulisic does well to control a half-volley and keep it on target. His efforts are matched by those from Kelleher, as the Liverpool pulls off an instinctive save to keep the scores level. Movement on the bench and changes on the way.

Caoimhin Kelleher Liverpool 2021-22

Superb save from Mendy

Jota bundles the ball through to Salah, who has space in front of him. He spots Mendy off his line and goes for a lob. The Chelsea keeper retreats enough to get an arm up and producing a stunning save, as he turns the ball around the post.

Mohamed Salah Liverpool Chelsea 2021-22

More of the same

Mane curls wide of the post within minutes of the restart, but was offside. Jota also strays beyond the last man before forcing a save from Medy. At the other end of the field, Alonso works a yard of space but bends over the top and into the crowd. No chance of either team settling for a point.

HT: Chelsea 2-2 Liverpool

A breathless first half at Stamford Bridge comes to a close. Four goals, could have had a couple of red cards, and the promise of much more to come! The Premier League never fails to disappoint. Happy New Year!

Sadio Mane Liverpool Chelsea 2021-22

GOAL! Chelsea 2-2 Liverpool

What a turnaround! Chelsea are now level, with Pulisic crashing into the top corner after being put through by Kante. More VAR checks for high boots and handball, but nothing will chalk that one off. What a game!

GOAL! Chelsea 1-2 Liverpool

The Blues get one back before the break, and what an effort. A stunning volley from Kovacic as he meets a punch from Kelleher and dips the ball in off the post. VAR has a look at a possible offside, but the goal stands.

Familiar face

No action against Mount

Mount and Tsimikas clash off the ball in the middle of the pitch. VAR wants to have a look. Mount did push the Liverpool defender when getting to his feet, but there was nothing in it and no card is required.

Mason Mount Kostas Tsimikas Chelsea Liverpool 2021-22

Happy hunting ground

GOAL! Chelsea 0-2 Liverpool

Salah won't be denied again as he doubles Liverpool's lead. His first touch is brilliant, allowing him to drift by Alonso. Mendy closes again, but this time the Reds frontman opens up his body and whips into the bottom corner at the near post. Ruthless from the visitors.

Salah denied by Mendy, and flag

Salah races clear, but looks offside. The flag does go up, but only after the Liverpool forward is denied by a smart stop from Mendy. Doesn't look like a game that will have just the one goal in it at the moment!

Thomas Tuchel Chelsea 2021-22

No holding back

Pulisic is the latest to go into the book. The Chelsea forward slid into a challenge on Jota that saw him got the ball first, but then catch the Liverpool forward with his studs. Unfortunate in some ways as it was momentum that took him into the Portuguese, but one of those that doesn't look great.

WATCH: Mane makes Chalobah pay

Here is how Mane made the most of a mistake from Chalobah to put Liverpool in front...

Should it have been red?

GOAL! Chelsea 0-1 Liverpool

Another mistake in a blistering start to the game. Chalobah tries to clear with his head at ground level, but diverts the ball into the path of Mane. He dummies his way around Mendy and fires into the back of the net. Game on!

Early chances

Both teams have gone close in the opening exchanges. Salah was denied by a smart stop from the advancing Salah at one end, before Alexnder-Arnold got himself in trouble at the other and Kelleher had to step out to prevent the American from strolling around him and firing into an empty net. Mane has also picked up a yellow card after catching Azpilicueta with a stray elbow. All go!

Sadio Mane Liverpool Chelsea 2021-22

Here we go…

Chelsea and Liverpool are underway at Stamford Bridge. No Lukaku, or Klopp, but plenty of superstars on show in west London.

Good omen for Liverpool?

Unfortunate record

FT: Leeds 3-1 Burnley

Leeds United secured an important victory over a resolute Burnley side to create some space between themselves and the drop zone. However, Stuart Dallas restored Leeds' lead and Dan James put the final nail in the coffin in the dying moments.

FT: Everton 2-3 Brighton

Everton and Brighton played out a five-goal thriller at Goodison Park, which also included a missed penalty, but ultimately the Toffees came out on the wrong side, meaning they kick off the new year on a sour note.

Alexis Mac Allister scored twice for Brighton, either side of a Dan Burn Header, while Everton mounted a comeback through Gordon. However, the Blues will rue a missed Dominic Calvert-Lewin spot kick as they lost by a goal.

GOAL! Leeds add a third!

Tuchel explains decision to drop Lukaku 🗣

Speaking to Sky Sports, Thomas Tuchel explained that the Romelu Lukaku issue - where he gave a controversial interview about Chelsea's tactics - became "too noisy" and so he made the decision to drop the striker from his squad.

"The thing got too big, the thing got too noisy so close to the match so I decided to protect the preparation of the match and that's why he is out," Tuchel said.

"Of course we have spoken. We have spoken twice and I have spoken to the main players.

"We have a big match to play and we need full focus...It is, in my opinion, easier if he is not in the squad. For sure, it was a difficult decision to take but in my opinion it was the decision to take."

FULL-TIME: Getafe 1-0 Real Madrid

Enes Unal's first-half strike has ended Real Madrid's unbeaten run, which had stretched to 15 games - and back to the start of October 2021 - prior to today. The Turkish forward punished slack defending from Eder Militao to give Getafe the lead and they held on valiantly, even seeing through seven minutes of added time at the end of the game. Madrid still retain a formidable lead at the top of La Liga, despite the defeat, but missed a chance to strengthen their grip on the title.

Real Madrid still trail...

A total of 15 places separate Getafe from Real Madrid in La Liga, yet the Blancos trail with about 20 minutes left to play. Getafe are under pressure but they are disrupting Madrid's play well with a lot of clever physical marking. This result could be huge for them as they battle to avoid relegation.

Calvert-Lewin misses the penalty! ❌

Plenty of drama at Goodison Park as Everton are awarded a penalty following a VAR check, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin spurns the chance to reduce the deficit by blasting his spot kick over the bar! Big disappointment for the England man.

GOAL! Burn doubles Brighton lead

It's 2-0 to Brighton and Everton's woes look set to continue into 2022. Dan Burn scores.

HALF TIME: Getafe 0-1 Real Madrid

Getafe are in front against their local rivals Real Madrid at half-time after Enes Unal capitalised on a terrible lapse in judgement from Eder Militao. Carlo Ancelotti's side have created a few clear chances since, but haven't been able to make their dominance count. They'll be confident of turning things in their favour in the next 45 minutes though.

Chance for Mendy!

Real Madrid have squandered an excellent change to pull level before half time, with Ferland Mendy dragging an effort wide after being played in by Karim Benzema. Frustration etched on the faces of Los Blancos players as they continue to trail.

'Best thing Lukaku can do is not give interviews' - Hasselbaink

Former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has criticised Romelu Lukaku for his controversial interview with Sky Sport Italia, in which the Belgium striker expressed frustration at Thomas Tuchel's tactics.

"The best thing he can do is not give interviews any more," Hasselbaink told Sky Sports. "That is just absolutely bad. Bad, bad, bad, bad.

"I like Romelu. I think he is an absolutely magnificent player. When he is playing he gives Chelsea a different dimension. You don't have [what Lukaku brings] at Chelsea or in the world, really - the Number 9s, they are really gone. But, what he has said and how he has said it, I don't understand that.

"It's four matches, to spit your dummy out after four matches and say that you want to go away and go back to Inter... if you really wanted to stay at Inter then say, 'I am not going to Chelsea, give me half my wages and I'll stay'. We all know he had to leave Inter because they were in financial trouble, so if you really love Inter, say, 'Give me half my wages, I want to stay here!'"

Does the Dutchman have a point? 🤔
