The Gunners hope to kick the new campaign off with a positive result at Selhurst Park

A London derby will serve as the opening game of the Premier League season for the second consecutive year, with Arsenal traveling to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace in Friday’s standalone fixture.

The Gunners suffered a 2-0 away defeat against Brentford to kick off the previous campaign and will look to avoid another slow start under Mikel Arteta.

Meanwhile, Palace head into Year 2 under manager Patrick Vieira – an Arsenal legend in his playing days – looking to build off a strong finish to last season in which they took 10 points from their final five matches.

This should be an entertaining contest to kick off the Premier League season, with both sides featuring talented attacking players. Let’s take a look at the odds and see where we can find some value.

Crystal Palace vs Arsenal odds are current as of July 28 at 5 p.m. ET on BetMGM Sportsbook.

Arsenal is a short favorite to win this match away from home, which makes some sense given that the Gunners finished fifth in the table last season while Palace ended the year in the bottom half.

There is certainly a gulf in class between the two clubs, but Palace is capable of getting a result when they play at their peak level. Arsenal know that all too well after their April visit to Selhurst Park, where they suffered a 3-0 defeat to a clinical Palace side that pounced on the Gunners’ defensive miscues.

With no recent form to go off of outside of meaningless preseason friendlies, it’s hard to predict what we will see from each side. Still, here are some tips that should help point you in the right direction.

Crystal Palace vs Arsenal Betting Tips

There Should Be Goals

Arsenal and Palace posted similarly mediocre defensive records last season, conceding 48 and 46 goals, respectively, over the 38-game campaign. Both back lines are capable of defensive lapses, while both sets of attacks are capable of causing trouble for opponents.

That is especially true on the wing, as Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka and Palace’s Wilfried Zaha are a handful to deal with and led their respective teams in goals last season. While Arsenal should have more possession and Palace will look to sit back and hit the Gunners on the counter, I absolutely see both teams scoring here.

Old Faces in New Places

The first game of the new season is always a bit of a difficult one to gauge, especially given each team’s activity level in the summer transfer market.

Still, Arsenal seems to have had a strong preseason and looks set to contend for a top-four finish after adding Gabriel Jesus and Alex Zinchenko from Manchester City this summer.

Palace’s offseason has been somewhat quieter outside of the recent addition of USMNT defender Chris Richards, but quiet may be good given that Zaha is entering the final year of his contract and took part in Palace’s preseason tour.

Saliba’s Time to Shine?

One of Mikel Arteta’s biggest wins of the offseason was convincing center back William Saliba to remain at the club after a successful loan spell at Marseille.

The 21-year-old was named Ligue 1 Young Player of the Season last year and looks to be one of the best young center halves in all of Europe. If he is given the chance to start alongside either Gabriel or Ben White, as he did occasionally during preseason, we could see a more resolute Arsenal defense in this match and throughout the year.

Crystal Palace vs Arsenal Prediction

Arsenal 2, Crystal Palace 1

The Gunners have typically been slow starters in the Premier League, but a lot of that has had to do with the club waiting until the very last minute of the transfer window to do their business.

This Arsenal squad is generally unchanged from the end of last season, with a few new quality players added into the mix well ahead of kickoff. That, in addition to a strong run of preseason results, should help them hit the ground running this season.

Meanwhile, Palace has invested in Richards and midfielder Cheick Doucouré, the latter of whom will have to fill the boots of the club’s 2021-22 Player of the Season, Conor Gallagher. Gallagher, who was on loan at the club from Chelsea, is looking to break into the Blues’ first-team squad this season.

I believe this will be a compelling season opener with plenty of attacking play, but Arsenal has too much quality for Palace and that should shine through in the end.

Crystal Palace vs Arsenal Best Bets

➕ Over 2.5 Total Goals (-115) at BetMGM Sportsbook

WAGER: 1 Unit

This would have been a winning bet in both fixtures between these two clubs last season (3-0 & 2-2), and it makes a lot of sense considering the attacking talent and sometimes lack of defensive stability on both sides.

Zaha, Jean-Philippe Mateta, and Jordan Ayew are capable of creating chances on the break for Palace, while Martin Ødegaard should have time on the ball to try and break down the opposing defense and set up the likes of Saka, Jesus, and Gabriel Martinelli.

These two teams have combined for 3+ goals in nine of their last Premier League meetings, so this doesn’t feel like too much to ask for.

➕ Both Teams to Score: Yes (-130) at BetMGM Sportsbook

WAGER: 1 Unit

This is another way to play the prevailing thought that there will be goals, but it may only require a total of two to be successful. Despite the fact that they were shut out in their last trip to Selhurst Park, Arsenal is expected to score at least once here.

Given the Gunners’ defensive record in recent years, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the hosts score as well. Before last year’s 3-0 result, both Arsenal and Palace had found the back of the net in six of the last seven fixtures at Selhurst Park, including four straight.

➕ Arsenal Moneyline (-105) at BetMGM Sportsbook

WAGER: 0.5 Units

Although I’m more confident in the above wagers, I’m going to take my chances with the Gunners on the road here. Arsenal is the stronger side and should be well aware of the threat that Palace poses after their poor showing here in April.

Even with the possibility of a draw in play, these odds are just too tempting to pass up.
