Both Sporting and Arsenal will be thinking about the chances they missed today, but will be content knowing that the tie is still balanced heading into the second leg at the Emirates next Thursday. Before that game, Sporting host Boavista in the league while Arsenal travel to Fulham.
Arsenal started the game on the front foot and took the lead after Saliba headed past Adan from Vieira's corner in the 22nd minute. Sporting reacted by pressing higher up the pitch and found an equaliser 12 minutes later as Inacio capitalised on poor marking from a corner. The match became very hectic as both Adan and Turner were forced into good saves toward the end of the half, but the scoreline remained 1-1 going into the break. The second period started with Arsenal creating a flurry of chances before Paulinho scored against the run of play. Turner's parried the ball into the striker's path and he tapped home to put Sporting ahead. Arsenal replied quickly after Morita turned the ball into his own net as he tried to intercept Xhaka's pass. Both sides pushed for a late winner but they head into the second leg level at 2-2.
