Commentary

That concludes our commentary of the LaLiga fixture between Real Madrid and Osasuna! We hope you’ve enjoyed it!
Real Madrid host Shakhtar Donetsk in midweek Champions League action ahead of a trip to play Getafe next Saturday. Osasuna welcome Valencia to El Sadar on Friday.
Real Madrid fail to make the most of their opportunities in the second half as the Blancos are held without a win for the first time all season, drawing Osasuna 1-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu. Vinicius’ somewhat fortunate opener gave the hosts the lead at the half despite enterprising play from the visitors, who were rewarded for their efforts immediately after the restart. Kike Garcia’s nodded finish gave the Navarrese a deserved equaliser but it looked to be for naught in the closing stages, when David Garcia’s foul on Benzema was deemed a red-card offence. Down to 10 men, Herrera first saved Benzema’s ensuing penalty before a number of tremendous saves kept Arrasate’s numerically disadvantaged side level for the final 12 minutes. The point puts Osasuna sixth, while Madrid are level with Barcelona at the top!
90' + 6' FULL-TIME: REAL MADRID 1-1 OSASUNA.
90' + 4' Real Madrid striker Rodrygo has scored in each of his last three LaLiga games (three goals), becoming only the second player born in the 21st century to score in three successive games in the competition after Ansu Fati for Barcelona in October 2020 (four goals).
90' + 2' Mariano rises high above Hernandez to get on the end of Valverde’s cross but the substitute striker fails to hit the target, lifting his chance up and onto the roof of the goal!
90' The fourth official indicates five minutes will be added to the end of the match for stoppages.
88' Vinicius cuts inside and whacks a pinpoint accurate shot low to the far post but Herrera sees it the whole way, diving low to his left to make a clean catch.
M. Díaz
Dani Carvajal
86' One final alteration for Real Madrid sees striker Mariano introduced for Carvajal.
85' Alaba takes the corner-kick from the right flag but his disappointing effort sails high over the heads of his team-mates and behind for a goal-kick.
84' Camavinga’s low drive towards goal misses the target but a slight touch on its way takes it behind for a Real Madrid corner.
Manu Sánchez
Moncayola
82' Arrasate makes three changes in one go, with Sanchez in for Moncayola.
Aridane
Nacho Vidal
82' Hernandez is also sent onto the pitch with eight minutes left, taking over for Vidal.
A. Budimir
Kike García
82' Kike Garcia is replaced shortly after picking up a booking, with Budimir on in his stead.
81' BENZEMA SCORES BUT HE’S OFFSIDE! It’s a second missed opportunity in a matter of seconds as Benzema is in a slightly offside position as Vinicius’ awkward pass filters through. The France international turns on the ball and slams it home but the linesman’s flag goes up and the referee agrees with the decision!
K. Benzema
Penalty Miss
79' WHAT A SAVE! IT REMAINS 1-1! Benzema steps up to the penalty spot and hammers his shot high in the middle of the goal, with Herrera unfooled by the mind games! The goalkeeper stands his ground and throws a big hand in the air to tip the spot-kick over the crossbar!
Kike García
Yellow Card
78' Kike Garcia comes across to remonstrate with the referee, giving him his opinion of the overturned decision. It won't change his mind however as the striker is shown a yellow.
David García
Red Card
78' AND HE'S OFF! Not only has the referee pointed to the spot and awarded Real Madrid a penalty, but David Garcia is given his marching orders 12 minutes from time! Osasuna down to 10 men!
78' There is a VAR check for an incident inside the Osasuna penalty area, with Benzema seemingly bundled over from behind by David Garcia. The France international looked to be tracking Camavinga’s cross at the time, with the two-handed shove in the back affecting his balance. The hosts could be given a penalty!
76' The second of the two substitutions will mean that Alaba pushes to left-back, while Militao plays alongside Rudiger in his traditional role in the middle of the defence.
Éder Militão
F. Mendy
74' Ancelotti makes a change in his defence with Militao replacing Mendy.
Marco Asensio
T. Kroos
74' Asensio will add fresh legs to the midfield with Kroos withdrawn after 74 minutes.
73' Rodrygo looks to scoop a cross into the penalty area but a deflection on the way through takes the ball up and over the crossbar for a corner-kick.
71' A cynical foul on David Garcia from Rodrygo takes the centre-back out and ends the Real Madrid move - giving Osasuna a free-kick just outside their penalty area.
Rubén Peña
A. Ezzalzouli
69' A swap on the wing sees Ezzalzouli's match come to an end as Pena is introduced.
Aimar Oroz
D. Brašanac
69' Oroz comes on for Brasanac in Osasuna’s first change of the game.
68' Carvajal teases a cross to the far post that’s attacked by both Vinicius and Benzema. The goalkeeper looks to make the clean catch but he bobbles it on the way down - forcing Unai Garcia into a hurried clearance to prevent the ball from dribbling over the line!
66' Rodrygo uses the forward run of Alaba as a dummy, cutting inside and hitting a powerful shot towards Herrera that’s claimed by the goalkeeper at the second attempt.
64' Kroos crosses the ball into the penalty area in the aftermath of a short free-kick but Torro rises highest on the 18-yard line to make the emphatic clearance.
62' At home, Real Madrid have not lost in their last 14 matches against Osasuna in LaLiga (W12 D2), since a 0-3 defeat in April 2004, and have not conceded in their last three - they have never gone four without conceding at home to the Navarrese in the competition.
60' Rodrygo plays a dangerous chip over the top of the defence for Benzema, who brings it down beautifully before hammering a shot towards Herrera. The goalkeeper makes himself big to make the parry but it wouldn’t have counted anyways as the linesman belatedly raises his flag.
58' Kroos and Alaba stand over the set-piece but it’s the left-footed Austria international who takes it, sending his effort whistling wide of the target.
57' Camavinga is upended by Torro, giving Real Madrid a free-kick in a dangerous position 25 yards from goal.
55' Vinicius and Benzema work a one-two on the edge of the penalty area but the France international is unable to use the space that he’s given as his pass forward for Rodrygo is intercepted.
F. Valverde
A. Tchouaméni
53' Ancelotti makes it two changes at one juncture with Valverde also on for Tchouameni.
E. Camavinga
Dani Ceballos
53' Real Madrid make a change minutes after conceding, with Camavinga in for Ceballos.
52' SO CLOSE TO A SECOND! Gomez is left all alone inside the penalty area, beating Mendy and Tchouameni before putting a cross across the face of goal for Kike Garcia. The goal scorer gets a toe to the ball but sends his chance wide of the post from close range!
Unai García
Assist
50' A crucial assist from centre-back Unai Garcia puts Osasuna back level.
Kike García
Goal
50' OSASUNA HAVE THEIR EQUALISER! 1-1! Unai Garcia puts a cross into the penalty area from a position deep on the right wing which allows Kike Garcia to attack it. The striker rises above Rudiger and nods his finish into the top corner!
49' Kike Garcia is deemed to have been too phyiscal with Alaba, putting two hands on the back of the defender in order to get by him - giving Real Madrid a free-kick just outside their penalty area.
A. Ezzalzouli
Yellow Card
47' Yellow Card Abdessamad Ezzalzouli
46' Real Madrid get the match restarted from the kick-off!
Gomez and Ezzalzouli have been the standouts for Osasuna in the first half, though they’ve left Kike Garcia a somewhat isolated figure. Despite the suspension of Avila, the visitors still have options should they want to change the point of attack, with Budimir a likely entrant. Real Madrid won't be pleased until they find a bit of insurance with a second goal as Valverde waits on the bench for his chance to shine.
Real Madrid enter the half-time interval a goal ahead after a tight and fiercely contested first half, thanks to Vinicius’ cross-cum-shot that beat Herrera just three minutes before the whistle. Dominant in both shots and possession, the hosts still allowed their opponents to create opportunities, with Ezzalzouli giving Carvajal a difficult time down the left wing. The goal came from nothing as a short corner was worked all the way to the opposite flank for Vinicius, whose curling effort mystified a seemingly prepared goalkeeper. Arrasate will not be happy that his team are going into the break behind but the game is still finely poised at 1-0.
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: REAL MADRID 1-0 OSASUNA.
Dani Ceballos
Yellow Card
45' + 1' Ceballos receives a yellow card for a stomp on the foot of Torro after the Real Madrid midfielder's first touch let him down.
44' The fourth official indicates two minutes will be added to the end of the half for stoppages.
D. Alaba
Assist
42' Alaba gets the assist for finding the open Vinicius on the left wing.
Vinícius Júnior
Goal
42' HOW HAS THAT GONE IN?! 1-0 REAL MADRID! Real Madrid take a corner from the right short, moving the ball to the far side for Vinicius. The Brazil international teases a low, bouncing cross into the penalty area which somehow gets by the entire crowd of bodies and past Herrera into the far corner!
41' With just under five minutes left it’s still anybody’s game with Real Madrid and Osasuna trading opportunities with neither side clinical enough in front of goal. Both Ezzalzouli and Vinicius have been bright sparks on their respective left wings, with a goal through that avenue most likely.
39' INCREDIBLY CLOSE TO 1-0! Herrera’s goal-kick is met by the head of Tchouameni, who places his nodded pass into the path of Vinicius. The winger burns Vidal for pace and chips a cross to the far post for Benzema, whose left-footed volley with the inside of his foot curls narrowly around the crossbar! It remains 0-0!
37' Vinicius looks to be clean through inside the penalty area after Rudiger’s long pass over the top of the defence but a push from the Brazil international on Vidal gives Osasuna a chance to clear their lines from a free-kick.
35' A sublime pair of sliding challenges from Cruz first gets the ball away from Rodrygo before playing it back off Ceballos and out for a throw-in deep in the Osasuna half. It’s a fantastic display of tackling from the visiting left-back, who has won possession for his side.
33' Carvajal teases a cross to the far post which is missed by David Garcia’s acrobatic attempted clearance but Vidal helps out his team-mate by connecting with his diving effort to prevent Herrera from being called into action.
31' Real Madrid have not lost in their last 14 games against Osasuna in LaLiga (W10 D4), since a 0-1 defeat in Pamplona in January 2011 - their longest unbeaten run against the Navarrese in the top-flight.
29' Missed opportunity for Rudiger, who gets on the end of Kroos’ curled free-kick only to direct his header in the opposite direction from the goal - doing the defence’s job for them.
27' Gomez plays a lovely switch from left to right 20 yards from goal which allows Moncayola to test his aim. The midfielder shapes and hammers a low strike that’s put far too centrally for Lunin - who grasps the ball gratefully.
25' Ezzalzouli again exhibits his fantastically quick feet with a mazy run to get beyond Carvajal but his low, centring pass is cleared off the six-yard line by Alaba.
23' Vinicius is appealing for a penalty after going down in an attempt to get into the 18-yard box. The Brazil international didn’t appear to know where he was going as he runs directly into Gomez - with the winger unable to do anything else in that scenario as the referee allows the game to continue.
21' Play is stopped temporarily for what appears to be a water break, though the referee is not exactly clear about his intentions. The two sides come to the touchline to take on some fluids before regaining their shapes to continue through a Carvajal throw-in.
19' An Osasuna corner by Gomez is initially cleared at the near post by Carvajal before a Moncayola foul on Mendy prematurely ends the second-phase of the corner-kick.
17' CHANCE! Carvajal is given far too long to shape his cross, with the right-back waiting for team-mates to make a run before curling his delivery to the edge of the six-yard box. Mendy rises just above Benzema to get his head to the ball but he’s unable to turn it goalwards!
15' Unai Garcia again shows off his ability from centre-back, striding forward confidently with the ball before finding Kike Garcia on the edge of the penalty area. The striker then shifts play to his left for Ezzalzouli, with the young winger sending his eventual shot into the side-netting.
13' Carvajal tracks back well to help Rudiger deal with Ezzalzouli, winning back possession ahead of his own corner flag before completing a difficult pass back to Lunin which keeps the ball for the hosts.
11' Unai Garcia executes a phenomenal turn in his own half to get past Kroos and Tchouameni but the centre-back overplays his hand and gives the ball right back to Mendy on the halfway line.
9' Play is stopped temporarily for Vidal, who clashed heads with Mendy during a duel for an aerial ball. The full-back should be okay to continue but any injury to that part of the body requires a bit of an inspection.
7' Brasanac and Cruz combine to get past Rodrygo but the full-back’s threaded pass is again foiled by the Real Madrid defence.
5' Vinicius takes a corner-kick short looking to get play restarted immediately but Ceballos’ chip into the area from the edge of the 18-yard box is repelled by David Garcia.
3' Ezzalzouli bursts into the penalty area and looks to find Brasanac but the midfielder’s centring cross is blocked away by an alert Mendy.
1' Osasuna get the match underway from the kick-off!
Osasuna make three changes to the side that lost 2-0 to Getafe on September 18. Moncayola comes into midfield ahead of Ruben Garcia while a red card to Ezequiel Avila leaves room for Ezzalzouli to start. The final swap involves another Garcia as Kike is chosen ahead of Budimir.
Real Madrid make four changes to the XI that beat Atletico Madrid in the derby on September 18. Thibaut Courtois has been diagnosed with sciatica, which gives Lunin an opportunity to start between the posts. Rudiger takes over for Militao in the middle of the defence while a hamstring injury to Modric means Ancelotti selects Ceballos in midfield. The final alteration comes in attack, where a healthy Benzema replaces Valverde.
OSASUNA SUBS: Manuel Sanchez, Ante Budimir, Aridane Hernandez, Ruben Garcia, Roberto Torres, Aimar Oroz, Ruben Pena, Kike Barja, Pablo Ibanez, Juan Perez, Aitor Fernandez.
OSASUNA XI (4-3-3): Sergio Herrera; Nacho Vidal, Unai Garcia, David Garcia, Alvaro Cruz; Jon Moncayola, Lucas Torro, Darko Brasanac; Abdessamad Ezzalzouli, Kike Garcia, Moi Gomez.
REAL MADRID SUBS: Alvaro Odriozola, Eder Militao, Federico Valverde, Eden Hazard, Eduardo Camavinga, Nacho, Lucas Canizares, Diego Pineiro, Marco Asensio, Mariano, Jesus Vallejo.
REAL MADRID XI (4-3-3): Andriy Lunin; Ferland Mendy, David Alaba, Antonio Rudiger, Dani Carvajal; Toni Kroos, Aurelien Tchouameni, Dani Ceballos; Vinicius Junior, Karim Benzema, Rodrygo.
With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let’s take a look at how the two sides are lining up - starting with our hosts!
A fantastic start to the season has Osasuna up in seventh position after three wins in their last five matches. A 2-0 defeat to Getafe before the international break may have dented their form somewhat but a first victory over Los Blancos in 11 years could put the Basque side up into the Champions League places after seven fixtures played.
Real Madrid are looking to make it 10 straight wins to start the campaign in all competitions since their 2-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Super Cup. One point back of Barcelona at the top of LaLiga after the Blaugrana’s three points yesterday, Carlo Ancelotti’s side can return to the summit with a second-successive win over Osasuna.
