Everton are next in action on the road to Aston Villa next Saturday in the Premier League. Chelsea host Tottenham in their first home match of the term next Sunday.
Chelsea get off the mark in the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Everton on the opening day at Goodison Park. Jorginho scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot after Ben Chilwell was brought down in the box in first half stoppage-time. It was a game of few chances, but the visitors were resilient enough to fend off the few attempts Everton made to notch an equaliser to secure the three points.
90' + 12' Tarkowski rises to connect with Gray's cross, but it rolls safely into the hands of Mendy.
90' + 11' Everton have one last chance to knock a free-kick into the box to get an equaliser.
Marc Cucurella
Yellow Card
90' + 11' Cucurella kicks the ball away and is booked on his Chelsea debut.
C. Gallagher
90' + 9' Gallagher makes his full Chelsea debut as he replaces the goalscorer Jorginho.
M. Holgate
Yellow Card
90' + 8' A mistake from Pickford forces Holgate to pull back Pulisic before he can fire at goal from distance. He concedes a free-kick and goes into the book.
90' + 7' James angles a cross into the box from the right flank for Broja to head towards goal, but his effort is tame and Pickford claims it with ease.
90' + 6' Broja draws a foul from Tarkowski, backing into the Everton defender. He wins a free-kick to allow Chelsea to take seconds off the clock.
90' + 5' Sterling probes on the counter, but Mykolenko makes another fine block to stop his pass from reaching Pulisic in the Everton box.
90' + 3' Thiago Silva looks to have strained his hamstring playing the ball out from the back. Chelsea's ageing defence are struggling with the intensity of the game.
90' + 1' Gray curls a free-kick into the Chelsea box from the left flank, but the visitors are resolute at the back to clear the danger through Thiago Silva.
90' There will be 10 minutes of added time.
89' Chelsea have had just three shots in the second half so far (none on target), they last had fewer in the second 45 minutes of a Premier League game in October 2021, against Brentford (1).
88' Cucurella makes a burst down the left flank and draws a challenge from Holgate to win a corner. Chelsea get a chance to take further time off the clock.
87' We're back under way after the pause in play.
85' There has been a medical emergency in the crowd and the game has been halted.
83' BLOCK! Sterling is denied by Mykolenko. Sterling starts the move with a pass out wide to Cucurella, who fires a dangerous cutback into the middle. The forward connects with a low strike, but Mykolenko sticks out a boot to divert a goalbound effort wide of the left post.
82' OVER! James takes the resulting free-kick, but he curls his right-footed strike comfortably over the bar. Not the best attempt from the Chelsea full-back.
V. Mykolenko
Yellow Card
80' Mykolenko pulls back Loftus-Cheek on the charge on the edge of the box. He goes into the book and hands Chelsea a free-kick in a dangerous position.
78' Cucurella makes a foray forward and finds Kante in support, but the midfielder takes a poor first touch and loses out to Doucoure to halt the Chelsea attack.
A. Broja
K. Havertz
75' Havertz is replaced by Broja in the final third. The German was off the pace for the majority of the game.
Marc Cucurella
K. Koulibaly
75' Cucurella makes his Chelsea bow to replace Koulibaly at the back.
74' Koulibaly is struggling with cramp and will have to make way here. The defender might just be feeling the pace of the Premier League.
73' CHANCE! Patterson makes a burst forward from the back and he squares the ball inside for Alli, but he fails to find his footing and scuffs his eventual effort wide of the right post.
Rúben Vinagre
Y. Mina
70' Mina is forced to leave the field with an ankle problem. Vinagre enters the field to replace him.
67' Another worry for Everton as Mina goes down clutching his ankle. The Toffees cannot afford to lose another defender this afternoon.
67' Against no other side has Alli scored more Premier League goals than his five against Chelsea. A warning for the Blues.
C. Pulišić
M. Mount
65' Pulisic replaces Mount in the final third, who has not been overly influential today.
R. Loftus-Cheek
B. Chilwell
65' Chilwell is withdrawn after completing 65 minutes on his comeback trail. Loftus-Cheek replaces him, which will see a re-shuffle in the ranks.
63' Thiago Silva plays a loose pass out from the back and it allows Gray to run at Koulibaly. He tries to fire a cutback towards Gordon, but Jorginho covers back to make the interception.
D. Alli
D. McNeil
61' McNeil is withdrawn after a reserved debut. Alli replaces the winger in the final third.
58' Chelsea have not been able to regain their footing in the final third in the second half. They've lacked rhythm and it has been a comfortable start to the half for the home side.
R. James
Yellow Card
56' James goes into the book for time-wasting from a throw-in on the right flank.
54' Doucoure causes problems in the final third once more with a teasing low ball into the middle that Koulibaly has to sweep away from Gordon.
52' SCRAMBLE! Mendy gets himself in a tangle from Gray's corner, but he makes up for it with a brilliant stop to deny Doucoure as he lines up a blast from inside the box. The loose ball falls kindly for Mendy to gather to allow him to breathe again.
51' Doucoure releases McNeil into the inside-left channel, but the winger opts for a pass back inside to his team-mate that Thiago Silva diverts behind for a corner.
50' Sterling probes down the left flank and looks to find room for an offload. Three Everton defenders converge around the forward before he can find a team-mate to quell the Chelsea attack.
48' BLOCK! Gray faces off against Thiago Silva in a foot race and beats the Brazilian with ease to bear down on goal. He lines up a blast, but the Chelsea defender recovers well to deflect his effort wide of the left post.
47' Chelsea are unbeaten in their last six English Premier League matches when leading at half-time (W4, D2) dating back to 4th December 2021 against West Ham United (L2-3).
46' We're back under way at Goodison Park.
Tuchel will be relieved heading into the break as his side were lacking a cutting edge in the final third. Chilwell's burst provided their one moment of penetration and it forced the mistake from the home side. There's still work to do, especially for a new look backline to see out the result.
Chelsea hold a 1-0 lead over Everton at the break in their Premier League clash at Goodison Park. The Toffees played well for the majority of the first half even after losing Ben Godfrey to a serious ankle injury. However, Doucoure lost his concentration at a crucial period in stoppage time and hauled down Chilwell in the box. Jorginho converted the spot-kick and now the home side face a mammoth task to get back into the game in the second period.
Penalty Goal
45' + 9' GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!! JORGINHO CONVERTS! 1-0 CHELSEA!!!! The Italy international faces off against Pickford from the spot, but unlike his effort from the Euro 2020 final, he finds the bottom-left corner with a clean strike. A perfect penalty to send the keeper the wrong way.
Y. Mina
Yellow Card
45' + 8' Mina tries to put off Jorginho before he takes his penalty and goes into the book. A needless booking.
45' + 7' PENALTY TO CHELSEA! Chilwell bursts into the box and Doucoure shoves the Chelsea full-back to the ground. The referee does not hesitate and points to the spot.
45' + 5' Chelsea are creeping on to the front foot towards the end of the half. Everton have to hold firm here.
45' + 3' Perhaps a look into the game situation as McNeil has attempted four tackles in this game, more than any other player on either team. Everton will be wanting him to be active in the final third rather than the defensive.
45' + 2' Tarkowski is on the spot for the Toffees at back once more with an important block to deny Sterling after he was teed up by Kante.
45' + 1' Kante and James combine down the right and the former floats a cross into the middle. Havertz cannot make clean contact and the ball just spins away from Sterling at the back post.
45' There will be eight minutes of added time.
44' Gordon weaves his way past white shirts in the Chelsea box, but the space narrows as he looks to shoot. Koulibaly sticks out a boot and deflects back off Gordon to win a goal-kick.
43' DISALLOWED GOAL! Sterling slots the ball past Pickford, but the flag goes up late for offside. Kante's strike is spilled by Pickford straight to Sterling, who finishes well past the Everton keeper. His celebrations are cut short by the offside flag, which is the correct call.
42' Gray leaves Azpilicueta in his wake on the counter and only needs to beat Thiago Silva with his pass to release Gordon. However, the Brazilian sticks out a boot and breaks up the attack.
41' BLOCK! Sterling threads the ball through to Mount on the edge of the box, but Tarkowski reads the strike and gets a boot in the way to block the shot.
38' Gordon and Doucoure combine in the final third to almost unlock the Chelsea defence. However, Kante and Azpilicueta combine to prevent Doucoure latching onto the cutback.
36' Chelsea have had 10 corners so far - their most in the first half of a Premier League away game since October 2018 (11 v Southampton).
34' Koulibaly is very fortunate to escape a booking for pulling back Gordon on the charge. His next foul will likely end up in a booking if he makes one.
33' Holgate is holding down the fort for the hosts as the near post, heading clear multiple crosses from James. He has settled into the game well since replacing Godfrey.
33' Chelsea build down the left flank as Sterling threads the needle to release Havertz. Mina has to scramble across to divert his cutback out for a corner.
31' Sterling uses his pace to great effect and wins a free-kick in the Everton half, drawing a foul from Iwobi.
30' Chelsea's distribution out from the back has been a tad suspect and is inviting pressure from the hosts. The Blues have to be careful.
28' Mykolenko has a run down the left in acres of room. He floats a cross to the back post, and although Gordon makes contact with a header, Mendy watches it past the post.
28' Kante makes a good run down the left flank, but Everton flood men back to surround the France international to crowd him out and regain possession for the hosts.
26' Sterling gets the better of Patterson with ease down the left flank, but Holgate is in a good position to head his cross towards the near post behind.
25' SAVE! Mendy denies Tarkowski a debut goal. The Chelsea keeper tips the first cross from Gray away from danger, but Mykolenko gathers the loose ball. He hooks a cross back into the box for Tarkowski to attack. His header travels towards goal, but Mendy reacts to turn it over the bar.
24' Gray battles well down the right flank to win a corner fo the hosts. Everotn need to capitalise on moments like these.
22' Mina takes a chance as Sterling twists and turns inside the Everton box. Sterling falls on the ball and the home side get the decision for obstruction.
20' Koulibaly makes a vital headed clearance at the back for the visitors to direct Gray's cross away from danger. Gordon was inches away from making clean contact with a headed effort.
19' SAVE! Sterling feeds Mount on the edge of the Everton box and he goes for a blast towards the bottom-left corner. Pickford reacts with a solid stop before Holgate stretches to knock the rebound away from Sterling.
M. Holgate
B. Godfrey
18' Godfrey is replaced in the Everton backline by Holgate.
17' Godfrey is heading off the field on a stretcher after a lengthy delay.
13' It looks to be a serious ankle injury for Godfrey and time is being taken to ensure that he receives thorough medical attention.
11' Godfrey appears to have hurt himself quite badly after getting back to make the covering challenge. Another potential injury woe for Lampard.
10' Godfrey plays a blind backpass well away from Pickford forcing the keeper to scramble to prevent a corner. Havertz gathers the loose ball, but Godfrey slides in hard to prevent the German firing at goal. However, he hurts himself in the process.
9' There have been a few niggly fouls in the early stages of the game that has prevented both teams from finding a rhythm.
7' Havertz rises to attack a cross from the right flank from James, but he directs his header straight into the ground allowing Pickford to make a routine claim.
5' Everton are getting their foot on the ball in the early stages of the game to force the Blues back towards their own goal.
3' Doucoure gets forward into the box to attack a cross from Gray into the middle, but he glances his header harmlessly wide of the left post.
1' We're under way at Goodison Park.
Everton have won each of their last four Premier League home games against Chelsea – only once in their history have they had a longer run against the Blues, winning seven in a row between 1923 and 1935.
There are debuts for Sterling and Koulibaly for the Blues, while Cucurella is an option off the bench after signing from Brighton on Friday before the registration deadline. Tuchel sticks with the same formation, but opts for Havertz as the spearhead with Mount and Sterling in support. There's no Timo Werner on the bench as Broja is the preferred backup. Koulibaly starts alongside Thiago Silva and Azpilicueta in a backline that has a lot of experience.
Lampard hands debuts to his new signings Tarkowski and McNeil from the off. Tarkowski starts in a three-man defence alongside Mina and Godfrey in front of Pickford. McNeil is deployed on the left alongside Gordon and Gray, where the three players may interchange in the final third. The lack of options for Lampard is evident without Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin.
CHELSEA SUBS: Kepa Arrizabalaga, Mateo Kovacic, Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Trevoh Chalobah, Armando Broja, Hakim Ziyech, Conor Gallagher, Marc Cucurella.
CHELSEA (3-4-3): Edouard Mendy; Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Kalidou Koulibaly; Reece James, N'Golo Kante, Jorginho, Ben Chilwell; Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Raheem Sterling.
EVERTON SUBS: Mason Holgate, Michael Keane, Allan, Asmir Begovic, Dele Alli, Jean-Philippe Gbamin, Ruben Vinagre, Lewis Warrington, Stanley Mills.
EVERTON (3-4-3): Jordan Pickford; Yerry Mina, James Tarkowski, Ben Godfrey; Nathan Patterson, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Alex Iwobi, Vitalii Mykolenko; Demarai Gray, Anthony Gordon, Dwight McNeil.
Chelsea return to the Premier League in a bid to improve on their third-place finish from last season. The ownership situation has been resolved allowing Thomas Tuchel to reframe his team, signing Kalidou Koulibaly and Raheem Sterling with Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Romelu Lukaku among the faces leaving Stamford Bridge. Tuchel will want a strong start, especially at a venue where his side lost 1-0 last term.
Everton survived barely in the Premier League last season, needing a late resurgence in the dying stages of the season to avoid the drop. The Toffees have endured a difficult summer in the transfer market, losing Richarlison and are now operating without Dominic Calvert-Lewin for the opening weeks of the campaign. Frank Lampard bolstered his squad with the signings of Dwight McNeil and James Tarkowski from Burnley, but it will be a challenge particularly in the final third.
Hello and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Everton and Chelsea at Goodison Park.
