The draw means Celtic are out of the competition and out of contention for the Europa League too. Shakhtar can still progress to the knockout stages if they beat RB Leipzig next week. Celtic face Livingston this weekend before traveling to Real Madrid for their final group game, Shakhtar face Oleksandriya before their deciding fixture against Leipzig.
Celtic started the game on the front foot as they carried out a very high press and pinned Shakhtar into their own half. The hosts struggled to find the right passes in the final third but they took the lead in the 34th minute when a rebound fell to Giakoumakis and the striker fired past Trubin to break the deadlock. Mudryk was the best player for Shakhtar and the best player on the pitch. He showed his quality when he equalised in the 58th minute after bursting into the attacking half and firing past Hart from outside of the box. Sikan had the best chance to win the game after Mudryk put the ball on a plate for him, but the striker missed a completely open goal from just 10 yards out and the game finished 1-1.

Shakhtar are third in Group F but a win tonight could take them into second place if Real Madrid beat RB Leipzig. Three points for Shakhtar would also secure a place in the Europa League, knocking Celtic completely out of any European competition. Mykhalio Mudryk scored twice for Shakhtar in their last game as they beat Kolos Kovalivka 3-0.
Celtic are currently bottom of Group F and will need to win tonight for any hopes of European football in the new year. The only point they’ve earned in the competition so far was in reverse fixture when they drew 1-1. Angelos Postecoglou’s side on are a three-match winning run in all competitions after beating Hearts 4-3 on the weekend.
