Commentary

That's it from me here tonight. Until the next time, adios!
Atletico rise to third in the table, though they're still 10 points off Real Madrid in second and 12 behind leaders Barca. Villarreal stay seventh, having missed the chance to overhaul Simeone's side.
It was a game of few chances, but Atletico were the better team and made their superiority count. Alcacer had fired Villarreal into an early lead with a searing half-volley from the edge of the area, before a predatory finish from Correa pulled the hosts level before the break. Atletico led as Correa lifted a ball in for Koke to head home from close range, and Joao Felix made the game safe from the bench as his shot deflected through Asenjo's legs with a quarter of an hour to play.
90' + 3' FULL-TIME: ATLETICO MADRID 3-1 VILLARREAL
90' + 2' Villarreal commit men forwards and Atletico counter through Partey. He plays in Joao Felix, but the ball bounces off the back of his heel and he has to chop back to control it. He looks to bend a right-footed shot from 25 yards but hits a low effort straight at Asenjo.
90' + 1' We're into three minutes of stoppage time.
João Félix
Yellow Card
90' Joao Felix is booked for raising an arm into the face of Pena.
88' The game is petering out somewhat. Villarreal are trying to send bodies forward, but they aren't exactly hammering the door down.
86' Alberto Moreno almost latches onto a loose ball in the Atletico penalty area, but Oblak gets out to snuff out the danger.
A. Zambo Anguissa
Moi Gómez
84' And now a change for the away side, as Anguissa comes on in place of Gomez.
Marcos Llorente
Álvaro Morata
83' Llorente comes on for the last few minutes, as Morata heads off.
82' A ball in behind towards Joao Felix is overhit, and spins safely through to Asenjo. Atletico are preparing another sub, with Llorente stripped and ready to join the fray.
80' Joao Felix tricks his way into the box and shoots, but it's charged down in a crowded penalty area.
78' Trigueros tries his luck from the centre circle with Oblak just off his line, but his effort floats well wide and the keeper gets himself back into position straight away regardless.
77' Villarreal's bad second-half record continues. That's now 25 of the 35 goals they've conceded that have come after the break.
Javi Ontiveros
Iborra
75' Villarreal make a change, as Ontiveros comes on in place of Iborra.
Koke
Assist
74' Koke gets the assist for a simple interception and pass.
João Félix
Goal
74' GOAL! It's through the legs of Asenjo, Joao Felix scores off the bench! Chukwueze loses possession just outside the area, and Koke flicks it on to the youngster. He shoots left-footed from the left side of the area, and a slight deflection helps it underneath the goalkeeper.
72' The initial corner is cleared, but Trippier trips Albiol as the defender looks to loop the ball back in. Cazorla delivers the free-kick from the left touchline, and Felipe does well to head it clear.
71' Gomez looks to cross from the right, and it deflects behind off Lodi for a Villarreal corner.
70' A loose ball comes to Joao Felix in a central position in midfield, and he jinks from left to right to find himself a shooting position. He lets fly right-footed from 25 yards, but it's immediately blocked.
68' With a third of the game to go, the home side are well on top. They still aren't creating many chances, but Villarreal have only really put together one attack in the second half so far - and Koke scored at the other end just a couple of minutes after it.
66' Atletico have won three of their last four home games in the league, and now look a decent bet to make it four from five. They'd only won two out of six before that run.
Á. Correa
Assist
64' Correa gets an assist to add to his goal, showing good composure to get his head up and deliver a perfect close-range cross.
Koke
Goal
64' GOOOALL! Atletico are ahead, it's Koke from close range! Trippier finds a pocket of space on the right. He finds Correa in the area, and he clips a cross in to the edge of the six-yard box where Koke arrives to bury a powerful header.
S. Chukwueze
Gerard Moreno
64' The away side make their first change, as Gerard Moreno is replaced by Chukwueze.
62' Villarreal come forward for the first time in the half, and Alberto Moreno goes close! The ball comes to him from Cazorla at the left side of the penalty area and he twists to fire a left-footed effort towards the near bottom corner, but Oblak reacts well to get a strong hand to it.
Gerard Moreno
Yellow Card
61' Yellow card Gerard Moreno Balaguero
61' Trippier chips a ball in to Correa just inside the area, but he can't quite stretch to control the ball and it bounces through to Asenjo.
59' Saul goes through Cazorla just outside the Villarreal penalty area as Atletico look to force the issue. The home fans want play to carry on, the away side want a yellow. They're both disappointed as a free-kick is given, but no card.
K. Trippier
Š. Vrsaljko
58' Trippier is on as well, in place of Vrsaljko.
João Félix
Vitolo
57' Joao Felix is introduced, with Vitolo going off. He hasn't really had any impact on the game.
57' Partey shoots wide to the left of goal with a first-time effort from the edge of the area.
56' Pena stabs a first-time cross in from the right, but it bounces straight into the arms of Oblak. Joao Felix looks like he's getting ready to come on for the hosts.
55' Albiol is flat out on the deck for a moment after going over the top of Morata to win a header. He's back up soon enough, and will be fine to carry on.
53' Alberto Moreno does well to get a foot in and run the ball clear as Vrsaljko tried to knock it round him down the Atletico right. The home side are in control again now.
51' Iborra goes down with a yelp after being trodden on by Morata as the pair went for a loose ball. No malice in it, Villarreal get the free-kick just outside their own penalty area.
50' Vrsaljko launches in his first long throw of the evening. He gets a good distance on it, but it's headed clear from the near corner of the six-yard box.
49' Oblak launches a pass towards the halfway line, and Pena heads it out for a throw. The two sides are just feeling their way back into the game for now.
47' Another slow-starting half. Gomez picks up a loose ball and tries his luck first-time from 30 yards, but he scuffs a daisy-cutter straight at Oblak.
45' We're back underway for the second half. No changes from either side at the break.
Villarreal have been neat enough on the ball, but haven't put together an attack of note apart from the goal. Atletico have been feeding off half-chances, but will likely feel they've been the better side at the break.
No time added on at the end of a half of few chances, but two excellently taken goals. The home side have dominated the territory without really doing a lot with the ball, but found themselves behind after a quarter of an hour thanks to Alcacer's superb fizzing half-volley from the edge of the area. They pulled themselves level late into the half as Correa ghosted in behind and finished off a hopeful Vrsaljko ball over the top, and will be looking to take that initiative into the second half.
45' + 1' HALF-TIME: ATLETICO MADRID 1-1 VILLARREAL
45' Cazorla is sandwiched between Partey and Koke on the left touchline, and the home crowd are up in arms as the foul goes against them. They've been a lot more vocal since Correa's goal.
43' Before this game, Villarreal had conceded a league-high 72% of their goals this season in the second half of matches - 23 of the 32 goals they've shipped have come after the break. Atletico have reason to be confident ahead of the second half now they're level.
42' Lodi delivers a low cross from the left byline, but Asenjo steps off his goalline to scoop it up.
Š. Vrsaljko
Assist
40' Vrsaljko gets the assist, looping a first-time cross over the line of defence after another ball in wasn't properly cleared.
Á. Correa
Goal
40' GOOOALLL! Another goal out of nowhere, Correa pulls Atletico level! Vrsaljko dangles a cross in behind from deep on the right, and Correa reacts superbly to latch onto it at the right corner of the six-yard box and touch it first-time under the onrushing Asenjo. Predatory stuff from Correa.
38' Alberto Moreno draws some jeers from the home crowd with some completely unnecessary keepy-uppies as he finds himself with a bit of time on the ball. At least he's having fun.
37' Alberto Moreno jinks his way down the left and chips a cross straight into Savic. He appeals for handball, but there's nothing given.
36' Vrsaljko delivers a good, flat cross to the edge of the six-yard box. Morata has to come backwards to meet it and can only divert his header straight at Asenjo.
35' Lodi fizzes a low cross in from deep on the left and Felipe does well to twist and direct a low header towards the bottom-left corner, but Asenjo has plenty of time to react and make the save.
34' Koke does hang a cross into the back post and Felipe heads it back across, but Cazorla reads it well and heads it behind.
33' Albiol fouls Morata, eight yards or so out of the penalty area and on the left. It's would take a heck of a strike to score directly from it, but it's a decent spot for a cross.
32' Lodi attempts a first-time cross from the left side of the penalty area as a cross-field pass drops onto his foot, but he catches it wrong and it spins behind for a goal kick.
31' Correa shows a nice touch to bring a long ball down at the edge of the area. His pass forces Morata wide to the right, and Atletico have to settle for a throw. Torres then wins the ball off Correa as it comes back in.
29' Close to an equaliser! The corner is cleared but it comes back out to Vrsaljko on the right, and he loops the ball back in. Morata scissor-kicks a decent volley towards the bottom-left corner which is well saved by Asenjo, and he saves again as Correa can't apply the killer blow with a header on the rebound.
28' A good move from left to right finds Vrsaljko in space on the right again, and his low cross is knocked behind for a corner. This time the corner is lofted into the centre of the area, but it's cleared again.
26' Correa hits the free-kick into the wall, and it deflects up and behind for a corner on the left. As with the earlier delivery, it's fired in towards the near post and easily cleared away.
Rubén Peña
Yellow Card
25' Morata goes down under a challenge from Pena, right on the edge of the penalty area. Pena is booked. The free-kick will be right by the left point of the D.
23' Vrsaljko heads a ball down for Correa to chase down the right channel, but Torres wins the ball off him and keeps it in play at the byline, recycling possession back into midfield.
22' Partey looks to line up a shot from 20 yards, but Trigueros gets across to make a fine block.
21' Iborra and Cazorla combine to prevent a counter from Correa, marshalling him out of play on the left side of the pitch, right on the halfway line.
19' The game has continued in the same vein as before the goal, with Atletico dominating possession inside the Villarreal half. Still, we're coming up to 20 minutes and they haven't really created a chance with it yet.
17' Oblak's search for his 100th La Liga clean sheet goes on. He started this game on 99, but has been beaten by an absolute rocket.
Paco Alcácer
Goal
16' GOOALL! Villarreal lead out of nowhere, it's a brilliant strike from Alcacer! Gerard Moreno delivers a ball in from the right, and it's only half-cleared as far as Alcacer at the right edge of the D. He takes a touch to control it then hits it right-footed on the bounce, across goal and inside the far post. Superb finish.
14' Atletico are taking the first real foothold in the game. Villarreal are struggling to get the ball out of their own half, as Pena attempts to run it clear down the right but dribbles straight into Saul.
13' Vrsaljko twice finds space out by the right touchline and delivers a cross. One goes to the back post and one towards the penalty spot, but both are dealt with easily enough.
12' Saul wins the first corner of the evening, off the boot of Pena by the left corner flag. The delivery comes in towards the near post and is easily hooked away.
11' Gerard Moreno attempts to flick Trigueros' pass in behind for Alcacer to chase, but he gets the touch wrong and Felipe picks the ball up for Atletico. It's humped downfield, and Villarreal get it straight back.
9' Partey fires an excellent cross-field pass the other way, from left to right and finding Vrsaljko at the right corner of the area. He looks to fizz in a low cross, but it's blocked and cleared.
8' A cross-field pass from Savic drops for Lodi at the left corner of the penalty area and he swings his left boot at it from range, but the shot is blocked.
7' Vitolo almost latches onto a loose pass in the Villarreal defence, but Pena keeps the situation under control and plays the ball back to Asenjo.
5' Villarreal have been on a great run recently, losing just one of their last eight league games. Before then, they'd lost four out of five.
4' Partey attempts a long ball forward, but he overhits it and it fizzes behind for a goal kick. It's been a fairly slow start to proceedings.
3' Villarreal come forward for the first time, but Partey breaks the move down and carries the ball clear.
2' Simeone isn't on the touchline for Atletico tonight. He's been suspended for picking up five yellow cards, which is just about the most Simeone thing you could imagine.
1' We're off! Villarreal get the ball rolling, and we've got a cracking 90 minutes ahead of us to round off the week. Who are you backing?
Atletico have only won one of their last nine league games against Villarreal. The visitors have won four, leaving four draws.
Following their Champions League win over Liverpool in midweek, Atletico are boosted again by the return to fitness of Joao Felix and Trippier, who both start on the bench. Villarreal beat Levante 2-1 last time out and they make two changes, with Gaspar and Funes Mori dropping to the bench and Moreno and Torres coming into the back four.
