Atletico are next in LaLiga action on the road to Elche on Wednesday. Real Madrid face Levante in their next outing at home on Thursday.
Atletico Madrid have secured their first win over Real Madrid in LaLiga since 2016 courtesy of a 1-0 victory at the Wanda Metropolitano. Yannick Carrasco scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot after the referee overturned his initial decision not to award Matheus Cunha a spot-kick when he was brought down by Jesus Vallejo, Both teams had great chances in the second half as Carrasco hit the post, while Antoine Griezmann fired wide on multiple occasions. At the other end, Federico Valverde was denied twice by Jan Oblak, while Marco Asensio also saw a late free-kick saved. Los Rojiblancos held out for the three points to take them closer to securing a Champions League spot for next season.

81' Atletico have had great chances to kill off the game, but have not been able to take them. They need to look no further than the example of Manchester City during the week about what can happen if you fail to capitalise against Madrid.

Rodrygo's brace has seen him restored to the line-up in the final third along with Jovic and Asensio. Vinicius, Modric, Benzema, Courtois, Carvajal, Valverde and Mendy all drop to the bench, with Ancelotti affording them a rest.

Real Madrid will have to refocus this evening after the high of their Champions League triumph against Manchester City. Los Blancos were minutes away from heading out of the competition, but Rodrygo's late brace sent the contest to extra-time before Karim Benzema sent them through to the final. The LaLiga champions will be desperate to maintain their momentum ahead of the challenges to come, and they will not want to rest on their laurels against their rivals.
Atletico have stumbled in their bid to qualify for the Champions League for next season, losing 2-0 to Athletic Bilbao last time out. Diego Simeone's men have won only one of their last four matches, so the pressure is on this evening to shore up their position in the top four. They are three points ahead of Real Betis in fifth but will want the security of a stronger lead with three matches to play in the campaign after tonight.
