Commentary

That wraps up our coverage of this LaLiga draw between Athletic Bilbao and Atletico Madrid. Thanks for joining us and we hope to have your company again soon. Until then, it's bye for now!
Atletico still have problems to solve going forward. Perhaps their midweek match against Osasuna will present some solutions. By then, the Rojiblancos could find themselves three points outside the top four. Athletic's next engagement is an away game against Eibar on Wednesday. Victory appears necessary if the Europa League is to remain a realistic target.
The points are shared at San Mames as they generally seemed likely to be during that second 45 minutes. Atletico began to offer more in an attacking sense as the half wore on and substitute Arias should certainly have given them the lead. But, after Costa quickly cancelled out Muniain's opener in the first half, Simeone's men never forced the issue. Athletic were comfortable throughout and fully deserving of a draw.
90' + 6' FULL-TIME: ATHLETIC BILBAO 1-1 ATLETICO MADRID
90' + 5' Outstanding from Yeray! He heads clear an Atletico corner in the dying seconds and follows that up with an important challenge.
90' + 3' Handball against Sancet on halfway, allowing Savic to float a free-kick forward. Athletic comfortably defuse the danger.
K. Kodro
Iñaki Williams
90' + 1' One final substitution for Athletic. It's the end for Williams as Kodro comes on to lead the line.
90' + 1' The fourth official has indicated there will be five minutes of time added on. Just enough for a goal at either end!
89' Time is running out and it's looking like the points will be shared. That would seem a fair result.
86' Will Athletic settle for a point from here? The hosts have been well worth a result and might think a draw is a good one now Atletico are coming at them more.
Íñigo Martínez
Yellow Card
84' Martinez booked. That's three yellow cards now for Athletic.
De Marcos
Muniain
83' Muniain, Athletic's scorer, given a breather going into the late stages of this contest. He's off and the experienced De Marcos comes on for further reinforcement.
Unai Núñez
Yuri
83' Garitano removes Yuri, brings on Nunez and looks to be switching to a three-man defence.
83' Atletico showing more verve going forward in recent moments. Just over five minutes of normal time left for either side to find a winner.
80' HOW HAS THAT STAYED OUT? Simon makes a sensational save to keep this one level. After parrying Lodi's wayward cross, the keeper recovers brilliantly to block Arias' close-range follow-up. Atletico should be in front!
H. Herrera
Koke
78' Simeone makes his fifth and final change. Koke off, Herrera into midfield.
76' Lemar strikes the free-kick cleanly but it's straight into the wall. Time for the players to take another drinks break.
75' Closing in on the final 15 minutes at San Mames and it remains 1-1. The hosts looking a little more likely to double their tally, although Atletico have a free-kick in a central position.
72' Athletic are looking to get their full-backs involved in attacking moves fairly regularly. Yuri's run goes unrewarded this time, but he's been a danger on the left.
70' Savic rises well to head away Muniain's corner. Atletico, as ever, are defending well. The other part of their game is yet to come together this half.
Á. Correa
Marcos Llorente
68' A fourth substitution now for Atletico and it's an attacking one. Correa the man called upon. Off goes Llorente.
65' Just over 25 minutes remaining and Atletico's sole shot on target remains their goal. Perhaps Lemar and Morata will give Athletic more to think about.
Oihan Sancet
Iñigo Córdoba
63' Athletic's other change sees Cordoba come to the bench. Sancet is his replacement.
Mikel Vesga
Unai López
63' Garitano responds to Simeone's changes by making two of his own. In midfield, it's Vesga on for Lopez.
T. Lemar
Y. Carrasco
63' Simeone's third change is to inject Lemar into attacking midfield. Carrasco makes way.
S. Arias
K. Trippier
63' There's a straight swap at right-back for Atletico with Trippier withdrawn and Arias introduced.
Álvaro Morata
Diego Costa
63' An hour gone and Simeone rings the changes. On comes Morata in attack, replacing the goalscorer Costa.
60' That has to go down as a chance! Williams' intelligent off-the-ball run creates space in behind for Yuri. The left-back gets into the area and rifles a shot into the side-netting when there were options inside.
59' Excellent play from Martinez. The centre-back wins the ball in midfield, spreads it wide and carries on forward. He deserved better than to see Raul Garcia blast a cross into the stands.
57' Now it's Atletico's turn to preside over possession but this move has a bit more purpose. Eventually a cross comes in from the left and Simon comes out to collect, which he does after a slight fumble.
56' Athletic move possession from one side to the other, probing Atletico for an opening. That's until Martinez's pass, intended for Williams, runs straight out of play.
53' The substitutes are out warming up. Both coaches can use five players off the bench, of course.
51' Atletico attack down the right for the second time in as many minutes. Yeray, who was partly to blame for Costa's earlier equaliser, continues to make amends by quelling the incursion.
50' Yeray wins a brave defensive header and a foul in an aerial contest with Costa. Good defending to deal with Koke's cross.
48' Quite a bit at stake for Athletic boss Garitano, who has previously coached four losses in his five LaLiga meetings with Atletico.
46' Back underway at San Mames, where it's 1-1 with 45 minutes remaining.
It will be interesting to see whether Atletico can successfully press for a winner given goals have been so difficult to source this season. Costa's equaliser was their 32nd goal in what is their 28th LaLiga fixture. Athletic have notched two fewer.
Engaging first 45 minutes at San Mames. Atletico started better and could have gone ahead through Carrasco, before Athletic got a grip on the game. Their pressure resulted in Muniain's opener, but Atletico responded in rapid time. Costa's close-range goal leaves the teams locked at 1-1 and sets up more entertainment.
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: ATHLETIC BILBAO 1-1 ATLETICO MADRID
Iñaki Williams
Yellow Card
45' + 1' Williams frustrated after giving away a soft foul and his mood won't be helped by receiving a yellow card for slamming the ball into the ground.
42' Deflating for Athletic as their lead evaporates in a matter of moments. The hosts had been the better side in the minutes leading up to those two quickfire goals. Now they must start again.
Koke
Assist
39' Koke the creator of Atletico's equaliser. His well-weighted pass afforded Costa a relatively simple finish, albeit one he took very well.
Diego Costa
Goal
39' GOOOAAALLL!! Atletico equalise almost immediately and it's Costa with the goal. The striker rolls back the years with a predatory finish. Martinez rushes out and leaves Costa free to receive Koke's pass, turn and finish neatly into the bottom left corner. All of a sudden it's 1-1!
Muniain
Goal
37' GOOOAAALLL!! Oblak can't keep that one out! Athletic have been coming hard and now they have the opener through Muniain. The play comes left to Yuri, who rewards his captain's darting run with a classy low cross inside. Muniain's first-time finish takes a slight touch off Partey and nestles in the bottom right corner. Athletic lead 1-0.
35' It was Muniain's cross that made that opportunity for Yeray. Athletic right on top now.
33' Yes, they certainly can test Oblak! This is absolutely brilliant from the Atletico keeper. He flies to his left to turn away Yeray's glancing header following a short corner. That looked destined to be the opener!
33' Back to the action and Athletic win their second corner. Can they test Oblak again?
30' Almost half an hour gone and the referee decides it's time for a drinks break. We're still awaiting the opener at San Mames. Athletic are improving and beginning to create some promising openings.
28' Better from Athletic. Williams peels right on this occasion and fires in a low cross, which Gimenez stabs clear.
25' CHANCE! Capa advances along the right flank and crosses brilliantly for Williams, who makes good contact with the header but guides it straight at Oblak. The Atletico goalkeeper gathers at the second attempt.
24' What looked set to be a promising Atletico counter-attack comes to nothing with Llorente and Costa unable to get on the same wavelength.
22' Carrasco pins Athletic back once again. The Belgium international dribbles into the box, evading a couple of markers before attempting a left-footed shot that's deflected past the near post. Enterprising play.
20' Well there is Athletic's first shot of the game, not that it will be remembered. Yuri leans back and blazes well over from outside the area.
19' Just the one chance of note as we approach the 20-minute mark. It was Carrasco's shot and one of two registered thus far, both for Atletico.
17' Oblak is forced into an unconvincing clearance but Trippier does well to prevent a corner.
15' Carrasco is a bit unfortunate with his next involvement. The winger appeared to have made a clean tackle in a good position but the referee awards a foul.
12' CHANCE! Athletic switch off and Llorente threads a pass through for Carrasco. Simon slips while scampering into a better position but Carrasco fails to take advantage, dragging his finish across the face.
12' Atletico win the game's first corner and it's put straight back behind for another. Trippier's low delivery comes to nothing.
9' Atletico boss Simeone has won a league-high 15 games against Athletic. Another victory here would be very valuable.
Muniain
Yellow Card
6' Full-blooded challenges aplenty in the first few minutes and Muniain pays a price. He's shown a yellow card for going through Partey.
5' This time it's Atletico winning a free-kick in their attacking half after Raul Garcia goes in hard on Lodi.
3' Athletic win the first free-kick, which Lopez drives into the box. It's headed clear and Atletico look to advance forward.
2' Sunshine and shade covering the San Mames pitch in almost equal measure but it should be cool enough for the players to set a good tempo.
1' We're underway at San Mames! It's Athletic against Atletico with three LaLiga points up for grabs.
The teams are making their way out and kick-off is almost upon us!
This first match back from the break is a chance for Atletico to address their poor recent record on the road. The Rojiblancos have won just one of their past 10 LaLiga away games.
Atletico line up as expected. Joao Felix misses out through suspension and the knee injury he suffered in May, which means Llorente – the two-goal hero at Anfield – starts in behind centre-forward Costa. Gimenez gets the nod at centre-back due to Felipe's injury enforced absence. He joins winger Vitolo on the sideline. Athletic will look to attack with pace, which is going to be all the more important now the much-loved Aritz Aduriz is in retirement.
ATLETICO SUBS: Antonio Adan, Alvaro Morata, Ivan Saponjic, Angel Correa, Rodrigo Riquelme, Santiago Arias, Thomas Lemar, Sergio Camello, Mario Hermoso, Hector Herrera, Manuel Sanchez, Toni Moya.
ATLETICO XI (4-2-3-1): Jan Oblak; Kieran Trippier, Stefan Savic, Jose Gimenez, Renan Lodi; Koke, Thomas Partey; Yannick Carrasco, Marcos Llorente, Saul Niguez; Diego Costa.
ATHLETIC SUBS: Iago Herrerin, Kenan Kodro, Mikel Vesga, Mikel Balenziaga, Inigo Lekue, Mikel San Jose, Unai Nunez, Ibai Gomez, Gaizka Larrazabal, Oihan Sancet, Benat Etxebarria, Oscar De Marcos.
ATHLETIC XI (4-2-3-1): Unai Simon; Ander Capa, Yeray Alvarez, Inigo Martinez, Yuri Berchiche; Dani Garcia, Unai Lopez; Inigo Cordoba, Raul Garcia, Iker Muniain; Inaki Williams.
European qualification is also on the agenda for today's hosts Athletic, who have 11 games to push for a Europa League spot. Back-to-back wins in March strengthened the team's mid-table position and ended a 10-game losing streak that had threatened to plunge them into danger. The immediate future is beginning to look brighter, particularly now head coach Gaizka Garitano has agreed a contract extension through to 2021.
After a three-month break, these two clubs return to action with plenty still to accomplish this season. Atletico's expected title challenge failed to materialise before the hiatus and Diego Simeone's side are now caught in a very real fight for a top-four finish. Their most recent competitive contest was that see-sawing Champions League triumph over holders Liverpool but there is damage to reverse domestically, with 11 wins, 12 draws and four defeats placing them sixth as it stands.
Hello and welcome to our live coverage of what should be a fascinating LaLiga clash between Athletic Bilbao and Atletico Madrid!
