Commentary

That's all from us in this game, and what a game it was! Until the next one, goodbye for now.
Three huge points send Leverkusen up a place in the table to eighth, a point behind Wolfsburg and three behind Frankfurt in fifth. Concurrently, Bayern miss the chance to re-claim top spot in the Bundesliga, losing their game in hand to remain second in the table, a point behind Dortmund. They'll face Die Schwarzgelben in their first game following the international break, and as the 2022-23 season reaches its climax, this result has teed Der Klassiker up as a fixture that could well swing the title into either side's favour.
Palacios' two penalty attempts couldn't be kept out by Sommer, scoring both of his 12-yard shots having missed early on from distance. The Argentine completed more touches, passes, and balls in the final third than any of his team-mates, creating two big chances with the latter. Contesting 14 total duels, Palacios won eight including two dribbles, and came up with possession a game-high 10 times via three successful tackles and interceptions, also winning three free-kicks. Nerve.
Full-time, and what a result for Leverkusen at the BayArena! Two second-half penalties, both awarded by VAR following original decisions to book Amine Adli for diving, were converted by Exequiel Palacios, as Bayern's 1-0 lead was turned on its head! The hosts continued to outplay their league-leading opposition throughout, producing gilt-edged chances on the break through Diaby, Hincapie and Bakker late on. The Bavarians could've gone level near the end too, with Hradecky making excellent saves from Goretzka, Gnabry, Sane and Davies, but couldn't find a way through Leverkusen's desperate defence. A massive three points for the hosts, who enter the international break riding the crest of a wave following this result.
90' + 8' FULL-TIME: BAYER LEVERKUSEN 2-1 BAYERN MUNICH.
90' + 8' SAVED!!! Bakker chases a long Leverkusen clearance, and a slip from Stanisic allows the Leverkusen defender to race through on goal. He strides into the box with Sommer and Upamecano both closing the distance, with his shot parried well by the Bayern goalkeeper!
90' + 6' There's been a clash of heads between De Ligt and Kossounou in the box, and play draws to a half for the two centre-backs to receive treatment.
T. Fosu-Mensah
J. Frimpong
90' + 5' Frimpong comes off having been denied a late penalty, and Timothy Fosu-Mensah will see out the game at right-back for the hosts.
90' + 5' WIDE!!! The ball breaks for Coman down the right, who clips a cross to the back post. De Ligt attacks it, and gets up well to send a bullet header inches wide of the upright!
90' + 4' WIDE!! A flick from Bakker allows Hincapie to race clear off a Palacios throughball, and he bears down on goal untouched before dragging his shot wide of the far post!
90' + 3' CHANCE!! Musiala is dispossessed in the box and the hosts race down the left on the break. Bakker has Frimpong ahead of him, who beats Davies before going down inside the box! The referee is unmoved, and we might not have heard the last of this decision either!
90' + 2' SAVED!!! Sane threads a pass into an unmarked Gnabry's path, but his shot from a tight angle is met well by Hradecky, and the deflection behind off his torso results in a Bayern corner!
J. Tah
M. Diaby
90' + 1' Diaby's been much less effective in the second half, and Xabi Alonso withdraws him for defensive reinforcements in the form of Jonathan Tah.
90' We're into FIVE added minutes at BayArena, and will Bayern be able to find that all-important goal in the dying stages here?
89' Coman tries another cross in from the right, but his driven low ball is hacked away by Tapsoba!
88' SAVED!!! A wonderful double-stop from Hradecky! Sane puts his head down and heads towards goal, with his shot from the edge of the area pushed wide by the goalkeeper! Davies follows in with a volley from the edge of the box, but the Finnish stopper gets back in position and tips the ball over the bar!
87' Sane looks to pick out Musiala in the box, but Kossounou slides in to knock the ball away from danger!
85' SAVED!!! Bayern race clear on the counter through Musiala, who releases Gnabry. His right-footed shot in the box is parried skywards by Hradecky, but Coman, with plenty of time, drills a volley wide of the post!
85' CHANCE!!! Hincapie comes forward and squares to Diaby on the edge of the box, but the winger again takes too much time to shoot and loses out to De Ligt!
A. Hložek
F. Wirtz
84' Wirtz is also withdrawn, and Adam Hlozek will replace the teenager in the Leverkusen frontline.
M. Bakker
A. Adli
84' Adli's two retrospectively-awarded penalties have produced Leverkusen's 2-1 lead, and the winger comes off late for Mitchel Bakker to see out the game.
P. Hincapié
Yellow Card
83' Hincapie's not happy with Coman's challenge and shoves him before the pair have re-entered the pitch, but the referee quickly intervenes and books the Leverkusen defender.
82' Coman and Hincapie again do battle down the right, and the two slide off the pitch and into the advertising boards behind the line!
81' Musiala again engages a plethora of defenders before releasing Sane, but his heavy touch on the edge of the area sees the ball deflect back into the gloves of Hradecky.
80' Coman attempts to beat Hincapie down the right but loses out to the Ecuadorian left-back, and Coman's frustration sees him foul Palacios who had arrived to recover the loose ball.
78' Adli looks to press Upamecano back towards his own goal, but the Bayern defender is able to release the ball before Adli lunges in.
M. Tel
L. Goretzka
76' Goretzka comes off in Bayern's latest change, and he's replaced by a striker in Mathys Tel.
74' Palacios' two successful penalties have seen him triple his goal tally in this season's Bundesliga, and who knows, he may get a chance for a third if the referee books Adli in the box once more!
E. Palacios
Penalty Goal
73' GOOOOOAAAALLL!!! What a turnaround!!! Palacios hits almost the exact same shot in the exact same corner, and despite Sommer guessing the right way this time, he can't keep the ball out and it's 2-1 to Bayer Leverkusen! Two VAR-awarded penalties following initial decisions to book Adli for simulation, and just like that, the home side lead inside the final quarter of the game!
D. Upamecano
Yellow Card
73' Upamecano is instead shown the yellow for the sliding challenge just inside the box, and Palacios will have a chance to score his second for the hosts!
71' CAN YOU BELIEVE IT??? The referee heads over to the pitchside monitor once again, and having seen a slight bit of contact from Upamecano on Adli, points to the spot once more!! Unfathomable scenes in Leverkusen!
70' Adli attempts to skip over another challenge, this time from Upamecano, but goes down again. The referee's got the yellow card out for simulation once again, but he's had another word in his ear...
69' A mix-up between Upamecano and Sommer sees the Frenchman send a defensive header beyond his goalkeeper, but the centre-back recovers to pass the ball away with Wirtz closing in!
68' WIDE!!! What a chance for Bayern!!! Musiala skips past at least three defenders before playing a one-two with Mane in the box, and his low shot from the return ball rolls agonisingly wide of the far post!
67' Goretzka's clipped pass over the top is weighted perfectly for Coman to latch onto, but Andrich slides across to block the ball behind and give Bayern their first corner of the game.
66' Gnabry has a shot blocked from the edge of the box and Leverkusen try to spark a breakout once more, but De Ligt slides across to scythe the ball out on halfway.
65' Demirbay steps up from the free-kick and despite having plenty of red shirts to aim at in the box, goes for goal and blasts the set-piece well over the bar!
J. Stanišić
Yellow Card
64' A quick transition of possession allows Wirtz to put Diaby into open space down the right. He drifts inside then looks to release Adli in the same channel, but he has his feet swept from underneath him by Stanisic, who goes into the book after being penalised.
62' SAVED!!! Bayern keep possession in the final third and Gnabry spreads it wide to Coman. His floated cross to the back post falls for Goretzka, whose downward header is held by Hradecky!
60' Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso, who of course featured for Bayern during his playing career, will be delighted with his side's second-half showing thus far. They've already had several chances, and Palacios' well-taken penalty has finally seen them capitalise on the many openings they've been able to find without success in the first hour of this game.
58' Leverkusen have now scored 14 goals in the first 15 minutes of second halves this season, more than any other Bundesliga team in 2022-23.
J. Stanišić
B. Pavard
56' After conceding the penalty, Pavard comes off for Bayern, and is replaced by Josip Stanisic.
E. Palacios
Penalty Goal
55' GOOOOAAALLL!!!! Leverkusen level things up!! Palacios steps up from 12 yards and rolls his penalty into the bottom-left corner, sending Sommer the wrong way and making it 1-1 on the scoreboard! It's no less than the hosts have deserved in this game, and we are back on level terms!
54' PENALTY!! Closer inspection shows that Pavard did make contact with Adli by standing on his heel, and reverses his decision altogether by awarding the hosts a spot-kick!
54' Palacios comes forward on the break for Leverkusen, and passes centrally to Wirtz. He finds Adli in the box, who goes down under pressure from Pavard, but he goes down very dramatically and the referee considers booking him for simulation!
52' CHANCE!!! Diaby beats De Ligt down the right before cutting inside to find Wirtz, but the return ball from the forward is poor and Diaby loses possession in the box before he can shoot!
50' Musiala does well to keep the ball in the box before passing to Sane at its edge, but his shot sails well over the bar and behind for a goal kick.
49' Adli finds Diaby in space centrally, but the winger takes too long to pick a shot or pass and Kimmich wins the ball back for Bayern!
49' Bayern are unbeaten in their last 86 Bundesliga matches when leading at half-time, dating back to February 2019 - against Bayer Leverkusen.
48' CHANCE!!! Pavard is caught short by Upamecano's back-pass, and Sommer has to smash the ball clear to prevent Diaby coming up with the ball in the box!
47' A forward ball breaks for Adli, who fires off an early shot on the turn and drags the ball wide of the far post!
46' Gnabry's first touch is to kick off the second half, as Bayern get us back underway at BayArena!
S. Gnabry
S. Mané
46' Serge Gnabry also comes on, replacing Mane in attack for the visitors.
J. Musiala
T. Müller
46' Coman's introduction is part of a triple change for Bayern, as Muller is replaced by Jamal Musiala.
K. Coman
João Cancelo
46' Kingsley Coman comes on for the Bavarians at half-time, replacing Joao Cancelo down the right.
We're back for the action in the second half, and can the hosts break Bayern's resistance to find a goal or two in the next 45 minutes?
Diaby has been the dangerman for Leverkusen so far, although only one of his three shots has been on target for a total xG of 0.09. All three of his shots have come from outside the box, and he's completed eight final-third passes as well as winning both of his take-ons so far. The hosts want to get him involved in attacking play as much as possible, though they'll need to do that closer to goal if they're to find a way back against Bayern.
The reigning champions enter the break with a 1-0 lead, albeit Kimmich's opener has come entirely against the balance of play. Hosts Leverkusen have had the vast majority of chances, with Demirbay, Frimpong and Diaby all testing Sommer in the Bavarians' goal. However, the ruthless efficiency of Bayern in the final third has seen them score with their only shot on target, and Leverkusen have one hell of a task to wrestle their way back into this game.
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: BAYER LEVERKUSEN 0-1 BAYERN MUNICH.
45' + 1' We're into two added minutes at the end of this first half.
45' Davies' cross-field pass is met by Muller in the box, but Hincapie gets goal-side of him before being fouled by the Bayern forward.
B. Pavard
Yellow Card
43' Hincapie comes forward down the left and looks to release Adli, but he's bowled over by Pavard as he passes the ball and the Bayern defender is shown a yellow card, ruling him out the Bavarians' crucial next game against Dortmund.
42' Wirtz squares to Diaby in space on the edge of the box, but Upamecano's timing is perfect to cut the pass out, and he strides forward on the break for Bayern!
41' Mane chases a long pass forward from De Ligt, but fouls Palacios as he attempts to control the ball and concedes the free-kick.
J. Frimpong
Yellow Card
39' Strangely, Frimpong is shown a yellow card following that collision, which looked to be a simple coming-together as the Leverkusen right-back pleads his case!
38' De Ligt clatters into Frimpong on the near touchline, and the pair both hit the deck after a clash of heads on bodies!
36' Davies attempts to beat Kossounou around the outside and cross, but the hosts' Ivorian defender does well to force a goal kick rather than concede the corner.
35' Diaby switches play to the left, where Wirtz runs out of room before laying the ball off to an unmarked Demirbay, but his first-time shot from the edge of the area sails over the crossbar!
33' Kimmich's fourth goal of the season was Bayern's ninth consecutive strike in away games, and Leverkusen have lost all four home games in which they've conceded first in 2022-23.
31' Diaby drifts inside again and looks to get another left-footed shot off, but Upamecano gets in the way of this one and concedes a corner.
30' Mane wins possession in the final third and looks to release Davies into the box, but the Canadian is blocked off by Frimpong and Andrich recovers the ball for the hosts!
28' Bayern have avoided defeat in their last 26 Bundesliga matches when scoring the opening goal, dating back to February 2022 against Bochum and including 14 wins and four draws in such games this season.
26' BLOCKED!! Diaby drifts in-field and surges towards the box. Finding Frimpong to his right, the full-back's cross drops to Wirtz in the box, but his effort is blocked by Pavard before the offside flag goes up!
24' Demirbay switches play to the left where Adli gallops into space, but his drilled cross into the box is cleared by Davies after Pavard gets in the way.
L. Goretzka
Assist
22' Goretzka did very well to bring that ball down and find Kimmich in a crowded box, and his partner-in-crime did the rest to give the visitors the lead.
J. Kimmich
Goal
22' GOOOOAAALLL!!! The champions strike first!!! Sane's cross from the right drops for Goretzka, who tees up Kimmich in the box. His first-time finish is on target, but strikes Kossounou on the way through to wrong-foot Hradecky and fly into the back of the net! They've hardly had a sniff so far, but the visitors make use of their first chance to go 1-0 up at BayArena!
21' Wirtz goes down clutching his ankle for the hosts, but is soon able to resume play as the rain buckets down in Leverkusen.
19' The previous Bundesliga fixture between the clubs saw the Bavarians emerge victorious 4-0 at Allianz Arena in September. Sane opened the scoring for Bayern in the third minute, with Musiala, Mane, and Muller also on target.
17' WIDE!!! The Leverkusen corner is punched half-clear by Sommer, but Palacios is on the edge of the box to smash a volley back towards goal and wide!
16' SAVED!!! Frimpong's forward again and Demirbay releases him into space. He takes on Davies and cuts the ball inside him, before smashing a low shot which Sommer gets down to and tips the ball wide of the near post!
14' WIDE!!! After Andrich recovers the ball for the hosts, Leverkusen set off on the counter-attack. Adli crosses from the left for Frimpong, but Davies glances the ball away for Bayern. Diaby recovers possession, cuts inside and shoots from the edge of the box, but his curling effort is flashed wide of the far post!
12' Diaby nearly beats De Ligt for pace latching onto Wirtz's throughball, but the Bayern defender slides in to knock the ball over the sideline.
11' Davies attempts to break out of his own defensive third after Bayern head the corner clear, but he's blocked off by Tapsoba and wins a free-kick.
10' SAVED!! Frimpong takes on Davies down the right and wins Leverkusen a corner, and Demirbay's delivery is heading goalwards before Sommer tips the ball over the crossbar!
8' Goretzka charges through midfield and looks to find Muller to his right, but his wide pass is a poor one which Tapsoba intercepts.
6' Bayern have scored 47 goals in the first half of their Bundesliga games in 2022-23 – a league high and a new record at this stage of a season. Leverkusen, meanwhile, have scored 26 goals after the break, the second most of any side behind Leipzig's 27, and more than Bayern's 24 so far this season.
4' Wirtz attempts to dispossess Kimmich inside the Bayern box, but catches the midfielder with a stray forearm and concedes a free-kick.
3' Leverkusen have lost four of their last five Bundesliga home games against Bayern, including each of the last three meetings on home soil since February 2019. Bayern (2005 to 2008) and Wolfsburg (2018 to 2021) are the only sides that B04 have lost four straight games against at the BayArena.
1' Mane kicks off for the visitors, as Bayern Munich get us underway in north-western Germany!
The teams head out onto the BayArena pitch, and we're just moments away from kick-off here!
Bayern hit five at home against Augsburg last time out, with Benjamin Pavard bagging twice and full-backs Joao Cancelo and Alphonso Davies also getting on the scoresheet. All three retain their places, as does fellow scorer Leroy Sane, who starts in a deep attacking role between Thomas Muller and Sadio Mane.
Right-back Jeremie Frimpong has netted the second goal in each of Leverkusen’s last two games, and is their second-top scorer with six so far this campaign. He retains his full-back berth, and will play behind overall top scorer Moussa Diaby down the right wing.
BAYERN MUNICH SUBS: Sven Ulreich, Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman, Daley Blind, Ryan Gravenberch, Mathys Tel, Noussair Mazraoui, Jamal Musiala, Josip Stanisic.
BAYERN MUNICH (3-4-1-2): Yann Sommer; Benjamin Pavard, Dayot Upamecano, Matthijs de Ligt; Joao Cancelo, Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Alphonso Davies; Leroy Sane; Thomas Muller, Sadio Mane.
BAYER LEVERKUSEN SUBS: Patrick Pentz, Jonathan Tah, Mitchel Bakker, Sardar Azmoun, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Daley Sinkgraven, Adam Hlozek, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Ayman Azhil.
BAYER LEVERKUSEN (4-3-3): Lukas Hradecky; Jeremie Frimpong, Odilon Kossounou, Edmond Tapsoba, Piero Hincapie; Exequiel Palacios, Kerem Demirbay, Robert Andrich; Moussa Diaby, Florian Wirtz, Amine Adli.
Bayern's form was patchy in early 2023, drawing three straight January games before losing to Borussia Monchengladbach last month, although they’ve more than recovered and are currently on a three-game winning streak. Having fallen a point behind Borussia Dortmund at the top of the table, the Bavarians need to avoid defeat here to move back to the summit, with their goal difference far superior to that of the black-yellows.
Leverkusen sit ninth in the Bundesliga table, after beating Hertha Berlin and Werder Bremen in their last two games. Die Schwarzroten could climb a place to eighth with victory over the champions, which would take them just three points behind Frankfurt in the final European qualifying place.
Hello, and welcome to live coverage of this fixture in the Bundesliga, as Bayer Leverkusen take on Bayern Munich at BayArena.
