That concludes our commentary of the Ligue 1 match between Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco! We hope you’ve enjoyed it!
Next weekend is designated for the Coupe de France as both PSG and Monaco are in cup action on Sunday. Paris will travel to play SC Feignies while Monaco are away at Red Star.
All the work was done in the first half for Paris Saint-Germain, who beat Monaco 2-0 thanks to an Mbappe double dispatched before the interval. The hosts let their intensity drop in the second half and troubled Nubel with far less frequency but their opponents were kept at bay as the Monegasques were held to just three shots on Donnarumma’s goal after the restart; all of which failed to trouble the Italy international. Messi looked dangerous and contributed an assist - setting Mbappe up for the second goal - but too often his passes forward were hit with excessive power as Wijnaldum failed to get onto the end of a connection that could have been far more lethal. The result increases PSG’s lead at the top of the table to 13 points - while Monaco stay eighth.
90' + 4' FULL-TIME: PSG 2-0 MONACO.
90' + 2' The fourth official indicates three minutes will be added to the end of the 90 for stoppages.
90' + 1' Golovin cuts inside in front of Paredes and has a strike at goal which forces a dive out of Donnarumma - but the effort fails to hit the target.
M. Verratti
Yellow Card
89' Verratti is shown a late yellow card for his scissor-style tackle on Sidibe.
M. Icardi
K. Mbappé
87' Icardi will see out the remainder of the game as Mbappe is withdrawn with two minutes left.
87' A Monaco corner from the left is swung in by Golovin, who fails to find a team-mate with the delivery as Donnarumma makes a comfortable catch six yards from his goal-line.
W. Isidor
Gelson Martins
85' Isidor gets five minutes to make his presence felt as Martins makes way for Monaco.
83' PSG have won 10 of their last 11 home games in Ligue 1 but drew 0-0 in their last such game against Nice.
Ander Herrera
Á. Di María
81' Pochettino opts for more stability in the midfield as Di Maria is also brought off - giving Herrera a chance to play.
L. Paredes
I. Gueye
81' Paredes replaces the yellow carded Gueye as PSG look to hold their lead with nine minutes remaining.
80' Mbappe plays Messi into the penalty area with a lovely pass, which is met with a show of strength by the Argentine forward - who shields the ball under pressure from Maripan and sends the defender flying. The ensuing effort to the far post from an acute angle looks to be a good one, but the shot fails to bend back as it rolls behind for a goal-kick.
78' PSG’s high press pays dividends as a sloppy turnover in midfield gets Di Maria on the ball near the Monaco penalty area but his rushed pass out to the right flank for Messi is intercepted far too easily by Jakobs
76' Monaco have won just one of their last four away games in Ligue 1 (D1 L2), with that victory coming in their most recent such match against Angers on December 1st (3-1).
I. Gueye
Yellow Card
74' Gueye is now shown a yellow card as the match begins to get scrappy. The former PSG midfielder's late challenge to win the ball catches the Monaco player on the ankle - bringing him to the ground in a heap.
Gelson Martins
Yellow Card
73' Martins is shown a yellow card for interfering with Donnarumma during the goalkeeper’s diving parry. The winger had charged through into the penalty area and launched himself towards the ball - catching the Italy international instead.
71' MESSI DRAGS IT WIDE! Lovely one-touch football from Messi and Mbappe gets the former free inside the penalty area but the forward’s low shot to the far corner misses the target by the narrowest of margins - giving a grateful Nubel a chance to restart the match from a goal-kick.
69' With just over 20 minutes left it appears as though the wind has gone out of Monaco’s sails. The side that looked so dangerous in the first half have really struggled to put anything together in the second - providing Donnarumma with a fairly straightforward match since the restart.
67' Mbappe drives towards the 18-yard bpx and looks to split Maripan and Disasi with a pass for Wijnaldum but it’s cut out by the Chile international centre-back, who looks to have saved a potential goal.
E. Matazo
S. Diop
65' Matazo is in for Diop as Kovac makes a change on the wing.
64' Messi’s curling left-footed effort is scooped over the wall but it fails to drop down again as it sails over the crossbar.
G. Maripán
Yellow Card
63' Maripan steps across and catches the ankle of Messi - sending him to the ground. It’s a free-kick in shooting range for PSG while the Monaco defender receives a yellow card.
61' Jakobs goes clattering into Gueye clumsily during an attempt to win the ball near the right touchline - giving PSG a free-kick inside their own half.
59' Monaco have won their last two Ligue 1 games, each time scoring a minimum of three goals (3-1 v Angers, 4-0 v Metz). Monaco also scored a minimum of three goals in their previous winning streak between September and October (run of three wins; 3-1 v St Etienne and Clermont, 3-0 v Bordeaux).
57' Messi’s pass forward for Wijnaldum is again hit with too much pace as Nubel is allowed to come off his line and collect the ball. There has certainly been room for that connection to slice Monaco open but the Argentina captain has failed to find his final touch.
Jean Lucas
Y. Fofana
55' Fofana is replaced five minutes before the hour mark, with Lucas taking his place in midfield.
M. Boadu
W. Ben Yedder
55' A Monaco change at striker sees Boadu sent on for Ben Yedder.
54' Kehrer’s first involvement in the match is to bring Martins down in midfield during an attempt to attack down the Monaco right. It’s a free-kick to the visitors which is taken short and quick to restart play.
52' Mbappe is now down holding his ankle after Tchouameni’s slide tackle to win the ball also caught the forward. It’s a clean tackle in the eyes of the referee but the France international will be given a minute to get back to his feet with play stopped.
T. Kehrer
Juan Bernat
50' Confirmation of the enforced change as Bernat heads right down the tunnel to receive further treatment in the physio's room. Kehrer is chosen to replace him at full-back.
49' Play is stopped for Bernat, who appears to need some treatment after going down off the ball holding the back of his leg. He eventually gets to his feet and limps off to the touchline but it appears as though PSG are prepping a substitute.
48' Golovin burst into space in midfield and has a free shot at goal from 20 yards out. It’s a low effort struck with the inside of his boot but he fails to trouble Donnarumma - who gets down to his left to make a comfortable save.
46' Monaco get the match restarted from the kick-off!
I. Jakobs
Caio Henrique
46' A change at half-time sees a swap of left-backs as Jakobs is on for Henrique.
Despite a two-goal deficit, Monaco have played their part in the match, fashioning a number of half-chances to test Donnarumma. Down two goals and with no other option but to attack - look for Boadu to get a chance to run at defenders and cause havoc inside the penalty area. PSG have a number of options with which to try and hold the result - and the clean sheet - with defensive midfielders in Pereira and Herrera ready to add some balance in the midfield.
Paris Saint-Germain take a convincing 2-0 lead into the half-time interval, thanks to a double from Mbappe. The France international got the match going in the 17th minute - dispatching a penalty confidently past Nubel after Sidibe’s clumsy stomp on the ankle of Di Maria inside the 18-yard box. The visitors started the match brightly despite the setback and had a number of chances to pull level - with a lack of clinical finishing wasting great build-up play from Fofana and Diop on the right. It looked as though the hosts were happy to keep possession and take a one-goal lead into the break but Messi’s interception in midfield sparked a counter-attack in injury time; a move that would see Mbappe score his second of the half and heap more misery onto Kovac’s team.
45' + 2' The fourth official indicates three minutes will be added to the end of the half for stoppages.
L. Messi
45' Messi is deservedly credited with the assist as his silky passing as well as his industriousness set up the goal - winning the ball pack in midfield before playing Mbappe through on-goal.
K. Mbappé
45' PSG GET A SECOND JUST BEFORE HALF-TIME! Messi plays creator - intercepting a sloppy pass in midfield before driving towards goal, drawing two defenders towards him in the process. The Argentina international looks left and slips a pass through for Mbappe, who cuts inside on his right and dispatches a curling effort that sneaks into the far corner! 2-0!
43' Martins cuts inside from the right and lays a pass off to Tchouameni on the edge of the penalty area, who slips while dispatching the shot and sends it disappointingly high and wide.
41' Diop fires a corner into the penalty area from the left but it’s caught easily by Donnarumma, who makes his imposing presence felt.
39' Di Maria charges towards goal and cuts inside on the 18-yard line before attempting to slip a pass through the defence for Messi. It’s a clever attempt to link up with his international team-mate but the pass is cut out by an alert Maripan.
37' PSG are looking to keep possession in Monaco’s half, moving it from left to right before a coordinated press from the visitors forces Hakimi to go all the way back to Donnarumma. In no particular hurry - you get the feeling the hosts would be happy to take a 1-0 lead into the interval.
35' Good one-touch football from Di Maria and Messi looks to set Wijnaldum up in the penalty area but the Argentina captain’s wayward pass is sent behind for a Nubel goal-kick.
33' PSG lost their two games against Monaco in Ligue 1 last season. They haven’t had three consecutive defeats in the top flight against this opponent since between January 1999 and November 2000 (run of four).
31' Mbappe slaloms towards goal - bringing four Monaco defenders towards him but his eventual slipped pass to Mbappe with the outside of his boot is cut out by Disasi - who blasts it out for a throw-in.
29' Messi steps up and takes a left-footed free-kick from 30 yards out - sending his effort towards Nubel harmlessly high over the crossbar.
27' Extremely impressive footwork from Fofana gets the midfielder past Verratti and Hakimi on his way to the byline before cutting a pass back to the edge of the box for Disasi. The centre-back is unable to direct a close-range shot towards goal as both he and Maripan fail to get it out of their feet to trouble Donnarumma.
25' The ensuing corner is taken to the far post for Tchouameni - who puts it back towards the penalty spot for Disasi. The referee blows his whistle and ends the passage of play, however, awarding PSG a free-kick as the Monaco defender is deemed to have been far too physical in attempting to win the ball in the air.
23' WHAT A CHANCE! Tchouameni’s pass through the heart of the defence is met by Ben Yedder’s quick feet - which gets him through on goal in the midst of three defenders. He isn’t able to control it closely enough though as Donnarumma is allowed to scramble it behind for a corner.
21' Di Maria slides in and deflects Fofana’s incisive pass towards the edge of the penalty area - redirecting it and allowing Donnarumma to step off his line and gather comfortably.
K. Mbappé
Yellow Card
19' Mbappe is now shown a yellow card for charging through the back of Diop after the France international lost possession in midfield. It’s a rash and frustrated tackle - worthy of a booking.
Y. Fofana
Yellow Card
17' Fofana comes across and pulls Mbappe down during a counter-attack after the forward won possession inside his own area. It’s a cynical challenge and the referee immediately pulls out the yellow card for the Monaco midfielder.
16' PSG are disrupting Monaco’s build-up high as they look to win the ball back near the opposition penalty area. Verratti leads the charge as he slides through to put it out for a throw-in - forcing the visitors to reorganise.
14' Despite a shaky start - PSG have the early lead they were looking for. Despite their array of attacking talent, the capital club have the second-best defence in the league - allowing just two goals in their last three matches.
K. Mbappé
Penalty Goal
12' MBAPPE MAKES NO MISTAKE! The France international steps up to the penalty spot and dispatches his effort low to the left corner - beating the goalkeeper easily! 1-0!
D. Sidibé
Yellow Card
11' The referee goes over to the touchline and has a second look at the incident. After review he shows a yellow card to Sidibe and awards PSG a penalty!
10' Di Maria is down in the penalty area after dribbling past Sidibe. It looks as though the right-back caught the ankle of the Argentina international but the referee doesn’t immediately give a penalty. For now it’s a corner-kick pending VAR review, while the winger is down receiving treatment.
9' Di Maria gets to the edge of the penalty area and puts the ball on his weaker right foot but his shot is blocked by a lunging Tchouameni.
7' WIJNALDUM SENDS IT OVER! Lovely build-up play between Mbappe and Bernat allows the full-back to find space at the edge of the 18-yard box but his pullback is met by a sweeping first-time effort by Wijnaldum, who sends it high above the crossbar.
5' Early warning signs for PSG as a sloppy giveaway in midfield allowed Monaco to get behind the high line of defence. The hosts will have to tighten up and keep possession with more urgency in the face of the press if they wish to keep a clean sheet.
3' OFF THE POST AND SAVED! Diop wins the ball from Verratti in midfield and plays a lovely one-two pass with Ben Yedder before dispatching a low shot to the far post. It’s sent cannoning off the base of the post and back into the arms of Donnarumma - who can consider himself very lucky.
1' Paris Saint-Germain get the match underway from the kick-off!
Monaco make four changes to the line-up that beat Metz 4-0 last Sunday. Henrique is in at left-back for Jakobs, while Fofana is favoured over Lucas in midfield to partner Tchouameni. The final two changes are in attack - where Volland and Boadu make way for Golovin and Ben Yedder.
PSG make five changes to the XI that drew 1-1 with Lens a week ago. Constant rotation at goalkeeper sees Donnarumma replace Kavas, while the unavailability of Presnel Kimpembe means Diallo gets the start at centre-back. Two alterations in the midfield see Gueye and Wijnaldum start ahead of Pereira and Paredes and the return of Mbappe means the bench for Icardi.
MONACO SUBS: Eliot Matazo, Myron Boadu, Ruben Aguilar, Strahinja Pavlovic, Ismail Jakobs, Chrislain Matisma, Wilson Isidor, Jean Lucas, Radoslaw Majecki.
MONACO XI (4-2-3-1): Alexander Nubel; Djibril Sidibe, Axel Disasi, Guillermo Maripan, Caio Henrique; Youssouf Fofana, Aurelien Tchouameni; Sofiane Diop, Aleksandr Golovin, Gelson Martins; Wissam Ben Yedder.
PSG SUBS: Ander Herrera, Mauro Icardi, Colin Dagba, Keylor Navas, Danilo Pereira, Eric Ebimbe, Leandro Paredes, Thilo Kehrer, Rafinha.
PSG XI (4-3-3): Gianluigi Donnarumma; Juan Bernat, Abdou Diallo, Marquinhos, Achraf Hakimi; Idrissa Gueye, Marco Verratti, Georginio Wijnaldum; Angel Di Maria, Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi.
With 15 minutes to go, let’s take a look at how the teams are lining up - starting with our hosts!
Eighth-placed Monaco could shoot up the table into fifth - three points back of second - should they secure a victory at the Parc des Princes; a feat they were able to accomplish last season thanks to a 2-0 victory. Niko Kovac’s side have a good record against today’s opponents, winning two and drawing one of their last five meetings.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side are looking to extend their domestic unbeaten run to nine matches, though they’ve only managed two points from their last two fixtures. Despite the less-than-convincing performances recently, PSG still have a stranglehold over the title race and could go 13 points clear of Marseille in second with a win.
Hello and welcome to our LIVE commentary of the Ligue 1 fixture between Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco!
