Commentary

Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
City are next in action against Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday. Chelsea are on the road against Newcastle on the same day.
Manchester City advance to the fourth round of the EFL Cup courtesy of a 2-0 win over Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium. Goals from Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez in the second half were enough for Pep Guardiola's men to secure their place in the next phase of the competition. Chelsea spurned glorious chances in front of goal and they will wonder how they lost tonight. Lewis Hall, Christian Pulisic, Mason Mount and Raheem Sterling all missed openings as the Blues suffered a third defeat in their last four games.
90' + 4' FULL-TIME: MANCHESTER CITY 2-0 CHELSEA
90' + 2' It has been one of those nights for Chelsea. No matter what they have done in front of goal the ball just has not gone in.
90' There will be four minutes of added time.
90' DISALLOWED GOAL! Chelsea could play all night and not score as Pulisic sees a goal disallowed for offside after a scramble. Ortega make a rare mistake as he spills Pulisic's cross that Gomez then heads on to his own post. Sterling latches on to the rebound, but his effort is cleared off the line. Pulisic pounces on the rebound and fires the ball in off Ake, but the offside flag goes up late.

César Azpilicueta
Yellow Card
89' Azpilicueta catches Grealish with a late challenge and goes into the book.
88' INCHES WIDE! City fail to clear their lines from a corner and Mount latches on to the ball and turns to fire at goal from 18 yards out. Ortega can only watch as the ball travels inches wide of the target.
85' Chelsea continue to push as Azpilicueta hangs a cross to the back post. Havertz tries to attack with a header, but he fails to connect. Pulisic comes in behind him and cannot reach it on the slide. Frustration for the visitors.
83' Pulisic releases Havertz down the left flank and he drills a low ball across the face of goal. Sterling makes a run, but he cannot reach the delivery.

78' Havertz latches on to Cucurella's pass and goes for goal from distance, only to drag his effort wide of the target.
K. Havertz
L. Hall
75' Hall makes way knowing that he could have changed the context of the game. Havertz replaces the youngster.
75' Hall continues to offer an outlet down the left flank. He sees his cross deflected towards goal that forces Ortega to react and claim at his near post.
73' OFFSIDE! Pulisic sees his close-range effort spectacularly saved by Ortega after latching onto Loftus-Cheek's cross, but the offside flag goes up late anyway.
71' Chelsea have offered very little in the second half outside of Hall's chance. Potter needs to see more from his team in the final third.
César Azpilicueta
T. Chalobah
69' Azpilicueta comes on to replace Chalobah at the back. Chalobah was guilty of the lunge that handed Mahrez his free-kick for the first City goal.
C. Gallagher
D. Zakaria
68' Gallgher is on for Zakaria in the middle of the park.
M. Mount
A. Broja
68' Mount enters the action for the visitors to replace Broja, who had a disappointing night.
R. Sterling
H. Ziyech
68' Sterling receives a good ovation on his return to City. He replaces Ziyech in the final third.
67' Grealish goes on a mazy run through the Chelsea defence and lines up a strike, but the Blues get enough men back to block his effort.
65' Chelsea cannot complain about their lack of chances tonight. It has been the story of their recent form under Potter.
63' HALL MISSES ANOTHER CHANCE! The youngster spurns a glorious opening for the second time as he sees his effort saved by Ortega. Ziyech turns Gomez like he isn't even there on the byline and cuts a low ball back into the middle. Hall meets it first-time on his right foot, but does not make clean contact. Ortega reacts in time to turn his effort wide of the target.
62' Chelsea have come to rue those missed openings in the first half from Hall and Pulisic. The Blues face a massive challenge to turn the tie around now.

J. Álvarez
Goal
58' GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!! ALVAREZ MAKES IT TWO!!!!!!!! 2-0 CITY!!!!! The home side double their advantage as they hit the Blues on the break, allowing Alvarez to score on the rebound. Palmer works the ball to Mahrez on the right flank and he opens up space for a strike on his left foot. Mendy makes a fine save, but Alvarez reacts first and turns home the loose ball from six yards.
56' OVER! City clear the resulting corner as far as Ziyech, who winds up his left foot, but can only clear the bar with his strike from the edge of the box.

R. Mahrez
Goal

He goes for power from the edge of the box and angles his effort over the wall. Mendy has no time to react and can only watch as the ball hits the back of the net. K. Phillips

Bernardo Silva
İ. Gündoğan
50' Guardiola withdraws Gundogan five minutes into the second half. Silva replaces the German.
48' Cucurella does brilliantly at the back to prevent Mahrez firing at goal, timing his challenge to perfection, after a mistake from Kovacic allowed Alvarez to release his team-mate in the Chelsea box.
46' We're back under way at the Etihad Stadium.
Graham Potter will be the happier of the two managers at the break, but will be urging his team to take their chances on the counter. City are not quite at their best in the final third and it is good opportunity for the Blues to capitalise.
It's goalless at the break between Manchester City and Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium. Chelsea will feel that they should be ahead as Christian Pulisic missed two good chances and Lewis Hall spurned a glorious opening before the break. City have had efforts from distance through Jack Grealish, but have lacked a cutting edge in front of goal. Both managers may be tempted to turn to the experience on their benches in the second half.
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER CITY 0-0 CHELSEA
45' + 2' Chelsea clear their lines from Grealish's free-kick before the referee ends the half.
45' + 1' The game goes end-to-end as Kovacic fails to pick out Pulisic before Loftus-Cheek brings down Grealish on the left flank. Chelsea will have to defend a free-kick before the end of the half.

39' Both sides are not backing down from the challenge tonight. However, the two teams have lacked a clinical edge in the final third.
37' Broja probes down the left flank and bundles his way past Laporte. Dias comes in with a sliding challenge to take it away from the forward. City manage to scramble it away before Broja can react to the loose ball.
34' City build down the right flank and Lewis collects from Palmer. He floats a cross into the box this time rather than flashing it across the face of goal, but the Blues clear their lines.
33' Loftus-Cheek looks for the ball behind the City defence, but Ziyech is caught offside moving a fraction too early.
31' City open up Chelsea down the right flank as Rodri releases Lewis. He angles a ball across the face of goal, but no one in a City shirt can connect in the middle.
29' WIDE! Chelsea lose possession in their own half and Mahrez and Gundogan link up to release Alvarez. The forward fires a left-footed strike first-time, but he sees his effort deflected wide.
26' It has been an open contest and both teams have had good chances. Pulisic could well have put Chelsea two goals to the good.
23' CHANCE! Pulisic drives through the City midfield and reaches the edge of the box where he shoots on the slide. Ortega has to produce a sharp stop to turn his effort past the post.

19' WIDE! Gundogan lifts a strike towards goal that clips the top of the Chelsea wall and deflects just wide of the left post, skimming the side-netting.
K. Koulibaly
Yellow Card
18' Koulibaly brings down Grealish on the charge on the edge of the box, handing City a free-kick in a very dangerous position.
16' City break back and Grealish works the ball to Palmer to line up a drive, only for the midfielder to send a tame effort straight at Mendy.
15' Kovacic threads the ball through to Pulisic to break into the final third. He cuts back onto his right foot, but sees his effort charged down by Dias.
13' PULISIC HAS TO SCORE! Ziyech collects an offload from Loftus-Cheek down the right flank and lays a perfect cutback for Pulisic. The American has the goal gaping, but he scuffs his strike which takes a deflection off Lewis and travels towards goal. Ortega has to make a save to push the ball past the post. If Pulisic makes clean contact there, he scores.
12' Hall charges forward with the ball and refuses to go down amid pressure from Lewis and Rodri. He wins a free-kick for the visitors with his burst.
10' WIDE! City turn up the pressure and win another set-piece down the left flank. Chelsea fail to clear the danger from Gundogan's cross before Dias sees an effort blocked. Grealish latches on to the loose ball and powers a right-footed strike at goal that sails just wide of the left post.
8' Broja wins the ball in the final third from Gundogan and goes for goal from 25 yards, only to launch his effort well over the top.
6' Grealish plays a sublime reverse pass for Gomez in space on the left flank. He drills his cross low and hard into the middle where Koulibaly deflects it inadvertently behind for a corner.
4' City try to catch out the City defence from the resulting corner, but Kovacic is alert to divert Palmer's cross behind.
4' Grealish has a surge at the Chelsea defence through the middle, but he sees his cross towards Alvarez cleared behind by Koulibaly.
2' Mendy is caught under pressure by Alvarez, but the forward sees his block of the Chelsea keeper's attempted clearance travel out for a goal-kick
1' We're under way at the Etihad Stadium.
This is the fourth meeting between Manchester City and Chelsea in the League Cup, and first since the 2019 final, which ended 0-0 before Man City won 4-3 on penalties.
Potter makes seven changes to his team from their defeat against Arsenal at the weekend. Koulibaly returns to the backline, while Hall is given a start at left-wing back. Kovacic and Zakaria come into the middle of the park, while Pulisic, Ziyech and Broja get the nod to lead the line in a three-man attack.
Guardiola makes eight changes to the side that beat Fulham last time out. Alvarez, Gundogan and Rodri remain in the line-up, but De Bruyne among others drop to the bench. Ortega starts between the posts ahead of Lewis, Dias, Laporte and Gomez. Palmer slots into the midfield, while Grealish and Mahrez join Alvarez in the final third.

Chelsea were beaten finalists in the EFL Cup last season, losing out in an epic penalty shootout against Liverpool that was decided by Kepa Arrizabalaga's decisive miss. Graham Potter will have ambitions of securing his first major trophy win as a manager, but faces an obstacle to reach the fourth round tonight against City. The Blues suffered a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal last time out as their Premier League form continued to dip under Potter. He needs a response from his team tonight.
City return to EFL Cup action for the first time since losing last season at the hands of West Ham United in the fourth round. The defeat ended a run of four-straight EFL Cup triumphs for the club, and Pep Guardiola will be out to put the record straight this season. City enter the contest with momentum, having won their last three matches on the bounce, including their 2-1 triumph over Fulham at the weekend courtesy of Erling Haaland's stoppage-time penalty.
Good evening and welcome to the live commentary of the EFL Cup clash between Manchester City and Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium.
