Warriors were crowned inaugural DStv Compact Cup champions after securing a 2-1 win over Coastal United in the final on Saturday afternoon.

Ashley du Preez handed the Seaside an early lead, but Ruzaigh Gamildien scored twice to inspire the Gauteng side to a come-from-behind victory in a match that was played at FNB Stadium.

Coastal had reached the final after thrashing a much-fancied Dinaledi side 3-0 in the semi-final last weekend, while the Warriors edged out a stubborn Amabutho team 1-0 in another semi-final clash.

Denwin Farmer was named in the Coastal starting line-up by coach Steve Barker as the Baroka FC defender replaced Robyn Johannes, who was sent off during the clash with Dinaledi.

On the other hand, Gamildien and Goodman Mosele were the two new faces in the Warriors' starting line-up as they replaced Kwane Peprah and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo in the team.

The match got off with a fast pace with neither side happy to sit back and invite pressure, which saw Coastal take an early through the in-form Du Preez, who made it two goals in as many matches.

The Stellenbosch FC striker burst into the box from the left after being sent through on goal by Mpho Makola's exquisite pass and he fired past goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune to hand Coastal a 1-0 lead.

However, the goal did not deter Dylan Kerr's charges as they continued to launch attacks and parity was restored in the fifth minute with Gamildien marking his first start for the side with a well-taken goal.

The experienced striker ran on to Siphesihle Mbhele's delightful through pass and curled the ball into the top right corner - beating keeper Oscarine Masuluke hands down to make it 1-1.

Coastal had a good chance to restore the lead just before half-time, but Khune pulled off a sensational save to deny free-kick specialist Makola from a set-piece and the score was level at the interval.

The fans voted for Nkosingiphile Ngcobo to be introduced after the restart and the Kaizer Chiefs attacking midfielder looked to make an immediate impact for the Warriors in the PSL tournament.

Having netted a stunning goal against Sekhukhune United last month which earned him the PSL Goal of the Month award for December 2021, Ngcobo forced Masuluke into a great diving save with a strike from distance.

The momentum was Kerr's side in the closing stages of the game and Monnapule Saleng, who snatched a late winning goal for Warriors against  Amabutho, was superbly denied by Masuluke.

Masuluke was then beaten in the 83rd minute when Gamildien controlled a quality cross from his Swallows teammate Thabo Matlaba before hitting the back of the net to seal the Warriors' 2-1 win over Coastal.
