Thanks for joining our commentary this afternoon. Until next time, goodbye.
Liverpool are next in Premier League action on Thursday at home to Newcastle United. Aston Villa travel to face Norwich City in their next game on Tuesday.
Liverpool keep pace with Manchester City in the Premier League title race by beating Aston Villa 1-0 at Anfield. Mohamed Salah scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot after he was fouled by Tyrone Mings midway through the second half. It was a frenetic game, but the Reds just had enough to edge out Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard and his Villa team.
90' + 4' Fabinho clears and the referee blows the full-time whistle.
90' + 4' Villa have a throw in the dying stages of the game that Cash will send long into the Liverpool box.
90' + 3' OVER! Salah pounces on a Villa mistake and surges into the box. Mings' challenge sees the ball run to Jota, but the Portuguese can only scoop his effort over the top.
90' + 1' Liverpool press in the final third to keep Villa penned in their own half. Minamino and Henderson lead the effort.
90' There will be four minutes of added time.
T. Minamino
S. Mané
88' Minamino replaces Mane for the closing stages of the game.
86' CHANCE! Alisson makes a complete mess of a clearance at the back, slamming it into Matip. Ings almost capitalises, but the keeper does enough to knock the ball away from the forward before the Reds scramble it away.
J. Milner
Thiago Alcântara
83' Milner replaces Thiago in the middle of the park.
83' OVER! Liverpool press keep the attack alive and Mane cuts inside from the left flank to shoot on his right foot, but his effort is deflected over by Mings.
82' CHANCE! Liverpool have a three-on-two on the counter as Mane releases Salah through on goal. However, the forward goes for the pass towards Jota rather than going for goal himself and his offload is blocked by Targett.
81' Villa are asking all the questions here. Liverpool are having to dig deep at the back to quell Watkins and Ings.
79' Cash steers a cross into the box forcing Van Dijk to read the danger to clear ahead of Ings. Villa are trying to hit back in the closing stages.
77' WIDE! Jota battles Mings for a long ball forward into the Villa box. He gets the better of the defender and tries to turn to shoot on the slide, but pressure from the onrushing Martinez forces him to fire wide.
76' Salah has scored each of his last 15 Premier League penalties, just the second player to score as many consecutively in the competition, after Matthew Le Tissier (23 in a row between January 1994 and April 2000).
D. Ings
J. Ramsey
74' Ramsey makes way for the visitors as Ings enters the final third against his former club. Gerrard needs a goal from the forward.
72' OVER! Salah collects in space on the right flank and he looks for the top-right corner with his left-footed strike, but it deflects off Targett and out for a corner.
E. Buendía
A. Young
69' Buendia replaces Young in the final third for the visitors.
68' Liverpool have avoided defeat in their last 20 matches when scoring the opening goal in the Premier League, dating back to February 28 against Sheffield United.
Mohamed Salah
Penalty Goal
67' GOAL!!!!!! SALAH FIRES HOME THE SPOT-KICK!!! 1-0 LIVERPOOL!!!! The Reds finally get their reward as Salah hammers home with his left foot. The forward fires low and hard towards the bottom-right corner, and although Martinez guesses the correct way, the power of the strike beats the Argentinian.

62' Liverpool are asking serious questions of the Villa defence. It's all hands on deck for the visitors at the back.

M. Sanson
M. Nakamba
57' Sanson enters the game to replace Nakamba, who covered a lot of ground for the visitors.
56' Liverpool up the ante as Salah plays Alexander-Arnold into space. His cross just sails over the heads of everyone in the box. Robertson clips it back into the middle, which sees Alexander-Arnold regain possession, only to scuff his drive at goal.
54' WIDE! Matip climbs in the box to attack a cross from Robertson from his second corner, only to send his effort wide of the left post.
53' SAVE! Martinez produces a brilliant reaction stop to deny Van Dijk. The Dutchman attacks a corner from Robertson from the left flank and directs his header at goal. However, the Argentine is alert and palms it over the top.
51' SCRAMBLE! Mane sends Robertson into the box, but his cross is blocked by Mings. Mane pounces on the rebound, but he sees his drive repelled by the Villa skipper.
49' VAR has a quick check of a stray arm from McGinn that catches Thiago in the face, but it deems that the contact was incidental.
47' Salah collects in the final third and then floats a dangerous cross to the back post towards Mane, but Cash reads the danger to clear.
46' We're back under way at Anfield.
Jurgen Klopp's men were not clinical enough in the final third after breaking into decent positions. Andy Robertson wasted a couple of good opportunities from the inside-left channel as his execution let him down. If the Reds can hold their composure, there will surely be goals in the game for them.
It is goalless at the break between Liverpool and Aston Villa in their Premier League clash at Anfield. The Reds have had the better of the opportunities, although Emiliano Martinez has not been called on to make too many stops. Mohamed Salah had arguably Liverpool's best opening of the half when he saw his low drive saved by the Villa keeper. The visitors have been quiet at the other end, but they will not be too concerned about that at half-time.
45' + 2' Van Dijk and Young collide again in an aerial duel. This time both players are down.
45' + 1' Van Dijk catches Young with an arm to the face. The Villa man requires treatment before the game can continue.
45' There will be two minutes of added time.

42' Mane sends Robertson down the left-inside channel and he sends a dangerous cutback into the box that McGinn clears in the six-yard area ahead of Salah.
39' Mane attempts to combine with Salah with a neat flick, but the Egypt international fails to take the ball in stride in the box. It's not clicking for the Reds at the moment.
37' Mane surges past Cash down the left flank and has options in the box. He tries to clip a cross over the top of Konsa, but the defender repels the threat before McGinn concedes a corner.
35' Liverpool win a corner down the right flank that Alexander-Arnold whips into a dangerous area in the six-yard box, but no player in a red shirt can connect with his delivery.
32' Liverpool have played with energy this afternoon, but have lacked a clinical edge. They need to bring Salah and Mane into the contest.
30' CHANCE! Alisson commits himself to beating Young to a cross in the box, but he slips before he can reach the ball. Young lifts it over the top of the keeper, but Matip gets across to block his cross before he can tee up a team-mate.
29' Robertson surges down the left flank and has room to attack. He tries to clip a cross into the middle, but it is cleared away. Robertson is clipped after the fact by Nakamba, but the referee dismisses further claims for a penalty.
28' Villa win a corner down the right flank, but the Reds manage to clear their lines from McGinn's delivery into the box.
26' Robertson surges down the left flank and cuts inside the challenge of Cash. He tries to offload in the box but goes down before he can complete a pass. He looks for a penalty, only to see his appeal turned down.
25' Martinez has to stretch to keep the ball from finding the top corner off a deflection from Konsa. Thiago had previously seen an effort charged down by the Villa defence.
O. Watkins

24' Watkins slides in hard on Fabinho, catching the Brazilian from behind. The England man goes into the book.
21' CHANCE! Young latches on to a knockdown from Watkins in the final third and takes on the early strike that he skews over the bar.

19' OVER! Oxlade-Chamberlain pounces on a loose ball after Henderson is wiped out by Nakamba. The referee plays advantage and the midfielder goes for goal from distance, only to clear the bar with his strike.
19' Liverpool are piling on the pressure in the final third, and Villa are having to battle to remain in the game.
17' Robertson is played into space down the left flank, but on this occasion he opts against a strike at goal and places a low ball into the middle that travels behind Mane.
16' SAVE! Robertson attacks a cross from Alexander-Arnold at the back post that takes a deflection off Targett. However, Martinez makes a sharp stop before gathering at the second attempt.
14' WIDE! Douglas Luiz tries to whip a low strike towards the near post, but the ball crashes into the side-netting without troubling Alisson.

8' Mane goes down under pressure from Cash in the box as he attempts to latch on to Salah's throughball, but the referee turns down his appeal for a penalty.
5' Henderson collects on the right flank and he swings a cross into the box. Konsa rises with Mane to glance the ball behind for a corner.
3' Ramsey tries to find space down the left flank, but is upended by Fabinho. Villa win a free-kick in the Liverpool half.
1' Martinez is put under pressure at the back by Oxlade-Chamberlain, but the Villa keeper takes a neat touch to break away from the forward.
1' We're under way at Anfield.
Liverpool have won six of their last seven Premier League games against Aston Villa (L1), scoring at least twice in all seven games.
Gerrard keeps matter relatively simple on his return to Anfield. He makes one change to the side that beat Leicester last week as Targett returns to the fold and replaces Buendia, meaning Young moves into an advanced role. Trezeguet returns to the bench for the first time since suffering a serious knee injury last season.
Klopp has recalled the majority of his starters back into the team following their win over Milan. Alisson returns between the posts along with Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Matip and Robertson at the back. Henderson, Fabinho and Thiago all retake their places in the middle of the park. The only three players to retain their places are Salah, Mane and Oxlade-Chamberlain.
ASTON VILLA SUBS: Morgan Sanson, Emiliano Buendia, Jed Steer, Axel Tuanzebe, Trezeguet, Danny Ings, Anwar El Ghazi, Kourtney Hause, Carney Chukwuemeka.

Gerrard returns to Anfield for the first time as a manager after leaving the club in 2015 following 17 years of excellence on the field. He has enjoyed a brilliant start to life in the dugout at Villa after leaving Rangers for the midlands last month. Villa have won three out of their four Premier League matches under his tenure, suffering only one defeat at the hands of Manchester City. Ezri Konsa was on point last week with a brace to secure a 2-1 win over Leicester City, but this afternoon will be a huge challenge for the Villans.
Liverpool will be looking to put the emotion of the occasion of Steven Gerrard's return to Anfield to one side as they bid to close the gap to Manchester City at the top of the Premier League back to one point. The Reds have won their last six matches in all competitions, but did have to leave it late against Wolves last week as Divock Origi fired home a stoppage-time strike to secure a win on the road. Jurgen Klopp took the opportunity to rest players during the week in the Champions League with qualification to the last 16 already achieved, although his team still responded with a 2-1 win over Milan. Another win will be on their agenda today.
Hello and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Liverpool and Aston Villa at Anfield.
