Manchester United suffered a shock to the system when Casemiro was sent off but fought their way to a 0-0 draw against Southampton.

Casemiro had never been shown a straight red card before coming to England but has now been sent off twice in his last five domestic games.

The Brazilian was given his marching orders after a VAR review for landing his studs on Carlos Alcaraz in the 34th minute, completely de-railing United's gameplan.

Southampton made the most of their man advantage and hit the woodwork twice although Bruno Fernandes almost found a breakthrough for United with an exquisite shot which came off the post.

GOAL rates Man Utd's players from Old Trafford.

  1. Goalkeeper & Defence

    David de Gea (7/10):

Made a top-draw save in each half from Theo Walcott, first tipping over a point-blank header then diving towards his top left-hand corner to swat away a shot that was going in.

    Aaron Wan-Bissaka (7/10):

A huge improvement on Diogo Dalot defensively and barely put a foot wrong at the back. Still has some work to do in attack though.

    Raphael Varane (7/10):

Made a super block to prevent Kamaldeen Sulemana scoring in the first half. Came close to scoring down the other end from a set-piece.

    Lisandro Martinez (8/10):

Aside from getting an early booking, this was a near-perfect performance from the Argentine. Dribbles with the confidence of an attacking midfielder and is exceptional at snuffing out danger with blocks and interceptions.

    Luke Shaw (7/10):

A fine response to his Anfield horror show.

    Midfield

    Bruno Fernandes (7/10):

Worked exceedingly hard and almost scored with a superb effort which came off the inside of the post.

    Casemiro (4/10):

His studs up challenge on Alcaraz left United with 10 men for over half of the match and they will have to make do without him for their next four domestic games.

    Jadon Sancho (6/10):

Worked very hard defensively but created little of note in attack.

  3. Attack

    Antony (6/10):

Worked much harder than at Anfield and had some promising moments in the first half before fading after Casemiro's red card.

    Wout Weghorst (4/10):

Too slow to latch on to a promising pass from Shaw and sent a free header straight into the arms of Gavin Bazunu. Was taken off immediately after Casemiro was sent off.

    Marcus Rashford (5/10):

Was not really on it today, only getting in one good shooting position and firing at Bazunu from a tight angle.

  4. Subs & Manager

    Scott Mctominay (7/10):

Did really well to steady United's midfield after effectively replacing Casemiro.

    Alejandro Garnacho (5/10):

Looked explosive but couldn't get beyond Southampton's defence on the counter.

    Facundo Pellistri (6/10):

Tried to stretch Southampton but couldn't make a tangible difference.

    Harry Maguire (n/a):

    Came on in added time.

    Fred (n/a):

    Came on in added time

    Erik ten Hag 7/10:

His selection made sense and reacted well to the shock of Casemiro getting sent off with effective changes.
