Themba Zwane enjoyed a sensational outing for Bafana Bafana as he scored twice in the 4-0 victory against Sierra Leone at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.
His performance came as he made a return to the Bafana set-up after he was previously snubbed by coach Hugo Broos. His two goals, coupled with more strikes from Mihlali Mayambela and Aubrey Modiba, gave the Cosafa nation a huge victory before their next friendly against Botswana.
Mshishi, as the Mamelodi Sundowns star is famously known, has been consequently compared with South Africa’s great - Doctor ’16 V’ Khumalo – who helped deliver the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations.
Khumalo’s legendary status within the South African football circle is further elevated by the fact he was in the team that played – and scored – in the first ever Fifa-sanctioned match at King’s Park stadium in 1992 against Cameroon.
His longevity with the national side – from 1992 to 2001 – earns him immense respect.
The comparison with Zwane, a multiple title winner at Masandawana, however, has generated a heated online exchange with some stating the debate in the first place is an insult against the South African great and the Kaizer Chiefs legend.
Doctor Khumalo turned up in the Afcon qualifiers, and World Cup qualifiers, and played the pass that sent us to our first ever World Cup! Put respect in his name! Themba Zwane is an exceptional player, but he's not 16V's match, far behind him at Bafana Bafana level. - @eemz_em.
To compare Doc with Themba Zwane is an insult. Doc played in leagues [in] Argentina and the USA - @moketetso.
Themba Zwane is and will never be anywhere Doctor Khumalo has been. It's an insult to compare any current crop of players with the class of 1992 until 2000. - @cab_delivery.
Twitter's street opinion is easily swayed by toxic accounts. I mean where do you begin comparing Themba Zwane and Doctor Khumalo, both legends in their own right if I should add. - @MoabiMo.
Only people who don't know football will compare Doctor Khumalo with Themba Zwane. - @sabelostorm.
Whoever compares Doctor Khumalo and Themba Zwane is a Sundowns and Manchester City fan (2010 fans). As a Pirates fan, all of us respect Khumalo and we don't even compare him with John Moeti, Tebogo Moloi, or Zane Moosa because we know no player comes close (1994 to now) in our generation. - @CertifiedX5.
